Watched a piece NESN did on him today (sorry don't have the link). Best part was the UMass coach trying to say how they though it was in Caleb's best developmental interest to have a 2 year plan in college hockey, kinda like MacAvoy with BU. Keep on dreaming coach...

Que? This second season has been huge for Cale's development...

Top 50 NHL prospects: Ranking the best young players in hockey

Makar might be the best prospect in the world, including non-drafted players.

If the Ottawa pick ends up 1st overall Colorado will have the best forward prospect and best defense prospect on the planet.

I don't see it
To be the best prospect, he'd have to be unanimous by everyone who ranks prospects, which he isn't.

Something along the lines of Marner after his performance.

I've seen him ranked 1, 9, 5

He's not a more valued prospect than Hughes, Kakko or Lafreniere.
Arguably the only potential #1D prospect in the world. This is a matter of opinion and debatable. 25+ min ~ppg dman would be more valuable imo

C's a more important role than D, also... It's very early to be calling Makar a PPG dman, I'd wait for him to actually play. He got drafted 2 seasons ago and still isn't in NHL.

Forward prospects tend to be valued higher because they tend to have more certainty in projection. Especially centers. I don't think Makar would be the top prospect in Hockey among many sources, and in most cases, he's likely to be 4th. Just look at most drafts when the top pick is close, the center or even forward goes first. Just look at MacKinnon vs Jones, who also got passed by Barkov and Drouin.

I agree with you I'm high on Makar but people need to chill a bit because of his age. He's had time to develop already.

it's his ceiling imo and requires further development yes

I dont think hes talking about future projections, simply right now. And IMO theres a pretty solid argument that hes the best prospect in the world. In a year from now I'd suspect Hughes would be a better quality prospect, but talking right now Makar is probably the best player in the world not in the NHL.

That's generally not how the term prospect is used. Best player not in the NHL is probably Gusev.
