If it makes you feel any better the Bruins are relying on a goalie with 2 playoff games played that wasn’t wanted by his team and another with 6 playoff games.

Min 40 GP:

3rd SV%
2nd GAA
4th SO

Hopefully he holds decent in playoffs.
I don’t think it was a a case that the Sabres didn’t want Ulmark. It’s more they wanted to re-sign him but he chose to move on.

Samsonov is top 5 in G.A.A and top 5 in sv %.

If he wasn’t a leaf we would be complaining about Dubas on why some other team picked up a top goalie like him, for nothing.

I’m confident enough in Samsonov and Woll. Murray can be let go in the offseason. How they get rid of him in a cap-friendly manner without giving up picks, I’m not sure.

I can't speak to Murray, but for me I was playing in a tournament and ruptured 2 discs in my lower back.

No matter how hard I worked I was never the same and my career was on the clock.

After that I was in a cycle of play a season or two -> tweak the injury again -> 3 months of rehab -> play a season or two -> tweak the injury again -> 3 months of rehab and eventually body and mind just erodes until you arent even close to the same goalie because in the back of your mind every single save could be the one that puts you back on the shelf. I played about 5-6 years where I was not the same goalie - sure i'd have brief stretches where i could hit that level again, and even won a title, but it was always a time bomb.

As a non pro I hung on to the game way longer than I should have, I can only imagine how battered some of these guys must be and what they must be going through to stay in the game.
Sorry to hear that. That's a bad injury.

Samsonov 5 mil x 5 years, would you?

I’m fully confident in a Samsonov Woll duo moving forward.
Nope. Rfa so I would qualify then figure it out.
Woll looks solid so we have leverage.
That said I wouldn't low ball him because I believe he's good but why should we offer 5X5 to start?

I'd give Samsonov something around 4.5x3 (kinda my limit). Mentally it becomes different when you become "the guy" and hes never really had that in a season before. Then have Woll in the back up, maybe it becomes a 60-40 split.

If you got him to that, could even buy out murray if needed, and in the 2nd year youre still only paying 7.3m total for your goalies.

The goalie position has proven to be very volatile across league. I really believe in Woll as the future number 1.

Much will likely depend on Samsonov post season performance.

I would think you’d want a situation that would give Woll every opportunity to win the #1 spot and not overcommit to Samsonov long term.

Perhaps a shorter term deal such ~4m x 3 ?

Samsonov gets a decent raise but not crippling if his performance reverts to his Washington days (which may be unlikely).

I love all the Dubas apologists on here pretending that our goaltending isn't an issue. He's been in charge of the team for how many years now? In every single effing one of those years we've had to sweat about our goaltending and all of the used band aids that Dubas constantly patches the position with. Sure, Samsonov looks ok right now, but so did Campbell and Andersen during the regular season. Even if Samsonov does step up and cement himself in the position this year we can't afford to re-sign him because of the Murray debacle. Sure, the man who signed Michael Hutchinson to multiple extensions has this goaltending position figured out. Sure he does.

Well, isn't this special.

No, the goaltending position is to volatile to be handing out long term contracts to non elite players

I'd try for 3M-3.5M over a couple of years
He's still an RFA

Five years later who knew Hunter left a diamond in the rough ?

Sure, let's ignore his ****house overall drafting record because of Woll and his 1 great season so far

That's the point. He drafted terribly past the 1st but he left us Woll.

I'd want to see Woll next season before I'd go that far

He's good but I want to see at least another season like this before I'd be comfortable giving him a 1A 1B workload

If Sammy can handle a true starter's workload (55-60 games), Woll can handle the rest as the backup next year. If he grows you can give him more games but Sammy should be the clear starter unless or until Woll wrestles it from him.

You will need to find a solid #3 as insurance.

Ilya Samsonov: Feb 22 1997 (22 overall, 2015 Entry Draft)

Joseph Woll: Jul 12 1998 (62 overall, 2016 Entry Draft)

Your right, we'd need a good solid experienced #3G if we're moving on from Murray

A good #4G we can move up and down without waivers wouldn't hurt either
