It was first game of the season ... and hopefully they find the smelling salts before tonights game.

Last night wasn't about goaltending.

It was about no system of play, and turnovers in the O-Zone.

And the game winner was about the defensemen being completely inept.

What an extremely poorly executed game by most of the lines and most of the defenders.

if anything Murray held them in game in 2nd period and gave them a chance in 3rd .. team is slow .. can't afford to give up all those man advantage breaks on our tenders .. or if we do play like that then go get Vasi ASAP and rely on him to make 8 10 bellers every night .. team can't expect Vasi type tending on 4-5M in AAV type guy .. we need to allocate 10M and get da guy if they want to keep pinching slow D men who can't get back

It's much more than one game tho. Murray has been crap for over 3 years now.

But that's regular season and we only care about playoffs, how has he been there?

Great idea, we can trade for Bobrovsky!

Bobbo is done .. got his $$$ deal and playing out da string now .. I would stay with Murray over him as he has won 2 Cups and 1 of those Cups he carried da Pens to victory

Goalies get really nervous when they see the team in front of them getting outskated that badly. You can't rest even a second mentally when you know you can have an odd man break coming your way at any second. It wears them out really quick.

Goalies are going to keep getting run out of this place for as long as our crazy system of allowing so many odd man rushes continues.

I am only kidding cause I don't know why we have to attach a dollar amount to players playing levels. Saying we need a 10 million dollar goalie makes no sense. Which one? Price? Bob? Vasi? There are different goalies at that price point.

The best goalie right now is making under 6 mill

The Leafs blueline was quite poor last night. Aside from Muzzin’s catastrophic giveaway at the worst time, the amount of casual retreating and regrouping under moderate pressure looks like a massive weakness. Of course they want to play possession hockey but we don’t have 3x pairs of Rafalski and Lidstrom back there. Sometimes you just need an simple hard zone exit and enough forechecking to push things out to the neutral zone and initiate a puck retrieval there. Holy cow this team has the most atypical instincts.

I agree with those challenging the system.. the defence looked slow even rielly who isnt a burner

They dont have the skating to play so aggressive.. or maybe if the forwards gave more of a shit they could.. but it might need to be tweaked

I think both are true. The team in front of Murray was sloppy and he kept us afloat for a period of time in the second period. He also let in a weak glove-side goal at an inopportune time, which is very Matt Murray.

The team needs to be better and Murray needs to not let in weak goals at inopportune times.

I think people are being a little unrealistic with Murray's performance last night. The only goal I would say he really should've had was Caufield's 2nd because he had an open look and it was from around the top of the circle. Even then it was a snipe from one of the best shooters in the league.

1st goal was a 2 on 1 and beaten by a good shot. 3rd goal was a onetimer off a deflection from a skate. 4th one was a snipe around a screening Holl.

You take Murray's first half of Game 1 and Samsonov's second half of Game 2 and you basically have goaltending. Maybe they should move to a starter/reliever model.

I think Samsonov looked a bit nervous during the first part of the game too - that should go away as he gets more relaxed and confident as the season goes on.

He was able to shut the door when it mattered

I'm sure it didn't help facing his old team, even more pressure to get the win

Samsonov has all the tools and capabilities to be a great goalie, it's just between the ears he's gotta work on. If he can calm down it'll do him wonders. I hope Murray can be a good influence in that sense as he plays a very relaxed game in comparison

As a penguin fan just got the 30 seconds highlights and could see that "glovehand" Murray was back in all his glory.

Worst glove hand I've ever seen.

James Reimer always received the same description, and yet he's still in the league and had a decent year 6 years after leaving Toronto.

Maybe there's hope for Murray, or maybe it's the team play?

When Murray is on positionally he is a good goalie - despite his glove.
