I guess he has, but he eventually is going to get lucky. I mean he traded for Campbell and signed Mrazek, whom I’m guessing are 2 of these. He had to correct both those mistakes, made another mistake with Murray. Samsonov has played well, I guess he’s hitting .250
Regular season hockey is NOT playoff hockey .. 2 different games .. 2 different set of rules .. 2 different games played with more pace and less time and space with puck .. 2 different physical games .. rating a tender before playoffs is like making a decision on a wife before you live with her .. some guys flat out can't handle playoff hockey they don't have it in them .. and tenders have most important role to play .. their f*ck ups mean you go home

Let's play a game. Guess which goalies are the former Leafs goalies and which goalie is the current Leafs goalie.

I get the outrage about the Murray trade - it sucked, but Dubas did ultimately improve the goaltending.
I'm going to guess these are:

Campbell
Samsonov
Andersen

I was skeptical of the Murray trade when it happened, given that Matt Murray as a Sen was both not good and injured quite a bit, plus the 2 years left on his back-loaded contract. His play as a Leaf has definitely been better, but unfortunately he hasn't been able to stay healthy throughout the season. I wonder how long until the medical staff can get a good handle on his current status. What I find funny is how even when he's been "bad," watching him play hasn't left me feeling nervous the way that previous "whipping boy" goalies has. It must be something about the calmness he projects in his style where I feel comfortable with him in net, even when he's actually not playing very well.

I’m not sure what your response has to do with my post, but I agree with your opinion

why is it a lucky break that three of the goalies have been varying levels of good, but a damning indictment of the team's approach to goaltending that one of their goalies has struggled?

Nobody thought Woll was going to do what he has this season, nobody

Murray has been exactly what he has been for the past half decade

Now we're relying on Samsonov, an RFA with one career playoff win who was so bad the Caps didn't want to keep him

Am I supposed to clap now a team with cup aspirations has a starter with one career playoff win and a backup with about 10 games of NHL experience?
This is a monumental **** up

You're making an assumption.
We brought in 2 goalies with the hopes they would both be amazing.
Murray: could he regain form and had data saying that it was quite possible
Samsonov: could he revise his playing style, something he finally admitted he needed to do.

I said it then that samsonov was the most underrated part of the goalie tandem. Murray has the name and all the focus was on him, but you and most fans assumed he was acquired to be the #1 but at no time did the Leafs act that way. From the start they seemed to split games as evenly as possible

Murray hasn't been good, or fit for half a decade
Data my ass, that Murray trade thread was full of people asking what the hell management were thinking

Every one of them were proven right

I liked the Samsonov pickup but there's no way in hell management didn't see Murray as the #1a in a #1a #1b tandem
The cups he won years ago are the only things Murray had going for him when we traded for him

The Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have a number one goaltender, at least by definition.

Bringing in Matt Murray via trade and Ilya Samsonov via free agency, the Leafs are heading into 2022-23 with two new faces tending their goal this season, with no real indication of how either acquisition will fare in a new environment.

So, two major questions circle the Leafs as they are set to enter training camp tomorrow: how many games will each goalie play? And perhaps more importantly, can they handle the responsibility?

“With regards to the workload for both goaltenders, both have shown that they can carry the load, and we’re trying to [figure it out],” Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas said at today’s media day. “The reality is we need to get them both up and running and it’s gonna be hard to do that if one is playing all the games and the other is sitting. I think the way the schedule is at the beginning of the year kind of makes that easy to let it roll. But that said, it’s going to be based on merit. So how they play in exhibition, and how they play to start the year.”

“Nothing has been promised to either and nothing will be given to [Samsonov and Murray],” Dubas added. “They’ll earn it. We have Erik Kallgren here as well. That will push [the goalies] as he did last year. That’ll be a key thing for us to watch in camp, but we’re very confident in all three.”

Seriously? Nobody thought Woll would be able to start and win a whopping one (1) more game than last year? Let's not act like he's been prime Hasek for us and blown away all possible expectations.

Also kind of funny that for Samsonov it's about his career playoff numbers instead of his current level of play, and for Murray it's about his current level of play and not his career playoff performance.

The Leafs went from the 25th best goaltending last year to 10th this year. If you think that counts as a "monumental f*** up", you're living in your own world

I may be in the minority here but I like posts like this, facts are cool. :)

Being the playoff starting goalie was "what Murray was brought in for" has to be one of the more idiotic narratives this season. Not sure how it got started but all I can say is good grief.

Of course they did, pretty silly to think otherwise.
Obviously it didn't turn out as planned but I think Samsonov will deliver and this whole thing will be moot.

That's for the words to this. I love Woll and I'm excited to see him oflver a larger sample size. I wouldn't mind Sammy Woll tandem next year as I'm comfortable with Sammy now taking a heavier load.

My theory is that goalies seem to have an expiry date, like suddenly they just don't have it. Age injuries and natural gifts come into play. I'm wondering if that's Murray now?

I can't speak to Murray, but for me I was playing in a tournament and ruptured 2 discs in my lower back.

No matter how hard I worked I was never the same and my career was on the clock.

After that I was in a cycle of play a season or two -> tweak the injury again -> 3 months of rehab -> play a season or two -> tweak the injury again -> 3 months of rehab and eventually body and mind just erodes until you arent even close to the same goalie because in the back of your mind every single save could be the one that puts you back on the shelf. I played about 5-6 years where I was not the same goalie - sure i'd have brief stretches where i could hit that level again, and even won a title, but it was always a time bomb.

As a non pro I hung on to the game way longer than I should have, I can only imagine how battered some of these guys must be and what they must be going through to stay in the game.

If it makes you feel any better the Bruins are relying on a goalie with 2 playoff games played that wasn’t wanted by his team and another with 6 playoff games.

Min 40 GP:

3rd SV%
2nd GAA
4th SO

Hopefully he holds decent in playoffs.
