He is gonna be great behind that steady defence, granted there losing Hamilton. But his numbers in Anaheim were great when their D was loaded. People forget he was really good here for the most part, but I think the pressure was too much. The guy looked scared every interview

I don't really get this. He was better for Toronto when their defense was weaker. We actually had good defense last year and Freddy was bad. There is is very real chance he is finished as a good NHL goalie.

He has been brutal for the last 2 years in Toronto but was great in the regular season the 3 years before that. Hopefully he regains that form with the canes

Price is a mediocre, overpaid goalie who got hot for a couple rounds.

Elite means top-10 goalie in the world.

Vasy is generational.

What does being overpaid have to do with skill level?

You can't convince anyone that Andersen > Price

Ask Leafs or Hurricane fans, they'll agree.

Andersen definitely wouldn't have been my top choice - especially at that price point.
Who would have? Maybe Grubauer just doesn't want to go to Carolina

Also, we don't have the insight whether he was their top choice or their plan E

He got progressively worse as the Leafs D got better. He hasn't been a good goalie for two years. He was tremendous before that, don't get me wrong. He was probably the Leafs MVP for close to two years. But we are now two years separated from that success and he has been bad in the intermediate.

I am very surprised to see him get this kind of contract. It's more expensive than Holtby got last summer and Holtby at least had a cup win on his resume. Fred will have to play very well for this deal to make sense, best of luck to him and the Hurricanes. Thanks for the saves and the memories in Toronto, Freddy.

So the goaltending carosel continues.

I doubt it will turn out well this year. Andersen was pretty terrible the last couple of years, especially in the playoffs.

The Canes probably won't get past the first round this time.

On the flip side of that coin, he also played his best in Toronto in front of terrible D but couldn't put it together this season in front of their best defensive performance to date. Granted, he was dealing with some ongoing injuries.

Wish him the best, hopefully he can turn it back around.

a 4.5 million dollar rebound when you gave up on a young guy that couldntt be more reasonable for his ask that was performing and growing? hahahha I see tarheel trying hard to defend this already, wonder where TheRillestPaulFenton is

I wouldn’t say Freddie has been terrible but he is one of those goalies that typically finds his groove mid-season, then plays dominant. For that reason, I wouldn’t even factor his performance last season into his overall body of work—he couldn’t string together enough healthy games to play up to his capability.

Carolina will give him the reigns and as along as he stays healthy he’ll be one of the best goalies next season in front of their stout D. Book it.

It’s not a matter of defending the move. It is what it is, a risk that one (or both) of Andersen/Raanta turns out to be better than Mrazek/Ned at a lower cost.

The only way to know how it plays out is to wait and see. Not one of these guys is a sure bet to be a reliable starter for the next two years. We’ll see how it goes and that will determine whether the gamble was worth it or not.

If it weren't for his lack of clutch goaltending and tendency to let in soft goals, the Leafs would've likely made it out of the first round at least once by now.

That's some statement considering the lack of scoring from Toronto in those games. 6 goals in 4 decisive matches the last 4 seasons, but thats besides the point right? It went so much better with Campbell in goal this season.

I think the city beat him down, he was finished here but I think a fresh start with less pressure is gonna help him.

I don't doubt he'll be fine in the regular season.

But he has always been a post-season disaster.

Freddie is better than any goalie Carolina has had for a long time. I also don’t buy the ‘Freddie cracks under pressure’ rhetoric. He has spent the last few years in Toronto after all. That whole team cracks under pressure.

He earned his nickname the old fashioned way, he worked for it

"Fredlight"
