Confirmed with Link: [COL, CAR, CHI] Rantanen-Hall to CAR, Necas-Drury-25 2nd-26 4th to COL, Chi 25 3rd to Chi (Ret 50% on Mikko)

Mikko was probably willing to take less than market value to stay the same way MacKinnon was willing to take a discount to stay. That "discount" resulted in a $12.6M AAV and highest paid player in the NHL status when it was signed.

I don't blame Mikko for wanting what he feels he deserves. Also don't blame the Avs saying no. Miss me with the "Mikko's upset" or "Avs did him dirty" stuff being insinuated.
He'd still be here if he was willing.

You’re right, it doesn’t take much.

You can go cry in the shower away from the media. You don’t need to moan about it for an hour in front of the media.

This is our best player sounding like his boyhood dog just died.

“Yeah, obviously it’s always tough to lose a great player and friend like Mikko, but this is a business and I’m really excited about the guys we’ve added to our lineup.”

Done, that’s it.

Nobody needs to know they spent 20 minutes on the phone crying with each other.
I mean I don't even know what to say.

You watched a 6 minute clip of MacKinnon talking about losing a close friend and teammate. Probably the first and last time he'll address the situation like this. 1 day. 1 media session, 18 hours after the trade.

That turned (for you) into: "sounding like his boyhood dog just died" and "go cry in the shower" and "moan about it for an hour".

Could your explanations I quoted above be any more dramatic. Reading it sounds legit insane.

Oh the irony!

Mack was for a while the highest paid player in the league so what are you talking about? Without covid stalling cap he would make even more money..

Didn't you just make my point in your own post? MacK extended the moment he was able to, he didn't withhold for more. He got paid about what McDavid was, a contract signed 5 years later from McDavid. He could've gotten more. He could've waited closer to the offseason to bump towards 15% like Matthew's did.

Tkachuk and Stone at $9.5 are the highest paid wingers to win a cup. Everyone else is a C or D above that threshold. Avs clearly had a lot to consider in what Rantanen was worth, but he knew he wanted as much as he could and it was higher than the Avs would go. The last time that happened to the Avs was O'Reilly, this core never really knew ROR. So now they've gotten their own dose of what happens when you want more than the team will give you.

Mack and Landeskog certainly knew ROR.

Might have to start watching the Canes now. Just haven't been able to stomach getting into Detroit blah.

It's a bitch being in EST and watching the Avs some times.
