I absolutely hated that movie as well.

Have you seen the German series Dark on Netflix? That might be up your alley
Dark was a great watch. Smart and well told. Good performances and nice use of some tried and true science fiction tropes. I watched the follow up show by the same producers and am waiting for the new season.

For anime fans. Mob Psycho 100 is great.
It's so nice to watch a well-drawn cartoon, at the same time with good irony, without kinks and with good morals, with good eternal meanings. A wonderful cartoon where Japanese animation shows itself, but it does not become wildness, which is impossible for an adult to perceive.

Im waiting for new Miyazaki movie.

Most anime ultimately has a great story and message. But I think the goofiness of some series does have a charm. Like Gintama for instance. Sometimes it goes overboard and just becomes terrible though. Akame ga Kill was like that. What a terrible excuse for a show. 100% fan service, no substance.

A lot of anime series is a cheap stuff for teenagers about idealistic ideals. About proving truthful truth and asserting your ego. But its not a problem of anime only, it turned out that people are reluctant to grow up and are in no hurry to think critically and consistently. And all sorts of ideological material that gives simple answers is quite suitable for them. Netflix says hello.

Otherwise, the idea of dehumanization could not be explained in any way, which was wild a hundred years ago, but the idea still exists and is being broadcast with success. Im not telling its an anime fault, but there were a lot of anime series with an idealistic message that does not allow the alternative truth. I am glad that the Japanese have done a lot of reverse content. And when Im watching it, I fееl happy.
Im talking about it in psyhological and philosophical context, but I believe a lot of adult men(who never watched any anime movies\tv series) from this board will just cringe if we will ask them to watch some teenage anime series. And they will cry after watching Miyadzyaki movies like p***yes. Of course if they have a taste and soul.

And a lot of modern anime stuff made without graphic taste. It§s very sad because Japan have great graphic culture overall and great animation culture specifically.

My older two kids have watched some anime and have their favorites but I can’t recall What they might be right now. The youngest hasn’t gotten into it. My middle son turned me onto a Star Wars series of anime shorts that were very good but I forget the name of the anthology. I like the idea that animation can tell a sophisticated story which hasn’t typically been the case for western animation.

Some European animation can tell sophisticated stories. And dome Pixar movies are good in it.

Oh! I remembered another animation for you.
The House (2022) ⭐ 6.8 | Animation, Comedy, Drama
Its an animation movie with three short stories. And second part is... very atmospheric. I don't wanna spoil anything.

Star Wars: Visions

I enjoyed them too, even though I'm not a big anime fan.

Apparently the reviews weren't good but I enjoyed The Last Voyage of the Demeter, it's nothing super original or anything of the sort but it's visually great to look at and has a really good score. Liam Cunningham was good. The tone and atmosphere of the movie was dark and consistent throughout.

If you have one of the theater subscription options or have a discount day it's worth seeing otherwise just wait to watch it at home.

Late to the Strange New Worlds party but I'm now into season 2 and I think it's the best Trek I've watched in years. Although I'm more of a casual Trek fan. I tried Discovery and Picard but neither really hooked me. It might just be because of how much I like Anson Mount after watching Hell on Wheels multiple times.

I enjoy a lot of anime, by no means would I call myself super knowledgeable but gun to my head, Ghibli aside, I think I can only recommend a handful of things to people who have a neutral or negative opinion on it. I think the affectations of even stuff like Deathnote, Monster, Paranoia Agent or Attack on Titan can be pretty off putting. My main reason for watching aside from beautiful visuals is that the scenarios and thought experiments can be fascinating. I’ll admit stuff like Demon Slayer seems a little silly and I don’t get it. Went to a convention with my girlfriend, who tends to like cuter stuff, and was surprised by how popular it is.

Ghost in the Shell (original), most of Cowboy Bebop, Perfect Blue, Angel’s Egg, Memories and a few others I can recommend without reservation. No surprise, most of them are older. And I agree Japan has a rich history of great, more adult oriented stories and more sophisticated animation and it’s harder and harder to find that stuff. Maybe the larger cultural trend towards immaturity is a global thing, in response to all the doom and gloom elsewhere. But I’m glad to see super hero movies dying out in the US - Barbie and Opppenheimer doing well hopefully green lights different kinds of stories.

I think the issue with superhero movies is that both Marvel and DC have put out some clunkers recently. After Endgame it’s difficult to see where to go and Marvel has had a bunch of uneven stuff. The good ones still get viewed. The last SpiderMan seemed quite popular as was the Sony Spiderverse movie. The last Guardians movie was great as far as my viewing. Not sure how that is being perceived in the bigger picture. The Rob Pattinson Batman was pretty good. The Joker if that counts? They have to find their focus again and it will help them.

