Like our goaltending this year but to be honest let’s see in the playoffs can’t remember last time our goalie stole a game in the playoffs

While Samsonov deserves more rope right now, it would be stupid to let Murray run cold after a couple bad outings. It feels like it wasn't long ago the situation was reversed and people wanted Murray to have an extended run over Samsonov. I get the "what have you done for me lately" but both of these goalies should be kept relatively fresh.

I honestly won't be surprised if Murray ends up the go to guy for the majority of the Leafs playoff time

His cold moments aside, he's mentally understands the postseason the most. Young guys run the risk of getting rattled too easily

If the Leafs want the playoff experience it should be Murray who starts for them. I know 2016 and 2017 was a while ago, however no one can deny he won back to back Stanley Cups as the Penguins #1 Goalie.

If he doesn't look good like we saw against Florida, I'm sure Keefe won't have any problems brining in Samsonov.

Probably Cujo and Belfour years.
I remember in 2001 when Toronto swept Ottawa, Cujo had shutouts in the first two games and the Senators scored a total of three goals in the four games played. Just looking at the stats, in Game 3 their first goal of the series didn't happen until the 16:51 mark of the 3rd period.

In 2004 when Toronto defeated Ottawa in seven games, Belfour had three shutouts in Games 2, 3, and 5.

Crazy how it didn't matter what happened in the regular season that come playoff time, the Leafs just owned the Sens.

I remember Lalime allowing some pretty bad goals too.

In 2001 during the regular season Ottawa was 5-0 against Toronto. When the playoffs started Toronto ends up sweeping them.

In 2004 these two goals by Joe Nieuwendyk is what ended Lalime's career in Ottawa and got Jacque Martin fired.

Freddy Andersen games 5 and 6 against Boston in 2018 put up some savage performances. Too bad he flopped horribly in game 7.

Here was the winning goal Andersen allowed in Game 7 during the 2018 series, when the score was tied 4-4 in the 3rd period.

I remember that game 5 in 2018. That was all time bad officiating. I think we had like 5 straight penalties?

Freddy faced like 45 shots and stood tall, amazing night for him

Toronto had 8 total penalties.

From the 2nd period until the end of the 3rd period they had the final four penalties called against them.

You can see a detail breakdown of all the calls because at the 12:51 mark of the 2nd period, there was roughing calls made against Jake Gardiner, Zach Hyman, and to David Backes on Boston.

At the 13:18 mark of the 2nd period Tyler Bozak got a penalty for interference, which was the start of those final four straight penalties called on the Leafs for the remainder of the game.

Why is Jake playing the body and not the puck.... A simple stick lift or poke check and that chance is over.

You could say he stole game 5 that year, but game 6 we were the better team. We were also the better team game 7 and he completely blew it.

It hasn't been long since people were shitting on Sammy for a slump.. how the turntables..

But it's nice to see Samsonov string together some great games to bounce back, particularly while Murray has a slump of his own.

Samsonov has the draft pedigree and has flashed his potential a lot this season .. Murray has two cup rings and veteran poise/experience, and that's flashed a fair bit this season too.

You ride the hot hand into the playoffs. Simple as that.

Really nice article about Curtis Sanford and the Leafs goaltending (apologies if already posted): Ilya Samsonov, Maple Leafs have Curtis Sanford to thank for surprise goaltending success

Some key takeaways:

- A big part of goaltending is psychological, especially in a place like Toronto. Having a good coach who can work with the goalies on this can make a big difference
- Experience matters. One of the positive traits about Sanford is that he's relatable with each of them having been there, done that in the NHL, AHL, and KHL
- Flex your management style - people are motivated, inspired, and perform at their peak in different ways. Having an adaptable approach for the individual can pay big dividends for the individual and the organization. Being someone's buddy and motivator in addition to being a coach or boss may not work in every situation, but it might just be what's needed to succeed as a goaltender in Toronto.
- Developing a system, routine, and good habits matter. It allows progress to be measured, which allows retrospectives on understanding what worked, what didn't, and what could be better. Creating a specific plan, reviewing it, and improving on it for each individual takes more time and effort, but it also enables more detailed adjustments that result in more tangible improvements. It also earns trust from each individual because they feel that the catered plan "understands" their strengths/development areas and who they are as people.

Samsonov is one of the top goalies in the league that have played 20 games, which is about what a platoon system would look like with the number of games played.

Right now the crease is his until he stumbles.

He gambled on a one year deal, looking like a good gamble right now, but it is early.
