Goaltending is a crapshoot.

Im firmly in the never draft one super high and never sign one for huge dollars camp.
I used to agree with that sentiment but we are starting to see goalies that were drafted 1st round, starting to justify why taken so high.

Vasi
Oettinger
Samsonov

Now Wallstedt and Askarov coming up but Askarov has some bust potential to him.

Having said that some of the other elite goalies around the league were taken in later rounds. Like Saros, Shesterkin, Sorokin, Hellebuyck.

Yeah historically a lot of good goalies end up being taken beyond the 1st round. He's only played one NHL game but Dustin Wolf is looking like a real gem for Calgary and was taken in the last round.

Yeah, most goalies just need more time to develop. Guys like Vasi, Samsonov etc just have that combination of size, tools, athleticsm, that is hard to pass up in the first round.

I've had many arguments on here about smaller goalies and why you shouldnt overlook them over say 2" in height. Wolf was a guy I was saying the Leafs should've taken when he was still available in the 7th and I think we took Loponen instead. Now the guy is arguably the best goalie prospect in the world and is right there with Levi, Wallstedt and Askarov. The guy has been the best goalie in each league he's played in since being drafted. I believe he could be the next Saros and possible Vezina winner someday.

Good goalies have always come from the first round. That's nothing new. I have zero stats to back it up, it just seems like goalies have basically the same success rate of being NHL quality from like pick 11 to the end of the draft.

I would take one late 1st. Not top 10

Matt Murray and Jordan Binnington were former 3rd round picks who came in with similar inexperience as Woll and got hot to help lead their teams to a cup.

Definitely risky, but recent history has shown that they can catch lightning in a bottle.
Those are great examples but lightning in a bottle (nice pun) is not the ideal way to beat Tampa, we gotta kick their ass and pray it doesn't go to game 7.

For all the shitting on Campbell we've done this season, he never looked as bad as Samsanov did tonight.

Incredible that he can go from middle of the pack starter in 80% of his games to complete sieve in game 1. We aren't even asking him for anything more than good.

Samsonov was in his head before the puck even dropped. Looked like he just completely threw everything he knew about goaltending out the window.

Honestly I would start woll for game 2. It’s a desperate move, but the leafs need to play with desperation And it just sends a message. Besides a Rookie goalie can go on a hot run In the playoffs. It has happened in the past.

frankly samsonov doesn’t deserve to get the start based on the performance. The leash needs To be shorter.

Quality goalies make the save on Kucherov before end of 1st, keeping their team in the game. Mediocre goalies do not.

He actually takes a night off on a regular basis for god knows what reason but typically follows an .875 night with a .920 one. He has had back to back weak starts only once in 2023 and is a goal against better at home than on the road so game 2 will not be the same. He got the turd game out of the way right?

Nobody was expecting a sweep and it isn't like the skaters were playing their best hockey and just couldn't handle Tampa's A game. Tampa beat the Isles 5-0 this month and then allowed 23 goals as they dropped the next 4 games. That's who the Bolts are this year and we will see more of that. Sami will be fine.

Campbell gave up 5 goals game 2 of the series last year. Not much of a difference in the grand scheme of things

He looked off his game from puck drop. Hope he looks dialed in tomorrow and the nerves are gone. This team desperately needs good goaltending in the playoffs.

Well, he did.