Joker is a movie. Im not saying its perfect but its a movie. Most of super hero stuff is a product. I would say western cinema have real problems because I have some different companies and no one is talking about modern cinema stuff, may be only specific directors. I m tallking about movies and tv series. Few years ago we were talking a lot about oscar, about winners and losers, now its not a thing for discussion. And I would say recent works of Anderson or Ritchie(after Gentlemen) or Wright arent good too. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy, but third episode is a dummy. I think its a problem of desire to make a movie for everyone.
The last thing from super hero stuff I liked was Peacemaker. But it was a rare thing for me. New Spider man animation movie is great visually, but again, its a movie about nothing. Weak conceptual component. I should admit visual part is great, and as an attraction its still great.
May be popularity of some modern horror stuff will create new wave of modern cinema. Atlanta isnt horror tv series but still working great with suspense, modern tv makers should look in this territory.

I didnt watch a lot of anime stuff because its full of fillers, but now fillers are the movies or even tv series about super heroes, where there is no special meaning, deep story and at least some semantic component, except to release a local product for a little feeding of the general story, which in itself does not really stand to spend so much time on it.

I think with the superhero movies it depends upon what you expect to get out of the movie. I have a few rules for them - 1- move it along 2- good dialogue and 3- don't insult the audience and do anything too stupid. I don't expect greatness from a superhero movie and just want to be entertained so I grade them on that scale. Maybe I'd add a fourth category of make it look good. Guardians movies work well in my evaluation. They have snappy funny dialogue and the story is simple but not stupid. Similarly, I enjoyed the Deadpool movies and the Thor movies made by Taika Waititi. The movies that take themselves too seriously always let me down and most of the DC movies have suffered from this when I watch them.

I like first two guardians movie, especially the first one, Im ok with first Deadpool movie, didn’t watch second,.. or did? I don’t even remember. First Thor of TW was very fun and straight, I don’t like his second movie. And I like his previous movies too.
DC made good job with Batman and Nolan(first movie was boring), and Joker. I like Wonder Woman even with a lot of stupidity in script - good dialogues and main characters have good chemistry.
Very often this movies can’t give anything to audience on my taste, can’t tell interesting stories of characters and try to make way to much. It’s better to simplify. And there were too many similar movies. They are having the same level of “emptiness” like it was in 2000s but with modern taste of it.

I rewatched the second Thor with Waititi recently to test the picture on a new TV I had gotten. It was much better on rewatch than I had initially thought when watching it in the theater. It may be that familiarity smoothed over some of the clunky spots? For Guardians 3 only issue is that an arc for each character is shoe horned into the movie. I think Gunn did this as he's not going to do any more Guardians movies and he wanted to push each character to where he wanted to leave them. I think it's ambitious when more than one or two characters have an arc in a show or movie and in this one you had at least four and then bits and pieces of several more. That's too much. The only arc should have been Rocket's and Mantis, Peter, and Adam Warlock didn't need to suffer identity crises. Then you have a subtle shift for Gunn's brother with the fin on his head and Drax sort of evolves as well. It was asking too much. Still, I enjoyed it as I like those characters and I like that it isn't done seriously. I hope they make a Guardians movie with the group we saw in the extra scene at the end of the movie but I'm skeptical they have anyone other than Gunn make a Guardians movie.

Just my 2 cents, Guardians 3 is a good time but is a popcorn movie masquerading as trying to be deeper; nothing wrong with being a fun popcorn movie.

The most recent Thor was a total mess for me. It was made all the worse because I was pre-disposed to like it. I like the director, I like the lead, I like the bad guy, and I like the Thor universe. For the movie to then miss the mark so badly for me was a bummer.

For my money, the best superhero thing right now is Invincible on Amazon Prime. I’m looking for to its return.

Thor would have been fixable for me if they took out the stuff with Zeus and the stuff with Korg. Add some more with Bale's character and the result would have been much more even. Jane should have been the main focus of the movie beyond the battle with Bale's character.

The super hero movie/TV genre is over saturated. I'm a big fan of DC and I have still yet to see Wonderwoman 2 , Black Adam , Shazam 2 etc. I'm not a big Marvel fan but I like Spider-Man a ton. Black Panther was cool too. That and the first Iron Man movie were the only Disney Marvel movies I have watched in theater. I'm gonna get around to catching up on the DC movies I missed but all 4 of those movies didn't have a good reception so I'm not expecting much. I see Blue Bettle got decent reviews for a movie I wasn't really planning on seeing but now I'm gonna give it a shot. I know Marvel has a much better universe in terms of consistency and continuity but it honestly looks like it has gotten way worse after End Game. Marvel can't seem to usher in a new wave of actors/characters since. They have to rely on their stuff fron 5 to 10 years ago with continuations/sequels. Meanwhile DC and James Gunn want to scrap everything and start fresh while booting Afleck + Cavil basically out. Ezra Miller (The Flash) I can understand getting rid of because his version of the character sucks and he seems like a crummy human with the dumb arrests over the last few years. Just too many movies to keep up with nowadays but not enough good ones where you finish them and instantly wanna see it again (The Dark Knight series , Iron Man , Black Panther , The Joker).

Atleast we have gotten some good gems here and there like Spiderverse 1+2 & the new TMNT wasn't bad. Seems like the animated movies just work better. Even the DC animated movies are usually top tier.
