Fair enough. I'd contest it's not just dipsy-doodling that Hughes is better at, but you are right that time will tell. In the end, I won't exactly be upset if Cale can become a 60-65pt two-way stud & Hughes is putting up 70-75pts+ but needs a much more specific type (and caliber) of partner to babysit him.
Quinn's dipsy doodling works well in College, but I don't think it will translate as well in the NHL. I am pretty sure Cale's power skating will make him much more effective than Quinn will be. IMO Quinn will get plenty of 2nd/secondary assists where as Cale will get more 1st/primary assists and more goals.

Time will tell, but I would much rather have Cale than Quinn.

Quinn's a year younger. Makar wasn't nearly as good a year ago. Can't compare like that.

I have been more impressed with Hughes. Makar's highlight plays are getting quite overrated IMO.

I agree, I think Hughes is closing in on bust territory. Makar however might just be the second coming of Orr.

Being impressed with each players highlights is personal opinion. As for overrated, I am getting tired of the argument about the 1 year age difference. I have been watching hockey my whole life and I can't recall many players being able to dipsy doodle around the ice for very long like Quinn does. His skill set is not at the same level as Patrick Kane and dmen rarely get a chance to dipsy doodle like this as their is a high risk of a turnover, which matters less if you are a forward. Off the top of my head, the only current successful dman who plays like this is Letang and he has a much better shot and a ton of experience.

Just my opinion but I see Makar being able to step right in and be effective at both ends of the ice and Hughes taking several years before he can really be trusted other than on the powerplay. I have only watched highlights of Hughes, but I also do not see any physicality to his game whereas Makar looks like a beast for his size.

LOL! Incredible how you deciphered what I wrote in my post to mean that Hughes was in bust territory.

People are far too sensitive on this board. Especially Vancouver fans. I live in Vancouver so I know what I am talking about.

Again my point was about how loaded calling Hughes' advantages mere "flash" or "dipsy doodling" was, not that I preferred him due to his advantages. I prefer Makar, especially for my Avs, but Hughes has his advantages in slipperiness & creativity/flare with the puck...and those advantages don't disappear at the NHL level; given that we are seeing more & more smurfs thriving in the NHL due to their skating, skill & minds, with each season that passes.

Blueline MacKinnon.

That's what he looks like now. Keep in mind that college players tend to be kind of smallish. Cale is bigger than a lot of them, that won't happen in the NHL. He should still be stronger than most NHLers though.

It's about the combination of explosiveness & power in his stride, and how that + his skill-level allow him to dominate the action on the ice. He may be a little smaller, at a position that is generally bigger, but the way Cale looks-on/moves-around the ice is so reminiscent of MacKinnon...only from the blueline.

MacK doesn't really knock skulls much either, but he can power through a lot of things that other skaters can't & he can just explode in those first few strides to create separation or close a gap, and that is what we're getting at when we call him Blueline-MacKinnon. And that part of his skillset should absolutely translate.

Yes I like the comparison in terms of explosiveness.

Makar’s highlights have little to do with determining how good he is. I bet you couldn’t give me a decent report on how he plays the game if you had all the time in the world.

What lol?
