Confirmed with Link: Dadonov (50% retained) to Stars in exchange for Gurianov

.
Gurianov's sudden decline is a bit of a mystery. Maybe the coaching change had a lot to do with it. But there's something else that hasn't been brought up here which may go a long way to explaining his present state.

Gurianov missed a substantial number of games this season for person reasons. I don't know what the nature of the problem is but it seems to me that it could easily explain why Gurainov's head no longer seems to be in the game.

If DG is given the time and support he needs to turn the corner, the Habs might be able to get him back on track.
Yeah. His head is not into the game for sure. Personal reasons ? Yeah. Could be anything. I dunno in which extent the Ukraine-Russia war and its ramifications through the Russian society, families, etc... could have an impact on some Russian players.

I am not excited. I was just excited there was A trade and there was something to shoot shit about for a bit. The novelty has worn off.
This is another low risk high reward type of move, some will say bargainbinesque. We have become accustomed to these over the years. I don't see Gurianov moving the needle either, but I truly believe there was no interest in Dadonov whatsoever. Instead of letting him walk, the Habs take yet another gamble on a disappointing younger player. HuGo will likely qualify him because the Habs are simply in no position to attract big names this summer.

While Dadonov might be the better player, i just dont see what he brings a playoff team when intensity and physicality is upped.

Already invisible 90 percent of regular season, low intensity games. Can only imagine he goes full Casper mode in playoffs

It will be hard to keep gurianov with what his qualifying offer will be! Interesting gamble nonetheless. Type of player who could have a Marchment/Nichuskin type awakening...

We were able to keep Pitlick after not ponying up his qualifying offer.

We'll see how things play out.

Not Drouin? For me, Drou was number one. Nobody else came even close.
tough call, I would have driven Dadanov out of town if they needed though. Drouin hardly plays so he's a bit less hateable and he has some assists lol

Near 3 years ago when it mattered the most Gurianov had 17 pts in 27 playoff games...scored the back breaker goal game winner to send Dallas past Vegas to Cup final.......that to me you can't measure with charts....almost like Dale Wiese try to chart that vs him in playoffs...

...Lets see how he plays under St Louis ..let get to playoffs and see if he shines again
on a much bigger stage .

I posted my article earlier that's much more nuanced. My point wasn't to post the chart and argue that Gurianov is bad - only that in terms of immediate impact, Dadonov projects to Dallas help more than Gury. Especially since they're dead set of saddling him with crap like Faksa and Glendening.

Gury has some serious skills. But he needs to be stuck with serious linemates. I know MTS can develop players. I love that. And that's the best part of the trade for me. But can Montreal pair with speed and passing? Do that, and Stars fans will weep like they did with the last Russian first rounder who needed a "change of scenery."

At 25, Gurianov still has untapped potential. And I see MSL as a coach that will help a flawed player play a very deliberate style to minimize their weaknesses. The contract situation would have to be resolved, but if the Habs were to keep him he could be an asset, albeit a minor one.

In years past, the Habs would have all kinds of small playmakers and no finishers, so I find it interesting to see them have some good playmaking players in the lineup and in the pipeline, and the supporting cast looks to be players that can shoot the puck. Gurianov may not have the IQ but if his C is Dach, etc it shouldn't matter. That's what playmakers do, they make others better. So even if he's not an elite finisher, it's a step in the right direction.

As you build the team, you often have to gradually upgrade as players become available. I think too many fans think of a rebuild as a on/off switch. Gurianov isn't the ideal goal scoring winger with size, but he's definitely an upgrade and he could potentially fall back into being a luxury 4th liner for us by the time we start contending. Lots of players pivot roles to stay in the league and Gurianov has the raw athletic skills to do that. Just a matter of MSL getting through to him to commit to a role.

Nice to have another lefty as well on the wings. My expectations are low but I'm happy to see dadonov get moved

Just saw the update...

Makes more sense, no retention would've been an absolute homerun, and curious on Dallas' part.

With retention, it's only 400k pro rated cap add for us, so still a great move for us from an asset management & risk/reward roi, imo

Definitely worth it even though Habs took on some extra cap for it. They got rid of Dadonov while bringing in a guy who is 8 years younger and bigger. A guy who has struggled this year, sure, but still a very worthy gamble for the Habs.

Consider this, as much as Habs fans hate Dadonov, statistically, he's been better than Gurianov.

Can't compare the two that way... Dadonov avg 2+ min a game more time, was spoon fed pp time & every opportunity to play with Habs best C options on a lottery team desperate for anyone to contribute in top 6 capacity.

Gurianov has been used as a depth fwd on a cup contender.

Gurianov is a player that falls into that category where you simply can't keep everyone coupled with the fact that some other prospects developed faster and passed him on the depth chart.
One of those players who simply might need a change of scenery and a legitimate chance.

Just look at his TOI. Not much of a mystery.

So... when do we get the first rounder that came with the Monahab trade? In 2024?
You need to read the Dead Sea Scrolls just to start to figure it out.

Just look at his TOI. Not much of a mystery.
I was just about to post that. He was playing 10 mins per game. Compare to the type of ice time plus playing on better lines and in better situations he’s likely to get under Marty and this could get interesting.
