Risk vs. reward: Coyotes deal financially favors the team, but is far safer for Tempe

Paywalled...but just listing the Pros and Cons headings:

Pro: Tempe can't lose existing cash
Con: Tempe could be overcontributing new taxes by $64M

Pro: Tempe gets a risky piece of land off its books
Con: Tempe could be selling the land for less than it's worth

Pro: Tempe's project has safeguards, won't turn out like Glendale's
Con: Coyotes could use a loophole, turn profit with public dollars

Anyone wants the article let me know and I'll DM it.

It‘s a mail-in election. Can’t do exit polls.
As I understand it, yesterday was the final day to mail in your ballot, but in person voting is still available at designated places. In theory could exit polls still be done based on that limited subset of the vote?

I would think that if i am for this plan, i would want those polls done, so -at least internally so i know where to try to look for votes. My guess is that more people in tempe favor this plan than oppose, but that the passion is a lot higher for those on the no side. Also anecdotally, it seems that there is a partisan split wiht republican generally in favor and democrats generally opposed for reasons i do not get but i could be off base here. Democrats should be in favor of the environmental cleanup of the land.

An exit poll under those circumstances wouldn't be a good indicator.

Besides. We'll know what the early mail in results are for everything received up to the last day probably within an hour of the official deadline to submit ballots when Maricopa County releases them.

In person will only be the final day. All eligible voters were sent a mail-in ballot, so the % of people actually doing in person voting on a replacement ballot should be quite small and may not be an adequate sample of the overall populace.

Even though yesterday was the cutoff to mail in a ballot, voters can still drop off those ballots at an authorized location until 7pm on election day.

Election results will probably be announced very shortly after the 7pm deadline.

Edit: they are actually allowing in-person voting up until the 16th. But this is being done at only one location. even more likely imo that it would not be a representative sample of the voting population.

Noted and Thanks. I know this is pie in the sky thinking, but it is possible with what is happening in calgary, ottawa and florida's run this year that if this vote passes, that by the end of this year, all NHL franchises will truly have stability.

(Tempe councilman Randy) Keating was critical of the Tempe Wins campaign in its early days, but he has seen the campaign ramp up its efforts with a broad approach that includes email blitzes, phone calls, social media and mainstream media campaigns, neighborhood meetings hosted by supporters, and door-to-door canvassing that included Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo, GM Bill Armstrong and numerous other Coyotes staff members.

“I think it shows their commitment and how much they want to be ingrained in this community,” Tempe Wins spokesperson Sophie O’Keefe-Zelman said. “It says a lot about the organization when you have Alex Meruelo knocking on doors, talking to every-day Tempeans and answering their questions.

Y’all still here?
You do know there’s no way this doesn’t pass, don’t you?
Silly, silly people.

I spent two years watching the live stream construction cam on the Islanders arena. I watched it go from a dirt to a brand new arena.

But after everything that I'd been through as an Islanders fan, I did not feel comfortable that we ACTUALLY HAD a new arena until the puck dropped for the SECOND PERIOD of the first game in it.

People were crying when they stood in UBS Arena the first night. I would not be surprised if there's the same thing for Coyotes fans when they finally have security and stability for the first time in two decades if this thing happens.

Wait a second. Are you trying to imply that once this passes it's a guarantee things will move forward to its conclusion? Are you new here?
Yeah, this will be a magical feeling
I agree it will be quite magical. And since magic doesn't actually exist.....
