Big skill guys take longer to develop. I'd give him a couple more seasons before we say he is what he is. I'd have nightmares if we traded him only to become a Todd Bertuzzi type player.

He was awful tonight completely disengaged

Yup, agreed. And it's not even just the whole not using his speed and slowing down when he gets the puck and never going to the net with it thing that is the worst. The worst is in transition he gets the puck and stops moving his feet and almost always defers back to the D with lazy half strength passes.

It's like his head is somewhere else, someone a little while ago said he had some off-ice issues going on, which would not surprise me in the least.

I heard that too, my old man said he was told that. Can't say if it was true of course but I hope he isn't faring really badly. Guy's a good kid and a GREAT hockey player when he's even keeled.

Yandle was battling with a Sabres forward for the puck in the 3rd, Kreider came over and poked it away to another Sabres forward and they almost scored. Sums up his season nicely.

The great irony is that despite the frustration and maddening inconsistency - he's only slightly below his (brief) career NHL averages and 20 goals and 40 points isn't a far fetched notion.

The big things are consistency and being a force when the points aren't coming, and whether or not he is what he is or has another notch he can reach.

He seems to get worse at this every year though.

As the thread title says Kreider needs to "do stuff". He has all the tools to be a noticeable player when he's not scoring. He could be a force as a backchecker if he didn't slow down to the pace of the game. You're faster than everyone, be faster. He's been completely neutered in the physical game when he's one of the strongest guys on the ice. He needs to do what JT Miller did and try to be noticeable each shift and the goals will come. The floating and moping around on the ice is not helping him. I hate to say it but you can see why Torts was so hard on him, this was the kind of player he feared he would be.

Are you saying his play degraded from his rookie year to his sophomore year?

The point made was "he gets worse at every year with his play away from the puck". He was a straight bull for some stretch of his first season. He started really strong his next year, tried to kill Brodin, then played soft the rest of the year. This year he's been softer than butter from opening night.

The counterpoint being I think the got better not worse form year 1 to year 2. Which makes his slide only form year 2 to year 3. Completely reasonable from a kid his age.

Out of curiosity ....how many of them kids were or got a big raise after having them slides ? Did management sign them long term and for more bucks ? Any specific examples True Blue that you are comparing him with ?

Damn, I hadn't thought about it but you're right.

Tbh, it's the play of kreider and Nash and Stepan every year since 13-14 that has convinced me AV needs to go. I think all three of those players have declined steadily since that season in their assertiveness on the ice. This team has so much talent, but no will to be the best.

Miller is two years younger than Kreider. Christopher doesn't seem to get it. These people fall in love with these players.

He is 24 years old. For the love of god. Justin Williams. Wayne Simmonds. Comparable players to Kreider. Patience. FFS

"These people " you included. Remember your "free kreider" avatar? Now it's Miller.

Not too long ago most wanted Miller gone. Fans of this franchise criticize the "cup now " Mentality yet they have little patience and demand their top prospects develop overnight.

Kreider was drafted 19th overall... he's having a down year. He's 24.

Saved this team in postseason 2-3 postseason in a row...

Kreider has a shorter leash than Miller because of his experience and age. Next year he really needs to start demonstrating some consistency. I'm always preaching patience with guys, but at some point, if a guy doesn't take a step forward, you have to accept that he is what he is. What Kreider is is still valuable, but he should really be a lot more.

Basically my thoughts exactly on him.

Set backs happen. There is a human element. I agree with you that with the work he put in and the progress he showed he should be more. But I feel like so many people are not understanding for normal struggles when it isn't them. 24 is really young. No one has it figured out at 24.

kreider is having a horrendous year. i think we can all agree on that. Hes still 5th on the team in goals, and still has outscored Hayes.

kreiders having a down year...but quite a few players are having down years. i think part of it is the coach, part of it is the player, and part of it is just sheer luck.

Sure, but Hayes is a 2nd year player. Sophomore slumps happen. Kreider looked like he was building off of the last two years and fell very flat this season. It's worrisome. I'd also go as far as to say his struggles have hurt the production of other guys on the team. Most notably Derek Stepan.

Coach and luck are ******** excuses at this point, so that just leaves the player.

Well the coaching part is debatable, but luck? It would be one thing if he was having a Christopher Higgins-esque seasons, where he was playing well each night but nothing would go in. That hasn't really been the case though. He's not engaged a lot of nights--I don't know how that could be chalked up to bad luck.
