no the dont. They dont benefit at all. Its just people feeling they are entitled to information they arent entitled to.

quite frankly its none of your, mine or anyone elses business.

Sorry to butt in, but I'm a leaf fan/degenerate gambler cruising through this thread for gambling purposes. Malkin's status affects both my fantasy team, and my gambling habits. The NHL is now in bed with these gambling companies and needs to change these archaic injury reporting rules. The NHL could really learn a thing or 2 from the NFL about this sort of thing or people will take there money elsewhere.

Edit: also please get better soon Geno :(

nope.

you bought a ticket to a hockey game. That game will be played.

If you bought a hockey ticket contingent on player ______ being in the lineup, your not that bright as a player not playing is a common variable and your feelings can eat sh*t.

If thats a make or break for you be smarter and don't buy tickets until game time.

What did my feelings have to do about anything?

If anything, I'm slightly hurt that you'd sign my yearbook like that, especially after all the times we cut math class together.

yeah i don't get the "nothing to gain" thing when there's nothing to lose either. every other team is straight up. are the pens actually secretly smarter than every other team because they're pointlessly obtuse?

I do think they have something to gain actually. I think it would help there PR. Personally, If I feel as though things are kept from me for whatever reason, I'll be less inclined to invest my time or money in that person or cause. I'm sure I'm not the only individual who feels that way either.

I feel if it was to any real advantage, the league would have made a rule against it at some point.

It's to protect our players from being targeted for future injury. You know, because how well that's worked with keeping our roster healthy these past dozen years and all.

But that only works if people can't actually watch the games. Even if you just know it's a lower body injury, it's not like you have to be a brain surgeon to target it.

I know. It's just being obtuse and pissing people off who they really shouldn't be pissing off. But that's ok. In a couple years when the team struggles mightily and attendance is down, this might play a small factor as to if you want to support the team or not by shelling out good money for a sub par on ice product.

I think it’s a mindset thing. The less info, the less questions from media, the less of a distraction it is for the players.

Well, maybe not a distraction but like, if you’re not playing well but you know some guy will be back in a week you might just subconsciously rest on your laurels knowing you’re getting help soon. Rather than if it’s just vague and open-ended the players might feel more like “we have to make it work with what we have, we’re not getting any help.” Maybe. Don’t agree with it but that’s been a theory I’ve had.

I think that’s why teams often keep guys that are going to be out a while away from the team. You don’t want guys to be constantly reminded that injuries are a real risk, or even that they’ll be getting good players back eventually, which can affect how they play.

Some of the vagueness of course is that they just don’t know. Injuries don’t all heal the same and some things can be played through and some can’t. Sceviour could have his opposable thumbs removed and you’d hardly notice. Malkin with a tweaked knee can have a severe effect on his game.

Well hell, just make up something then! If it’s a left knee injury, just say it’s a cracked rib! Always keep them guessing...

As far as gambling goes.

1. dont lay down money you arent willing to lose.
2. Just wait until the lineups come out if you worried about an injury. Anyone putting money on a Pens game for a week from now, probably has bigger issues that if Malkin is day to day or week to week.

I think it could be MORE of a distraction. If they just come out and state the injury and the expected timeframe, that’s it, case closed and they’ll update as he progresses. By keeping everything in the desk, they keep people guessing and asking questions and speculating on what’s going on...

If they want it to be less of a distraction then just lay it all out there and be done...

I agree. You're adding unnecessary drama and intrigue by what their current method is. Honestly after 12 or so years of this idiocy you'd think they'd understand it helps no one. I'm sure they know or at least have an excellent idea as to this time frame.

And worst of all? Just when Geno was back in shape and looking great, he’ll have to start over again when he gets back and it will take time for him to get back to form...

He'll need to get ''back 2 good''.

I agree. I’d add that one flaw in my theory is that the injured player knows his own status and probably just shares it with his teammates.

If it were me I’d just say UBI, LBI, surgery or no and a very rough estimate on return and I’d just come out and say it rather than wait for the media to ask. Just first thing at the next presser. Just say “that’s it... and any changes we’ll let you know, and please no more questions about X player, we’ll update you.”
