Yes, the Leafs did get an early 2nd round pick.

However, one can argue that since Ottawa was desperate to trade Murray and the fact he turned down a trade to Buffalo, which still had Ottawa retaining his salary and flipping the 16th pick for the 7th pick. It's fair to say that Kyle Dubas should have done more to get extra assets like a 1st round pick.

Even if the deal was just 16 for 7 + Murray, SJ traded down 11 to 27 and it only cost 2 2nds. Trading down 9 spots probably clocks in at a 2nd worth of value, so we lost out on maybe a ~5th worth of value with 3+7 instead.

For the record, Murray is just under 4.7m, not 6.25m, and Murray held more player value than Mrazek.
That's because of Ottawa retaining 25% of Murray's salary.

When Mrazek got traded to Chicago they took on his whole contract, which is $3.8 million AAV.

There was no way Toronto was going to take on Murray at $6.25 million AAV. Instead, they are paying him $4.68 million against their salary cap.

I'm still hopeful Samsonov takes the #1 spot, people are already forgetting Murray has already missed a month getting injured his very first game

People have short memories about the Murray trade. It was take it or leave it because Ottawa was moving on otherwise.

Both sides said so. Not sure why people are complaining.....it was take the deal they took or nothing.

Please remember this before we keep having imaginary conversations about situations that could never happen.

Samsonov was pretty stellar again tonight, the boys just didnt have the legs going at all.

Samsonov only faced 22 shots totaling in allowing 3 goals against and posting and .864 sv% in the process.

What he lacked in this game was the run support from his teammates to allow them to outscore the opposition and post the win.

That is not to say that Samsonov didn't make some good saves in the process only that he saw limited action and went long periods of time without a shot against.

In 5 of his last 6 starts have below <.900 sv% and winning 3 and losing 3 in the process.

You're being disingenuous Mess .. Samsonov made some big saves through the first couple of periods to keep the Leafs' in the game. Detroit sat back a lot in the third defending the lead rather than push the attack.

The 3 goals is misleading because the third was with 20 second left on the PP when Detroit already had a 3-1 lead and the game was basically over. Samsonov was very good keeping the Leafs within a goal or two at times and they almost came back.

A goal allowed is a goal allowed. Goaltending has been excellent this year, let’s hope it keeps up.

Ball might be back in Sammy's court now.
I think the two goalies being relatively close in ability means that the general back-and-forth idea can't be easily dismissed for the remainder of the regular season.

I think Samsonov is officially out of his rough patch. He's looked dynamite his last 4 games and deserved a shutout tonight as he outdueled Hellebuyck

I think it's fair to say that if it wasn't for the Leafs having to kill off that 5v3, chances are Samsonov would have had a shutout. Still 37 saves on 38 shots was a great performance by him.

Samsonov is way better than Murray. No way Murray should be starting over him.
