This situation is so weird. Under normal circumstances you would treat Sam as your goalie of the future and be eager for him to assume the #1 mantle. Murray's contract and Sam's Rfa status make his future with us a bit uncertain. I'd hate to see us have to trade him even though he could potentially get an interesting return.

Ah well, worry about that in the summer.

Should give Sammy a run here between now and the all star break.

Problem is the Leafs will have a 9-day break over the all star break. I think you have to give Murray a few starts to stay fresh, and then look to give the hot hand a run if one is struggling.

The Leafs have an interesting discussion this summer .. They've got Murray under contract next year, Sammy as an RFA, and Woll knocking on the door for an opportunity

Having too many goaltenders isn't a bad thing.

Goalies dont get interesting returns. Especially those in Sammy's situation.

For sure. However, Samsonov requires a new contract and Woll looks to be subject to waivers. The possibility exists that the team will only be able to go forward with two of the three goalies by next season.

Murray has redeemed himself so far this year a bit, for a 1 year rental option for a team there might be suitors.

Moving him would cover Sammy's raise and Woll's salary. Problem is that tandem is still pretty unproven.

It's too early to tell what the best option is. A lot rides on this second half and the playoffs.

If Murray was traded and I'm not saying the Leafs should do that or it needs to happen. Ottawa is already paying 25% of his contract, so they wouldn't be taking on his whole salary.

That's fair. As of now, I'm still looking to run back the Murray-Samsonov tandem and taking my chances with Woll and waivers. What might persuade me to change my thinking is Woll receiving additional NHL opportunities and either of the incumbents separating from the other in becoming more of a starter than a 1A.

Give Murray a few starts to stay fresh…….he is not fresh now, he has been simply awful

I would prefer to keep both Murray and Samsonov next year and assuming he plays well run with Samsonov as the guy after that. The reason being we have 4 big FAs during the summer of 24(Matthews, Nylander, Liljegren, Sandin) that will need raises that combine up to 10 million dollars. Brodie is off the books, the cap might go up 3 or 4 million that offseason but it would be really useful to have Murray's money to play with as well. Rather than reallocating that to someone else this offseason and then said player still using it long term.

Tagging outgoing money with incoming money or raises is something that has to be planned for. The question is obviously what does the breakdown look like next year and will we have the flexibility to spend more on goaltending for 1 season to be able to execute that plan.

Woll needing waivers next year is an annoying wrinkle though. If you keep both surely you're not running 3 goalies so you risk losing Woll on waivers.

Why would we have to trade him?

How easy can this possibly be for Keefe to figure out?

Keefe is so worried about overworking them he doesn't think of who the opponents are or home and away.
Should the goalie coach not be involved in the discussion about who is ready. It is obvious that Murray had a head issue and Sam has a style and fitness issue.

While Samsonov deserves more rope right now, it would be stupid to let Murray run cold after a couple bad outings. It feels like it wasn't long ago the situation was reversed and people wanted Murray to have an extended run over Samsonov. I get the "what have you done for me lately" but both of these goalies should be kept relatively fresh.
