“Elite athleticism”.

If only Detroit could have found a goalie that draft that didn’t have positioning problems or trouble tracking the puck…but it’s not like one was available to Detroit at that pick, right…?
Are you talking about the guy with a sub 900 sv% in the AHL?

Also you guys that have been saying SHL > AHL I’d like to hear why guys like Wallstedt and Johnansson are having hard time over here? You’d think coming to a lesser league they would be doing better.

Kinda weird.

Big factor is the rink size difference, that will need longer adjustment period between SHL and AHL. Sweden has most 30m wide rinks, and the difference to NA is biggest.

Finland has multiple hybrid sized (28M compromise) rinks, so that's not so big deal, when going from 28m --> 26m NA rinks or to --> European big 30m rinks. You should handle both quite well, when you practise mostly and play home games at 28m rink.

What's very interesting, is how KHL has many NHL sized 26m rinks, and NO WONDER, it's the goalie factory in latest years... Vasilevskiy, Varlamov, Sorokin, Shesterkin, Samsonov, Bobrovsky, Georgiev, Tarasov, Kochetkov....

There are 7-8 potential Russian starters at NHL. I don't think there's nothing special at their development, except those rink sizes (which will prepare you better to NA) and young potential goalies having strong competition level against skilled men at KHL level.

Cossa's professional career is objectively off to a bad start. I fully expected his development to be a journey so at this point we're probably best to forget about him and let him do his thing. Maybe in 2 -3 year we will have a surprise.

Goalies don't make it until they are 25+ yo. He has a ton of time so don't stress about poor play right now. He just turned 20 and is playing pro hockey for the first time. Even if he is playing ECHL, that's a huge jump from junior. Expect tough times.

Still better than the guy trending towards a sub 0.800 save percentage. :sarcasm:
Also, if you look at goalie stats in the A this year their numbers are way down from the last few seasons.

As for Johansson it’s usage and ice time. He’s a slick puck rusher asked to play like Patrick Nemeth. I’m sure our kids would look better if they had a real coach.

Ehhhh I think if he wasn’t a 15th overall pick we’d be writing a goalie off with a sub .900
If he was a later round pick he'd probably still be in juniors, and we would be a lot more patient.

For the record I wanted Wallstedt, but writing off any 20 year old goalie is ridiculous. Goalies are notoriously difficult to project and rarely have linear progressions.

No one’s writing him off as far as I can tell.

There’s just not a single positive you can come up with about his season so far, which is a big concern when his 19 yo season was already much worse than his 18yo season.

He’s been plain brutal

He's got 3 years of waiver exemption left after this season. Tons of time. As bad as his numbers have been this season, I'm not worried yet. Disappointed, but not worried. Time is on his side.

But what if his time suffering in Detroit’s system gives him the confidence of Tim Cheveldae?

You know how much confidence Chevy must have had to keep going out there every day regardless of how well he played? We can only hope Cossa becomes such self-assured.

What was Cheveldae going to say? “Sorry coach. Nerves are shot! Play Riendeau!”
The guy looked like he was going to cry after every goal in 1993.

Think I would send him to Finland to develop as a Goaltender.

Kouvola? Mr. Lehtonen, our National team goalie coach.
"Bubble gum" Lehtonen doesn't work for GoGo anymore. National team goalie coach and Finnish Ice Hockey Association's goalie development director is his current official title, and i believe he is also some sort of goalie consultant for the U20 national team.

Solution? Hire a finnish coach to GR. My idea was to hire Marko Torenius but Canucks hired him and Hershey hired Juha Lehtola.

Which is better than any GR goalie
Maybe if he had the same team in front of him his numbers would be worse as well. Or maybe even better. Kind of a pointless comparison though.

Edit:
Like this guy on Carolina, I'd imagine if he was our goalie we'd be worse off than with Husso, but this guy has the 2nd lowest gaa in the league

There's no something about Russian goaltenders, somehow so many of them very good.

I remember reading an assumption on reddit that isn't scientific but fun to think about in regards to Russian prospects.

Good offensive prospects + bad defensive prospects = good goalie prospects
