Connor McDavid will go down as the 2nd best player of all-time

The +/- differentiates the true greats from the scoring artistes who can't be bothered much with that defense stuff.

+/- is literally a team statisic, but since you seem to think it's only for the true greats:

Net goal differential while on the ice (playoffs)

Crosby +0.71 / game
McDavid +1.08 / game

Wait are people unironically using plus minus stats to debate who the goat is?

Johnny Gaudreau 2021: +64
Johnny Gaudreau 2022: -33

Just remember that in case anyone ever trys to say that stat matters ever again lol

These pups don't understand how physical the game was before the 90s. McDavid would be on his ass much more, would need an enforcer on his line and with 32 teams, he's playing against diluted talent

He is a generational talent no doubt. L Better than Gretzky, Orr, Bossy, Howe, Hull, etc?

A little too early to disrespect the all time greats with that I feel.

Add Lemieux…

And he’ll need Stanley Cups to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys
2 years ago it was a debate between McDavid and McKinnon, now all of a sudden it's a debate between McDavid and the 1st coming!

I'm not sure he's better than a lot of guys really. Whether it be Lemieux, Messier, Trottier, etc. On par? Yes indeed. King of the heap? In the words of my good friend Ralph Kramden " don't make me laugh"

If the oilers aren’t a contender then who is? Out of curiosity who do you consider a contender?

For me Vegas, Dallas, Colorado would be the top contenders in the West. Edmonton in the 2nd tier of teams.

They have too many holes in that team and until they show that those are solidified they will be a step below the top teams for me.

Let's use round numbers like big boys

.71 equals 1
1.08 equals 1
1 is the same as 1

I'll balance your checkbook for you too if you need
Today I learned Alex Ovechkin (1.10), Jean Beliveau (1.10) and Mark Messier (1.07) have the same impact as Daniel Briere (0.72), Cory Stillman (0.71) and Scott Gomez (0.70).

Edmonton was significantly more competitive with Vegas than Dallas was. Colorado has massive holes as well in the form of an entire second line to replace from their cup team. Let’s not pretend the oilers have some massive holes here. They are one of the best teams in the league.

McDavid will never have the mystique of Orr and Gretzky. His personality is too bland for that.

He'll have to match Mario's Stanley cup success at least.

He might overtake Gordie in accomplishments, but again Gordie has the mystique, the personality, the gumption. He was Mr. Hockey. What's Connor at this point? Mr. Big Numbers? Not enough, not yet.

I think being the most dynamic skilled player of all time is pretty interesting. I very much enjoy watching him score some of the nicest goals in history.

I watch the game for the skill, not the post game interviews, but maybe that's just me.

same impact? maybe maybe not. same numbers? most assuredly

numbers only take you so far, kinda like putting up a lot of them for a perennial 2nd round exit

Can use more basic numbers if you prefer

Playoff PPG
Crosby 1.12
McDavid 1.51

Go find Stillman for that one

I don't care about the argument here but you use full career vs someone who played 5 playoffs

Crosby after the same number of playoffs appearances (5) was something like 1.38. At least be just and credible in your claims..

Prime Gretzky was routinely plus 70. Orr was plus 80. Clarke plus 40. Lafleur plus 50.

McDavid has never been higher than plus 28

Let's get a grip on things shall we?
How do you feel about this stat line, Mike?

49 games vs 175 games, is it a perfectly fair comparison? Nope. Crosby has played games outside of his prime etc. It is definitely enough of a sample to say that McDavid has performed better than Crosby in the playoffs so far, which is what my post was implying.

Then don't complain about McDavid having 850 pts and being +114.
Come back when he even gets to the finals let alone wins a cup

I never said he wasn't a great player/talent

To put him on Mount Rushmore is Aristophanes

I don't need McDavid to make the finals to be able to rightfully claim he is a better player (so far) than Crosby both regular season and postseason. Is this thread about teams or individuals?

Pittsburgh Penguins 2005 to present are most certanily better than the Oilers in that same time frame, no argument there.

Gretzky 4
Howe 4
Orr 2
McDavid ZERO
Hull 1
LaFleur 5
Clarke 2
Crosby 3

Enough with this guy already!

Kevin Lowe confirmed as the goat I guess. 🐐 Baaaa.

It's funny that he had a plus minus differential of 97 considering he ran from Calgary to the east to get away from 97.

I understand your point. My point is that I feel it is way premature to anoint him the best of all time or put him in top 5 quite yet

Kevin isn't in this conversation. I'll say we can put Messier and Trottier in though

Granted I mostly saw the tail end of Gordies career but I have McDavid passing him. Wayne, Mario and Bobby remain the top 3 though.
