This year, Murray has had a positive impact, saving 1.6 goals more than expected. A significant improvement from our secondary goalie, on top of the massive improvement we've had in our starter and depth.
The point is that Murray was never brought in to be the "secondary goalie". At his cap and pedigree Leafs management presumed him to be the starter. And that is a massive fail. Luckily Samsonov has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Considering how poorly Murray had been playing for several years, the idea that the Leafs just assumed he would be the #1 starting goalie makes no sense at all. They brought in two goalies, Samsonov's pedigree was also notable (former 1st round pick) but both were huge question marks.

You don't bring a goalie in with a cap hit of $4,687,000 on a hunch he just might be the guy. You bring him in because you think he will be your #1 guy.

You don't bring in a goalie who's averaged less than 30 appearances in the last 3 seasons (38, 27 and 20) with corresponding save percentages of .899, .893, and .906 and assume he's going to be your #1 guy, not when you're hoping to be a contender. They were hoping Murray could turn it around and be a #1 starter of course, but it's pretty obvious that assuming he would do so would be insane.

I think Murray is here based on playoff pedigree and having a history with Dubas and Keefe. I also believe that the regular season plan was to run something closer to a 1A/1B rather than having a pure starter and backup combination. Murray could still end up being the go-to in the playoffs (which might not necessarily even include starting every game in the event of any kind of playoff run).

They brought in two goalies to fight for the #1 spot. Each brought their own advantages and disadvantages, risk and reward.
And basic fact is, our goaltending has been quite good this year.

They bought 2 lottery tickets and then waited to see if either paid off. They were hoping that Murray could stay healthy and rebound and that Samsonov could live up to his draft pedigree and find his game.

Samsonov has been the better goalie and deserves to start in the playoffs.
That was exactly what I was saying the summer - what I liked about what Dubas did was that all goalies available were question marks and having 2 lottery tickets seemed better than having 1. :)

I'm a bit surprised at how many people still think Murray will start game 1 in the playoffs. Unless things dramatically change in the last 10 games (possible, but not likely) then it's like you said - Sammy's been better so he starts, no need to overthink this because of "pedigree" or whatever else. Sammy's also been so good at home which is where we're likely to start so yeah, at this point the odds of Sammy starting game 1 for us are probably around 90% or so.

A more interesting question would be will we use both goalies in the 1st round? Impossible to predict because IMHO that depends an how Sammy plays (assuming Sammy starts game 1).

Samsonov has been fine this year. Murray, after starting off well , has played 11 games since Jan 1st and allowed 4 or more goals in 8 of those games. That's very poor.

Both goalies have brought a positive impact to the Leafs this year, and overall, we've gotten good goaltending. That's quite good.

I still like our goalie situation infinitely more than last year. Murray has faltered at times but Samsonov has been excellent and Woll has looked great.

I don't think Woll is going to be on the active roster come playoff time even though he arguably deserves it, but i'll just say it's a real bad look that Murray is appearing to be the worst of our 3 goalies - one of whom is an unproven rookie.

Matt needs to get his shit together and fast.

Folks being a little too hard on Murray no?

Last 3 starts:

2-1
Average of 37 shots/60
.912
+0.13 GSAA/60

I think his play of late has been encouraging as he looked pretty rough coming off injury.

How do you guys feel about Shesterkin with his:

33-12-7
Average of 30 shots/60
.914
+0.07 GSAA/60

Pretty much everybody thinks he's one of the best goalies in hockey right?

I hope Murray continues to improve down the stretch.

I'll take Shesterkin 100 times out of 100. No brainer.

I wonder had they known Samsonov would be available, would they have traded for Murray?

Woll has looked great in his limited game actually. He’ll need to stay healthy but I do see him as our backup next year. Samsonov - Woll.
Had Murray played last night there’s a pretty good chance they lose the game or at best it goes to OT.

Granted the Leafs may have defended differently knowing they can’t give up high glove shots.

He was available but not for free until July 1st.
I assumed he would be the number 1 when he was signed.

Woll looks excellent in his AHL/NHL splits this year. Hopefully he can remain healthy moving forward. Would make a lot of sense to have him as the back-up next year, especially considering his AAV.
