If you play around with the expansion tool on CapFriendly, the piece we will likely lose is one of:

Larsson
Pitlick
Fischer
Capo
Oesterle
Hill

That’s with one protection slot remaining at both forward and D. I’d probably just hope they take Pitlick.
Lol. I look at that list and think “Man, Pitlick is the only one I’d prefer not to lose.”. I’d also hate to lose Larsson but the others I couldn’t care any less if we did or not.

I will look this up in a little bit unless someone beats me but we have to be one of the teams that will have the most cap, with the least amount of true assets being exposed going into the expansion draft. I was excited to see how Chayka would navigate it but have more faith in BA doing so. RNH would be one of those pieces I hope we at least take a look at. Revamping the blueline has to be the top priority though.
IF Capo and Soderstrom can stick it would make all the difference in the world.

I'd like to acquire a defenseman to protect from a team that will have to expose one. Carolina or Chicago, for example.

I protected:

Keller
Schmaltz
Dvorak
Kessel (NMC)
Crouse
Garland

OEL
Chychrun

Kuemper

So then add Capobianco and one of Fischer/Larsson.
I think one or two of these players may be traded by then.

They'll look at the contracts, which UFAs are not expiring in the following year. That takes out Larsson and Pitlick

Adam Larsson only played 14 minutes tonight, the least of any Edmonton D. And 8 minutes less than Barrie!
He's been struggling according to Oilers fans. I'd take a gamble on him, given he's a pending UFA anyhow. He's a very large, very powerfully built defenseman, who's got a lot of flaws, but at the very least, generally hits a lot and blocks a lot of shots. Since the Oilers acquired him, there are only two NHL defensemen with more hits, and only seven with more blocked shots. Obviously, those events only occur when your team doesn't have possession, so that's not always a great sign. But still, if we're looking for a big guy who can clog things up and can be a pain to play against, he might fit the bill.

He's not playing well now, but he's shown he's capable of playing at a high-level. Perhaps a change of scenery would do the trick.

Larsson is an upcoming UFA as well so if he doesn't get a bump in usefulness from a trade or doesn't take to the system we are running here then we can just let him walk. Also means we don't need to worry about protecting him. I think it's a win-win especially with OEL being out. Of course the 2 week quarantine means he probably can't play until OEL is ready but I like the gamble and how it opens up an opportunity to move one of Demers or Goligoski.

Another thing I was thinking about, with Garland really taking the next step how expendable has Keller become? I feel like we have another "nifty" winger in Maccelli coming up. His contract may hurt his value and he is just a winger but a team lacking in firepower may be interested. I have no problem keeping him but Garland's play these past six games makes me feel more comfortable with our winger depth than the end of last year.

Adam Larsson is mistake prone and struggles to move the puck, but is really effective at breaking up the cycle, and can actually defend when the opposition has set up in the zone. This is a huge weak spot for our team. Like pretty much all of our D struggle in this area. Perhaps playing with a puck-mover like OEL would benefit both players. It would have been nice to have a big blueliner who was tougher to play against, as we were being run right over in our own zone against Vegas. He's faaaaar from a perfect player. But he does the one thing well. And it's a thing we need pretty badly.

I agree with @hbk that Tippett would be unlikely to let Larsson go at this point, given the situation with their blueline. However, Holland can't ignore the goaltending forever. The pitchforks and torches are coming for both Holland and Tippett. Oilers nation is absolutely fired up right now. Could Holland be tempted by Raanta? Maybe. Could Tippett be pacified with Demers? With the declining ice-time Larsson is getting, maybe he could. Demers has a reputation as a "Solid Vet" so that should appeal to DT.

At this point I'm pretty sick of Raanta and Demers anyway. Unfortunately, they represent over 8mil in combined aav. We'd have to retain the maximum on BOTH players to get them to fit under Edmonton's cap if Larsson is the only roster player coming back. Normally, I'd say that's an automatic no-go from ownership. But with bonuses and retention, they're only due a little over 4mil in actual cash, combined). With the season already 10% over, that means we'd be retaining a hair less than two million in real dollars.

The nice thing is, Edmonton would definitely owe us a pretty nice asset if we're retaining on Raanta and Demers and they're offering only a full-price Larsson. Maybe something like Samorukov?

Keep Keller. We need him now and even more so when Kessel is gone.

Tocchet says OEL is "walking around well" .... a little insight into what his injury actually is.

Hey everyone, Canucks poster coming in peace. Wondering what the outlook is for Adin Hill, he's seemed up and down the last year or two. Obviously the #1 job is taken, but is there any future for him past being a backup?

He and Prosvetov will be fighting for the #1 job eventually. Hill has been the backup lately because Raanta gets hurt putting on his pads at this point in his career. He won't get a chance to shine until Raanta is traded or walks.

5v5 last year he had the highest save % above expected in the league for guys that played at least ten games. He doesn't get any respect around here but I think he'll be a good pro and someone Seattle will look at.

Coyotes fans on this forum and on Twitter seem to be really hard on Hill. I don't get it. I think he's done well for his age and has some upside. I can't project a goalie's future to save my life, though. Everything just seems so damn random at that position. Generally, though, I've been satisfied in his performance for us so far.

Save Percentages:
18-19 = .901
19-20 = .918 - top 20 in the NHL

The second they can ship Raanta out they should and give Hill those starts.
