It's just a positive sign having Woll playing well right now. I agree he's unlikely to be moved since next year's goaltending situation could swing in any given direction. So nice to have him there to potentially make the jump as backup next year.

And nice that Murray and Samsonov have both mostly bounced back from those shaky games they've had. Samsonov is still not quite there yet, but that's ok. Halfway through the year and I think both have shown pretty good play overall. This was mostly the good case scenario (minus a few things). Just have to see how the second half goes and of course the playoffs.

That's about it. Jury is out on Samsonov and we'll see after this season how it played out. Murray has been better lately, but we're half way there. There is a legit chance that we promote Woll to backup next season and trade Samsonov or other way around, but good thing is that we can make that decision based on how all of our goaltenders play. If we can trust Murray he'll be here anyway next season.

Time is our friend in this case. It is interesting how we ended up here, after all these ramifications during the summer.

Samsonov is only signed to a 1 year contract and will be an RFA at the end of this season. If the Leafs choose not to give him a qualifying offer to retain his rights, he could become a UFA once again like the Capitals did with him.

His qualifying offer isn't that bad, but of course if he bombs we can do that. I would rather see him traded, since we have those rights and arbitration isn't big risk for next team. Could easily see us trading him for 3rd or 4th in he case his at least adequate. We'll see. I don't know what to think about our goalies at the moment considering next season. Playoffs will give us tons of insight and also their health in long run.

It does seem like Woll is going to play himself into the mix but what to do would be an off season decision.

He surely is and I'm pretty sure that we get at least some minor tweaks and tears to our top guys. Wouldn't be surprised if we see him in the NHL this season for game or two.

I'm gladly enjoying the crow I continue to eat. I railed on the Murray trade hard, but outside of a few usual blips along the way, he's been very good. Hope he keeps it up, because he certainly has all the tools there to achieve success.

I remember wanting Ullmark when he hit the UFA market and many shitting on the idea. Guy was posting good numbers on an awful Buffalo team, no surprise he’s been as good as he has with the Bruins.

Regardless with Murray, Samsonov and Woll between the pipes, goaltending doesn’t seem to be the problem anymore in Toronto. Let’s hope these guys continue to play well.

PS, Murray has definitely won me over. He’s so calm in net and comes up big in the moments we need him.

To be honest I still think the trade itself could have been better. Murray was coming off of two bad years. We could have either got more retention or more/better assets in my opinion.

His play this year (so far) has been pretty good though. Happy that it's worked out so far.

Yeah, no disagreement there.

Although at the time of trade I thought we basically took on a dead asset with a hefty price tag. So for Murray to be doing what he has done, I won't complain too much in the grand scheme of things.

I’m not ready to eat that crow yet until I see playoff success.

Thant being said I’m in food prep mode right now

I've always liked Ullmark but I said at the time that he's a top tier backup goalie and that I don't think he's a starter. He's having an incredible year but you've gotta see it for more than one year to claim that he's a legit starter. He and Swayman could be benefitting from good coaching, a rock solid defence as well as 2 of some of the best 2 way centers of all time as well.

From what I heard, more retention was never gonna be on the table because of the Sens being one of the poorer teams in the NHL. I definitely thought we were getting more in assets though. Especially after it was reported that they were willing to attach a nice piece to take him. I was disappointed that it was only a 3rd and a 7th.

Agreed - I fully expected more than a 3rd and a 7th.

He's looked good so far though. Lets hope that he keeps it up.

With the benefit of hindsight, considering that Kyle Dubas traded the Leafs 1st round pick in 2022 to Chicago for them taking on Petr Mrazek and 100% of his contract. Did anyone expect a similar return from Ottawa for agreeing to trade for Murray?

I can eat some crow now regarding Murray. Playoffs will of course be the ultimate test but his regular season so far has been well above what I expected after the trade and how his time in Ottawa went. Samsonov I always had hope for given his youth and pedigree but I was concerned that Murray was completely washed.

Still just barely halfway through the season. Gotta hope they both stay healthy.

We didn't trade a 1st to get rid of Mrazek. We traded down 13 draft slots to get rid of Mrazek. The media really worked the fanbase into a frenzy leading up to the Murray trade, with all sorts of fantastical and unrealistic scenarios, so the normal return we got for taking on a slightly overpaid goalie after retention looked underwhelming.
Like what do people think 2 years of like 700k cap is worth?

We traded down 13 spots in the late 1st which is worth right around a 3rd and 7th.

Yeah Mrazek was just brutal from the signing to paying to get rid of him. Dubas had a chance to take away some of that sting with Murray but he wasn't up to the task.
