Confirmed Trade: [CHI/PIT] Sam Lafferty for Alex Nylander

Ohh well then. I thought this would've been his 6th season.

Ehhh I think something weird happened with them not counting last season since he was injured the whole time. I forget but there is an article on it from the beginning of the season.

Nylander in 2019-20:

65 GP
10 goals (all even strength)
26 points (24 even strength)
10.6% shooting
14 blocks and 29 hits
25/23 Takeaways/Giveaways
in 12 mins TOI

Seems like he missed all of 2020-21 with a knee injury.

What am I missing here? He seems like a guy who probably belongs in the NHL but needs to work through the kinks and find consistency. Lafferty is an AHL plug.
What you're missing is that Nylander is absolutely useless when he's not producing offensively and while there's been some production in that department it's nowhere near enough to justify him having much of any value. Still could be an OK pickup for Pittsburgh, they seem to have a knack for plugging in plugs and getting production out of them.

Nylander as a pending UFA at $875,000 was going to need a qualifying offer of $1,000,000…thus the trade…

Well this is definitely a very confusing decision, I don't quite understand why the Blachkawks would do such trade. Maybe they see potential in Lafferty, I'm no NHL team manager so I wouldn't know! But I sure hope this somehow benefits both teams... Give these young players some more time to grow and new opportunities, maybe they'll exceed our expectations after all.

Love the move for Pittsburgh. Give up nothing for someone that could be a good reclamation project.

I wish the Leafs had done this.

Ive been lowkey hoping Dubas would try his luck with Alex. With the leadership qualities Willy has shown this year, I imagine he could help salvage his brothers career.

Pittsburgh obviously wins this trade, there are 100 other Lafferty type players dying for a 4th line audition. Maybe Alex still has a 3rd line upside.

Nylander doesn't even suck. He's just been injured and given no chance here. Love turning Jokiharju into Sam f***ing Lafferty. Great organizational move. f***ing pricks.
Joki for Nylander was one of the few positive moves Botterill made for Buffalo. Joki looks the part of a legit top-4 guy, though that can be tough to say for sure when he's playing on a borderline bottom-5 team.

he’s the 5th in PK minutes per game of all Pens for arcs…and Pittsburgh is the best PK team…kills more penalty time than Crosby…just saying…oh and Chicago has 27th best PK

He has also only played in 10 games for the Penguins because he stinks and has as many penalty minutes taken as penalty minutes killed.

Over his entire NHL career, he averages 28 seconds a game on the PK. He has a total of 45:22 of PK TOI over his career while he has taken 60 PIM over his career.

Watch Nylander score 20 goals for Pittsburgh because it's Pittsburgh
I don’t think there’s a spot for him this year. Maybe tonight or tomorrow. Pitt has a lot of RFAs and UFAs after this season, so maybe he’s insurance if Pitt doesn’t re-sign Kapanen, Rodrigues, Heinen etc..

Nylander is trash. He was picked 8th overall so it's presumed he still has the chance of being something other than trash. He does not.

He never should have been rushed to the AHL, but his dad ensured that would happen. He needed at least another year in the OHL. While some thought he may have a more transferable game, outside of his shot, he never really had the skill level of his brother.

seems to me Chicago didn't want Nylander anymore and so Pittsburgh just sent them a guy to keep the contracts equal. Also, maybe allows Chicago to try a different guy in an offensive role in the AHL

If the penguins miraculously hit in Nylander, this is a steal, however I have that as a much of a chance as me winning the lottery. This is probably a nothing deal.

But hey, if there’s a place to go for second chances, potentially being beside Crosby or Malkin ain’t a bad place

Never heard of Lafferty but to be fair A Nylander hasnt done much either. hes living off being a 1st round pick ( top 10 if i remember correctly) Maybe he can coast of Sid & Geno and get some points

Nyalnder may end up out of the league soon he seems like a player thats not good enough to be in Top 6 but too skilled to be in the bottom 6 (well plays like a top 6 skilled player)

I’d rather Crosby focus on scoring than PKing…just saying.

Weird argument. Not sure what point you’re trying to make, but I’d make this trade 100 times out of 100 as a Pens fan and I have zero expectations from Nylander. Have fun with Lafferty.

I'm guessing Pittsburgh wanted more skill for their AHL team and Chicago probably wanted a hitter for their taxi squad. I prefer Lafferty myself. Pittsburgh has a wizard named Mike Sullivan as a coach though so any time they acquire a new player there's a disproportionate chance that guy ends up scoring 60+ points for them. Maybe Hextall noticed it and is gonna start acquiring every skilled AHLer and bottom 6er and let Sullivan work his magic on him.

In Laffertys games this year. I though he had a couple good games.

The guy takes too many penaltys. Some of them are just plain bad. Like the type in the offensive zone when your own team has the puck.

Even if Nylander never makes it in the NHL I'm okay with this deal.
