Calling Makar one dimensional is insane. Who knows what he actually becomes, or how he develops, and right now the hype train is insanely high given what he's doing so I can understand people wanting to temper expectations or maybe not agreeing. That's all fair.

His defense has been huge this season in college. Even his physical game has grown. He's laid some absolute monster hits. He's been elite defensively in college this year. Do I think that completely translates to the NHL? Probably not. I think he'll be above average, and good enough to be a #1 defender combined with his offense.

I just don't get how you can watch him this season and not be blown away by his all around game. That's the biggest improvement, and the thing that has everyone hopeful. His shot, stickhandling, skating, and offensive tools everybody knew about. It's what got him drafted 4th. His development as an all-around defender this season is what has him as the best prospect not in the NHL according to a ton of people right now.

It took people like 7 years to stop calling EK a one dimensional offensive dman. Just how people are

I reviewed data from a few years ago about Makar from Scout Metrics that shows his type of play compared to players in his draft class.:

Scout Metrics: The following represents the top five players in the 2017 draft class in two different categories (all numbers are from even-strength scenarios over an 11-game sample):

Net Shot Attempts

Cale Makar, D, Brooks (AJHL): 198
Nick Suzuki, C, Owen Sound (OHL): 107
Josh Norris, C, U.S. NTDP (USHL): 96
Mason Shaw, C, Medicine Hat (WHL): 95
Jonah Gadjovich, LW, Owen Sound (OHL): 94

Controlled Zone Exits
Cale Makar, D, Brooks (AJHL): 106
Conor Timmins, D, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL): 72
Ian Mitchell, D, Spruce Grove (AJHL): 58
Josh Brook, D, Moose Jaw (WHL): 58
Juuso Valimaki, D, Tri-City (WHL): 58

Thats insane that he took that many shots and carried puck with so many zone exits. He is the definition of offensive defenseman.
Barrie is an offensive defenseman. He's really only capable of offense and needs to be sheltered to an extent. Makar wont need to be. Hes competent at both ends. Just because a defenseman jumps into the offense doesn't make him an Ofd. He's a capable 2-way guy who doesn't need sheltering. Him not playing PK has alot more to do with the 27mins a night he's clocking. He also is capable of matching top lines.

Talent Analysis

Karlsson is a very offensive minded defenseman. He is blessed with excellent hockey sense, confidence and coolness. Everything looks so easy and natural when Karlsson has the puck under control in the offensive zone. He is a true power specialist that usually gets the puck on net and also delivers very good passes. Furthermore, he is mobile and a capable skater with good agility and technical skills.

The knock on Karlsson is his defensive game and size. While he is very cool and confident in the offensive zone, he sometimes chooses difficult solutions in the defensive end. He should play easier and be closer on his opponent. While he Karlsson likely will not be much taller, he should definitely add more strength and muscles. The fact that Karlsson likes to get involved physically and can deliver rather good hits is a big plus. With added strength, his physical play would be much more effective.

What puts Kaprizov over Gusev at this point?

Gusev is 26. Kaprizov is 21. Kaprizov has a far more impressive resume at the same age.

Shestyorkin missing from the above top prospects list.

Makar is #1.

Has he committed to signing with the Avs yet? The part I didn't like about the pick was if he decides he could have played out his college years and then chosen whatever team he wanted as a UFA.

I googled but just found generic fluff pieces, was wondering if there was something more concrete or if this might be another example of guys not signing with their teams and picking where they want to go.

A top-flight prospect like Makar isn’t going to chop two years off his career (and therefore lose out on $16-20M) to be able to choose what team he goes to, even if he hated Colorado and the Avs were a horrible team.

He will play in the NHL next year, and probably a bit this season.

i absolutely hope he does not play this season making him expendable to the expansion draft for a few games is a BIG no

NHL holds his rights for 4 years since he is a college player so he would have to come back to UMASS his junior season and then come back again for his senior season then would become a FA (Vesey did that - but that was Harvard not UMASS). I highly, highly doubt Makar comes back as a junior - he has proven he is ready for next level and doesnt have much more to accomplish in the NCAA level. He will turn pro right after Umass season is over IMO.

Isn't he just racking up points on an absurdly lethal PP. He may be a great PP QB player but I don't think he controls the game in the same way Makar does.

Actually you probably have them backwards. Fox plays a ton and is used on PK and logs a ton of ice time in all situations. Makar is used on PP but not PK.

Of the 40 points Fox has scored this season, 21 of them have come on the powerplay. Of the 40 points Makar has scored this season, only 12 of them have come on the powerplay.
Not surprising at all - Fox is used a lot on PP and also on PK and just about every other minute when he isnt gassed. Makar is used much more precisely by Umass. Makar I think has a way higher ceiling.

You have some TOI stats you can share to back up these claims?
