The Murray situation is seriously scary.

It's to early to panic but this was a high risk move from day 1. We're committed to this guy now so getting rid of him mid-season if it doesn't work out is going to be prove to be difficult.

Yup. It's a complete joke that we're risking wasting this season with Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Reilly on Matt-frigging-Murray & Ilya Samsanov. We'll never do anything with this goaltending. What a "plan".

I think Murray showed promise. I'm with Keefe on this one they sabotaged him at the end. Form was bad but it's game 1 and it broke down like any goalies form would break down being left out to dry on first game of the season.

With that said however I play samsonov again without switching back to Murray if he plays well tonight

It always comes back to Will Nylander, a soft player with skill who’s cap hit has made Dubas make a lot of bad decisions disguised as smart decision within the cap constraints.

Trade Nylander and open up that cap space for a goalie and another Dman.

Toronto can’t win with the goaltending they have. You can look at all the photos you want of Murray with his Cup rings, it won’t change the reality that he can’t catch pucks and he doesn’t track the play well, and he’s been below average for 5 years.

I guess the plan is to continue getting worse at skating.

If you want cap space for a goalie just get rid of the current ones genius

Lmao any of the leafs secondary scoring would vanish if you got rid of nylander.

You expect JT to drive a line nowadays 🤣

The cap structure of the Leafs is bad, but you don’t solve that by keeping the bad contracts. Nylander brings you back an asset

By game 10 of Matt Murray’s Leafs career you’ll be hoping the Leafs had cap space to bring in a starter who is in the zone in 2022/2023 and not in 2018.

Secondary scoring is the least of the Leafs worries. Without a goalie the Leafs are done. Nylander being pretty gets you nowhere if there isn’t someone reliable to stop pucks

Yeah, It's willy's fault, not JT's, lol.

JT's contract is the one that is currently killing the team. He's the only star player not living up to his contract.

Wait are you really insinuating that Nylander has a bad contract?

A near PPG player without top line usage at 7m is a bad contract?

Love how the go to is always Nylander and not someone like Muzzin.

1st and 3rd goals no fault on the goalie.

But the 2nd and 4th goals...wtf is that technique?

He is brutal - he is getting so low and small in his net, he is flaring out way beyond the posts and covering net that isn't even there while giving up a ton of net upstairs.

On the 2nd goal (lower picture) he doesn't even track the puck - instead it looks like he's trying to dodge it.

Also, i noticed he had really poor balance and kept losing his balance falling forward a LOT.

Not a good outing. Looking forward to Samsonov tomorrow.

He looks bigger because he stands up …..

Can't believe people can visibly see how worse this team becomes year after year in skating but also still want to trade Nylander, one of the best skaters in the league. Even some of our fast guys have almost no other above average skating traits like agility etc

It’s the second goal for me…… That’s the perfect picture of my concern. Even if it was deflected. Why is his gleve
Turned in… I haven’t played in forever but shouldn’t the glove be facing rhe shot up by his ears? Or down in line with his thigh? Either way it’s like he is literally holding a beer. How could he ever catch something like that

Perhaps he’s following the advice of Chad the Beer Man in Dunedin….”If you can’t catch a ball (puck), catch a buzz….ehhhhh”

I give Murray a pass on the 2nd goal because that was filthy work by Caufield. Eyes up the whole time, little stick handle to make Murrays mind think pass and then gets the glove hand to go to sleep with a nice release. If you can run a drive with skill like that you will be able to get goalies to mess up. You need to stop Caufield from getting that drive in the first place

Edit: Caufields eyes were also on pass before he looks at murray and shoots. It's a very nice goal

Prove me wrong.

Dubas obviously believes in these guys, especially Murray, because you have to think Dubas is toast if our goaltending disintegrates, and that Dubas knows this.

I don't especially believe in our goalies but I'm not going to draw conclusions from one game where I think he wasn't great but wasn't bad.

It's much more than one game tho. Murray has been crap for over 3 years now.

I think your Nylander intel might be out of date. There was probably a time when moving on from Nylander for a similar young impact player would have made sense. When we had guys like Brown, Kap and Johnsson pushing up showing promise and we could plausibly downgrade at Willie to get stronger elsewhere. That organizational depth is gone and Nylander is as integral as anyone else.

I agree but I'm going to judge Murray as an individual on his play as a Leaf. His prior play doesn't matter in how I evaluate him.

His prior play matters significantly in how I evaluate Dubas, since Dubas acquired him.

Murray was serviceable last night. You can’t ask him to stand on his head but if the team protected him and played an organized focused game we could have gotten a routine win.
