Mikko was probably willing to take less than market value to stay the same way MacKinnon was willing to take a discount to stay. That "discount" resulted in a $12.6M AAV and highest paid player in the NHL status when it was signed.

This trade may very will be the thing that costs Cmac's his job.

Kypreos reported earlier that the Avs had offered Rantanen 11,25mil/8years and Rantanen wanted around Mack's number per LeBrun.
So if Cmac traded Mikko and made our team worse because of ~1,5mil that is terrible.

Mikko Rantanen is an elite complimentary piece. If he could play on the 2nd line and drive it consistently and put up 90 points, happily give him 12M+. I do not believe he can do that.

Let's see how long it takes before he is stapled next to Aho instead of driving the 2nd line like Necas was for them.

The number isn't even really relevant anymore, IMO. Whatever it was, it was going to cause the Avs to lose some players, maybe have to trade some players, and forcing us to play a number of AHL caliber players next season, especially if Landy is able to resume his career as well.
