The plan for next year is Grand Rapids, where Olkinuora and Brattstrom's contract are up, or is it up in the NHL to backup Husso?

For reference, Husso played 1 year split between the AHL and ECHL, then played 3 years in the AHL before playing with St Louis. To be fair, he had some pretty good goalies in Allen and Binnington to leapfrog, whereas in Detroit, it won't be as hard as it was for Husso.
I have to believe the plan for Cossa next year is open-ended at the moment. Ideally, he performs and develops well enough this season that Yzerman is comfortable putting him in GR full-time, in a role where he gets enough games to continue to develop at the appropriate pace. If he doesn't show he's ready for that, well, be prepared for part 2 of this thread with a helluva lot more hand-wringing and defeatist attitude.

I don't think there's much of chance we see him in Detroit next year though.

AHL or ECHL, he isnt close to be ready for the big league.

That's what I hope / anticipate too. It's a reality that some might not be in agreeance with, but a reality nonetheless.

Yeah, he will be AHL guaranteed next year. Only way he sees the NHL is if both our NHL goalies go down.

Would like to see him get some AHL games in. I'm skeptical about the team he's been playing behind in Toledo, not that the Griffins are exactly killing it.

AHL it is, in addition to Husso. Jimmy Howard and Ben Bishop also played 4 years in the minors before they got promoted. Jakob Markström played 5 years, Holtby 3,5 years and Pekka Rinne 3 years, no way Red Wings are going to rush Cossa. Specially now when we got Husso, i could see the route for Cossa being next 2-3 years in AHL and then 1-2 years as a backup in NHL.

As for the goalie situation in GR for next year, i think Yzerman signs a new goalie in the summer. I don't think that Hellberg stays in NA, if he doesn't get a spot in the NHL. Olkinuora and Brättström returns to Europe for sure and Lethemon is a ECHL goalie.

Pheonix Copley at eliteprospects.com
Played 4 years in Hershey when Alex Westlund was goalie coach over there, he spend total 5 years Caps organization. Interesting connection, i could see him being one of the targets in summer. 37 NHL games under his belt, not much but enough for a 3rd goalie role. Played 2 years for Michigan Tech as well.

Keith Kinkaid at eliteprospects.com
Aaron Dell at eliteprospects.com
Couple more experienced options.

Bednar looks like a bust, not worth to sign. But Gyrlander's numbers has looked good this year, maybe they sign him in the summer as well.

Goalie depth chart for next year:
Husso
"Korpisalo/Stolarz/Hellberg"
--------------------------
"Copley/Kinkaid/Dell"
Cossa
--------------------------
Lethemon
Gyrlander

I like the Gylander move in the ECHL. He's had wonderful numbers in the NCAA, he sits at .921SV% and 2.41 GAA this year.

It's still EXACTLY what Yzerman will want.

Play behind a bad defence, so It's YOU who should stand on your head.

That's the situation where he did want to put him.

Where does easy WHL wins with easy workload develop him? It's staying in the comfort zone. Guaranteed stagnant development. It's already seen in many places with many players.

Uncomfort zone will push you being better, and that's how development will happen.

Easy work outs and wins. You clearly never met Ian Gallagher.

Chicago was basically on a perpetual pp that 1st period. But regardless, I'm still seeing more of the same, Cossa cannot track the puck at these higher levels. It just seems to go right through him, which at his size should be much more difficult.....

As others have said goalies take time…

But, this is nothing but bad signs so far this year. Like, really really bad signs.

He has seemingly regressed tremendously since being drafted.

“Elite athleticism”.

If only Detroit could have found a goalie that draft that didn’t have positioning problems or trouble tracking the puck…but it’s not like one was available to Detroit at that pick, right…?

Lol, I'm not going to beat that dead horse....but I am legit concerned. I want Cossa to do well because we invested so much to get him, but how do you fix him not being able to react to the movement of the puck?

A lot of players look awful when stepping from juniors to pro. His issues could be unfixable, but it's way too soon to say. Right now he is what most of us thought he was; a guy who is a little too good to be in juniors but isn't really ready for a full time pro gig.

It is almost like he was carried in Edmonton by a stacked team and gaining inflated stats. Without that, he has been abysmal. Very worrying.

We spent a 1st and change on Cossa.

We spent a 3rd on Husso.

Goalies are completely f***ing random. Trade for them. Don't draft them. Or at least not high in the draft. The lowest drafted goalie the Wings have picked in 10 years will likely end up the best of them (Gylander).

Almost everyone thought he was at kk east ECHL ready and I’m not sure anyone would have predicted he would be sitting at sub .800sv% when in the AHL.

There’s absolutely no denying he’s worse than expected this season in every single aspect

The ECHL performance hasn't been that bad.
