Adam Larsson is mistake prone and struggles to move the puck, but is really effective at breaking up the cycle, and can actually defend when the opposition has set up in the zone. This is a huge weak spot for our team. Like pretty much all of our D struggle in this area. Perhaps playing with a puck-mover like OEL would benefit both players. It would have been nice to have a big blueliner who was tougher to play against, as we were being run right over in our own zone against Vegas. He's faaaaar from a perfect player. But he does the one thing well. And it's a thing we need pretty badly.
I agree with
@hbk that Tippett would be unlikely to let Larsson go at this point, given the situation with their blueline. However, Holland can't ignore the goaltending forever. The pitchforks and torches are coming for both Holland and Tippett. Oilers nation is absolutely fired up right now. Could Holland be tempted by Raanta? Maybe. Could Tippett be pacified with Demers? With the declining ice-time Larsson is getting, maybe he could. Demers has a reputation as a "Solid Vet" so that should appeal to DT.
At this point I'm pretty sick of Raanta and Demers anyway. Unfortunately, they represent over 8mil in combined aav. We'd have to retain the maximum on BOTH players to get them to fit under Edmonton's cap if Larsson is the only roster player coming back. Normally, I'd say that's an automatic no-go from ownership. But with bonuses and retention, they're only due a little over 4mil in actual cash, combined). With the season already 10% over, that means we'd be retaining a hair less than two million in real dollars.
The nice thing is, Edmonton would definitely owe us a pretty nice asset if we're retaining on Raanta and Demers and they're offering only a full-price Larsson. Maybe something like Samorukov?
