Puck was good distance away despite flubbed shot.

I guess we disagree.
Backes still had the puck when Ritchie squared up for the hit. These kinds of "late" hits where a player dumps a puck then gets hit happen in almost every game. Usually to defensemen. The problem with sticking with that corrupted VCR quality gif of the hit is it doesn't show when Ritchie squared up.

Probably the hack behind the leg and the crosscheck that initiated the entire thing.
Yeah, I get him getting two for that. Seems all he did afterwards was eat a few fists.
IMO, should have been an even up call.

He knows refs can be wrong. But c'mon if you're going to use that defence, you'll surely admit Charas hit on Henrique was a missed call then right? I mean did he even touch the puck there?
I think there is a bit of a difference in team styles too, this boston team seems a bit softer then in years past... after the Ritchie hit no one really seemed to want to go after Ritchie(which to be fair Ritchie is a big boy, and can handle himself well in fights)

Now swap the shoes and the hit on Henrique... I don't think it matters who was out for Anaheim someone was going to go let chara know that isn't going to fly whether it was kesler perry getzlaf manson bieska Ritchie, someone was going to give him a tap, that's just the way Anaheim plays and the mentality of the team. Not saying they were going to have a chance in hell vs chara... but he was def going to get a slash/crosscheck and some very not nice words said his way.

Did you miss all my posts in this thread talking about Chara and Getzlaf? Vision problems: confirmed.
I've been catching up myself and I gotta say it's amusing seeing your faux complimentary "it's okay if Getzlaf was trying to get away" yet you've spent the entire thread railing into him for doing so.

So Ritchie throws a clean hit; Chara responds with a late hit on a different player and starts throwing punches at Getzlaf when he's tied up by the linesman; extremely biased commentator complains and praises both of Chara's dirty plays.

Edit: not that Ritchie and Getzlaf are choir boys, or that Getzlaf would have done well in that fight.
I always thought that Chara and the Bruins have this history of being pissed off when things don't go their way, so this does not surprise me.

A better question is why did Getzlaf instigate Chara after coming back from a really bad injury?....

Getzlaf gave him the nice wack on his leg that blew Chara up, he was looking for a fight and once he got it, he realized he was out of his league. He needs to pick his battles more carefully.

It was intended to be amusing. And apparently it was, then. You are welcome.

i mean it's rather predatory but he executed it clean as a whistle

I agree its a clean hit but it doesn't mean its a safe one as well... the play was over, Backes wasn't expecting to receive it one bit. Now I know Backes should be aware of the play around him, but I doubt he was expecting to get cut here.

The odd thing is Nick Ritchie is a freaking 240 something pound guy who probably didn't even wanted to hit Backes that hard. He actually looked quite surprised afterwards.

I'm all for the physical play in hockey but I think that was just unnecessary.

Getzlaf might not have been thinking about it at the time, or he may simply have felt he was healthy enough.

I can't answer that. I'd really prefer Getzlaf not fight most of the time anyway, because Anaheim is a worse team when he isn't on the ice. There is no getting around that. He's not a guy who shies away from that type of thing though, and that edge to his game is part of what makes him so difficult for opposing teams to play against, so I also can't complain.

For the most part, I think he's usually pretty smart about when he should be fighting. You could debate this one if you want, with his recent history, but in terms of the impact on the game I think he picked the right time for it. Anaheim was winning, and he wanted to stand up for Henrique.

Amusing for the wrong reason, but take your W's however you can get them I guess.

Next time, choose your words more carefully, when you are trying to be sarcastic, so that it doesn't come back to bite you in the rear.
You are welcome, again.
