I like that even though he's able to take the puck and go because of how gifted his legs are he's still always a pass first guy

He was outstanding. Call it recency bias or whatever but he was toying with some quality prospects out there.

Worth the gamble IMO. Anywhere in the top 5-10 but could go as high as top 2 or 3. The RBC Cup is no joke and he made it look easy.

he's too good for junior A. It was like Jost and Fabbro a couple years ago as 17 year olds in Penticton in their draft years, they ran the league at that young of an age. Heck they were 2 of the better players at 16 years old too....Makar needs to be at a higher level and thank god hes going up a league next year.... junior A wasnt a challenge for him

Ill be curious who will end up drafting him and how high he will actually go.

What other prospects were in the tourny?

Generally speaking, recently bias is a reasonable stance in scouting - and not really a 'bias' at all. After all, we are looking at how 17-18 year old players are progressing in order to gauge future potential, make projections, so the more recent the stellar play, the better.

Late season usually also means playoffs, international tournaments etc., tougher opponents, so good play there does weigh more than October league games in Sudbury.

You'd average out a full year's performance only if you were giving some kind of retrospective grade (think high school achievement tests vs. university entrance exams as a comparison).

I looked up the last 3 opponents the Brooks Bandits played. They lost in the finals to the Coubour cougars.

the last 3 opponents consists of 0 drafted NHL prospects.

His team was overwhelmed. outshot 2-1 but still 2 points.

Wether the other opponents have players that is entering the draft or potentially get drafted that part is unknown.

Actually it was Brooks who overwhelmed Cobourg. I was at the game and Cobourg had no business winning the game but somehow they found a way. Makar was very good but somehow left me wanting more

Thank you for correcting.

So Cory Pronman ranked Makar 19th, wow.

Anybody know where he ranked Liljegren, Valimaki and Heiskanen?

He can't be serious? Pretty sure that Heiskanen, Liljegren and Makar all go top 8 and i can see Valimaki at #13 to Winnipeg. I see Dallas taking Heiskanen with their #3 pick Liljegren to Arizona for their #7 pick an Makar to Buffalo for their #8 pick.

His rankings are not a mock draft.... He also gives quite a few good reasons why he ranks him where he does.

He is gonna be a star, didnt take long to figure it out he was unbelievable in that game last night. Whoever thinks dominating in a game like that is easy is saddly mistaken. His escapability with the puck and precision with it is incredible. The RBC final has teams that all rival Major junior teams and in most cases are probably better than half the major jr teams in Canada.

Cant see him getting by Vancouver.

That can't be right because Phoenix assigned Turris to the minors in his 19 year old season.

Makar could play in the AHL next year.
As someone mentioned I believe it was a rehab stint of some sort.
EDIT: One of the mods in the Jost thread suggested Turris was allowed to be sent to the AHL as he had already played 50 NHL games.
There's no mystery at all. That rule only applies to kids drafted out of the CHL.
It's been brought up in the Jost thread as well as the Oilers forum back when Jujhar Khaira went through this situation.

There was a quote from one of the WHL GM's stating what the rule was. But way too lazy to find that :dunno:

I mean as we all know people in the game who should know the rules have been wrong before but I would think the CHL GM's know this rule better than anyone.

Attended the game yesterday. Here is my quick scouting report:

Very smooth skater who can escape pressure with his quick acceleration. Great edgework also allows him to separate himself from attacking players. Always seems to make a tape to tape pass whether it be 5 feet away or 30 feet away. Also possesses some of the best stop and start speed I have seen. Extremely shifty player who can easily beat people with his moves.

At times I wish he was more selfish. If he wanted to, he could rush the puck from end to end without much issue. Instead, he seems to be a pass first player even though he has the talent to drive the play. I think Brooks wins if he decides to be more selfish.

At times he would also make the wrong play. Maybe shoot at the wrong time or shoot too early.

It is also tough to gauge as it is only Junior A, but he did seem to toy with his opponents at times. Cobourg also has some very good talent including guys like Maguire and Bricknell who played the majority of their career in the OHL.

Controls the game on the defensive side as well just because when he gets the puck he always can get out of trouble. Will always be an issue with one on one battles but you aren't drafting a player like this to be a defensive stud. Then again, the best defense is a good offense.

Brooks dominated the play mainly due to Makar. In the first period Cobourg only had a few minutes of decent possession. It was when Makar was in the box.

I look forward to see how he adapts to the next level as he is clearly way too good for Junior A.

You can't teach these tools though. I would be taking him in the top ten
