Confirmed Trade: [CHI/PIT] Sam Lafferty for Alex Nylander

I am really confused for why Chicago did this. Lafferty stinks, he has 3 goals in his last 90 games and does nothing except for throw hits and take stupid penalties.

This seems like Chicago giving up a scratch off lottery ticket for a bag of day old McDonald's from the dumpster.

Hey now...The preservatives keep that day old McDs tastin fresh!

Yes Buffalo screwed up his development but at some point the player, who possesses the tools to play in the NHL needs to dig deep and grab a role at the NHL level. He may receive legitimate opportunity in Pittsburgh but it’s probably not a good fit overall. He needs to go to a team where he’s given legitimate too 6 minutes for a good period of time.

He probably gets one more opportunity after Pittsburgh but that will be it before he’s in Europe to resurrect himself.

Sounds like the same foolishness at the outset of his career where a small, vocal group thought he should be gifted top 6 icetime without showing that he was worthy of it. At some point the player has to put in the work.

FWIW, Aston-Reese is 4th in the league in hits.
When is the last time ZAR dropped the gloves? Or delivered a game changing hit ?
Point is ZAR is now the most physical penguin, you know the guy who got his jaw broke by wilson....and that's a scary thought for pens fans heading into the playoffs.

Pens fan........

I know nothing about Nylander, here's hoping he's good. I think Lafferty has the skill and speed to be a decent player. I never liked his role with the Pens, and was extremely snakebit here. I wouldn't be shocked if he blossomed with the Hawks.

I'm a big Lafferty supporter. Never really got the opportunity in Pit. Blazing speed, hits constantly. Would not be surprised if he started to flourish getting playing time in Chi.

Lafferty takes a lot of stupid penalties. Not like going for a hit he shouldn't have and getting tagged for charging or whatever, but for randomly holding someone 20 feet from the puck.

This is so much like the Gaudette for Highmore trade that it's almost like CHI owed the hockey gods some cosmic karma.

But in all seriousness it sounds like a trade that doesn't make sense to make, but ultimately doesn't register as good or bad a year from now
Except that Highmore is better than Gaudette.

Watching extended highlights Lafferty has stood out a bit for the Penguins, but that's a small sample size.

This board is obsessed with familial connections. The Penguins basically just acquired Fedor Fedorov or Jordan Subban. I haven't seen much to like in Nylander.

He’s almost 27 years old. I know no one will ever want to give up on turd players in Pittsburgh because Erod turned it around, but Laff is a depth player you sprinkle in only if there is a Covid outbreak on the big club.

Lafferty skates like he was shot out of a canon. When he plays the odd game, he immediately catches your eye due to his speed. He can fly. He hits as well. Game awareness is lacking and not much production, however.

... jesus lol. strong analogy to really drive home the point eh?

Where does this remark come from? Not saying it's not something that happened, but I had just never heard of that.

A player who doesn't participate or play in the defensive end is said to have to be introduced to his own goaltender...meaning he doesn't go deep enough in his own zone to have met the goaltender.

Lafferty always struck me as a pretty big dude with good wheels who was nothing if not a pain in the ass when he played Washington. Maybe Chicago wants more sandpaper. Nylander has more upside but probably not as suited to an energy role if he’s not in a scoring role.

If he played that focused all the time he'd be an awesome bottom six forward.

But he usually just skates in circles really fast until he takes a series of inexplicable penalties.

Like a worse version of Blake Comeau with a hairline to match.

meh this is a good risk. Lafferty is fast as heck, which gives him value. he never flashed the scoring potential they hoped, and he does take dumb penalties, but if a team needs a speedy forechecker he can be that guy... the pens have speed to spare and better options... they needed a roster spot for Malkin.

Nylander is coming off a lost season from a knee injury... he basically has had one real shot in the NHL and looked ok. Chicago was moving in a new direction and not going to give him a shot... if he shows scoring potential in the AHL, great, but if not then we were going to lose Laff for nothing anyhow and nylander isnt a significant contract regardless...

Who knows what will happen, I have not watched Nylander in the AHL - probably most haven't, but those numbers in the AHL are not good for Nylander. Probably demanded a trade and this was Chicago trying to do him right. If his name wasn't Nylander would anyone know him?

With his type of talent Nylander is bound to become a top scorer by next year...

...in NLA.
