Dillon is the replacement for preretirement Orpik. He belongs to the third pair. You cannot compare Dillon to prime Orpik. There are light years between them.

Dillon is a quality top 4 defenseman with a physical game the brings the pain where playing like Brooks Orpik is becoming a hard to find d game. The Capitals bring the pain. That is the kind of team that MacLellan has built. I have suggested that the Caps should look for a player like Brodin who is more of what today's game brings but I certainly saw plenty of quality from Dillon starting with punching Malkin in the face.

Part of playoff series hockey is creating fear in the opposition. You didnt stand in front of Holtby or dig for rebounds with Brooks Orpik there unless you were willing to get hurt. Dillon hurts people. Kempny, for instance, creates no fear. He brings no pain.
Yeah i get that, and by all accounts, he's well liked by his teammates and everything. I think he's a fine defender, just not sure if that's worth a contract extension, especially with the coaching change and Dillon likely to slow down. That type of defender doesn't exactly age well.

Siege, Fehervary, Jensen and Dillon are all bottom3 zero offense guys. There are no more than two places for such guys in the line-up. Fehervary is lock. Only one place left for a PK specialist Sieg or a PK specialist Dillon or a PK specialist Jensen.

I would prefer Brodin or somebody along those lines, but I have nothing against Dillon. Lets keep in mind that MacLellan has built a hockey team to play a certain style. Dillon plays that style. I feel like MacLellan thought they lost something critical when Orpik retired. I would think to pretty unlikely that Leonsis will hire a coach that doesnt buy into the general team identity.

How can you get something from Siege? He is a zero. Combine Dillon and Siegenthaler and you don’t get Kempny. Sounds about right. Dillon is not a top4 D. He never had a top4 role except the last 1.5 seasons then he was on an atrociously disbalanced SJ defense. He was NEVER given an opportunity to play vs best opposing lines and best players. He is not good defensively and he is not good offensively. He was disappointing on Carlson pair and inexistent on Orlovs pair. Dillon is much closer to Lewington and Siegenthaler than he is to Kempny and Jensen. Penalty killer specialist is an ironic way to say he is good at nothing.

Dillon played in the top 4 every season in Dallas and his first year in San Jose, and only was pushed down when they got Paul Martin. The Caps put him out against top lines right off the bat and he held his own, and he played against top lines in Dallas. And are you really saying penalty killing doesn't matter?

I don’t want to pay $3.5M+ for Dillon over the next four years or so. We have scarce cap room and it can be better spent elsewhere. He’s not that good and will only get worse over the life of the deal.

Agreed, I don't con't consider Dillon anything more than a #4 defensemen at best. So a little better than Jensen/Kempny but nothing worth putting yourself in a potentially shitty position for. So if we resign Dillon we should at least get rid of Kempny without taking back cap.

I’d move Kempny and pay Dillon. Team is better for it IMO.

it’s pretty much a no brainer if we can move him.

Dillon doesn't seem worth the money. He's fine, i guess, but does he bring that much more to the table than a Siegenthaler? $4 million for a shot blocker that takes a lot of penalties and scores 15 points is not good in my opinion. Roll with Kempny/Fehervary/Siegenthaler/ and may mix in some AA.
Why would you roll with Kempny? He has become a liability. He isn't worth his salary.

You consider Carlson 1D or 2D. It doesn't change anything. He was with Caps in 2018, he will be with us the next season. The goal is to do as good as we did in 2018: X=18 if you consider Carlson be 2D or X=17 is you consider Carlson be 1D. It change nothing for other players.

Dillon, Jensen and Kempny are close in value. I personally consider Kempny higher than the other two. He is a SC champion. I explained multiple times why Kemply has more value.

X=21.5 is terrible. You improve it to X=19.5 it still does not pass the first round of playoffs. We have to do much better.

You say resign Dillon. but at what price? This is the question.
I think Kempny has less value than Dillon or Jensen. I'd take Dillon over both of them, I'm not a Jensen fan but I think he has more value than Kempny.

I feel like a cup winner needs 2 rocks on D. Solid. Thick. Eats a puck on the PK and doesn't have to pause to show pain or feign injury, to clear it. 1 right side and 1 left to handle which ever wing the opposition stud patrols.

Carlson is more offensive than defensive and is our top rock but is needed on the PP. Gudas didn't really pan out but is cut from the mold needed. Siggy is a few years away but hopefully absorbed a lot watching Orpik. Orlov and Jensen can shake and bake but aren't your shutdown end of game rock star types. Fever and a healthy Kemps are movers. Dillon is intriguing maybe a bit gangly but may be the best we have behind Carly. AA is gangly too heck most of our D can stand to add 10 pounds of muscle.

The D below is not cup worthy unless the rest of the league runs out of throwback rocks and the modern day D becomes Ice Capaders writhing on the ice after every shot block.

If you need to trade a D and believe in selling high Jensen is the obvious choice, it’s like when they traded Eminger after he strung his 7 best games together. They’re not getting a first but like 7 months ago he looked like a bad contract now they could get back a pick. And then a month ago reports were Kempny looks great now he’s done and we’re looking for a sucker team?

I think Dillon is going to get paid as it's basically his last big chance to do so. And that contract is going to look very bad in a very short time.

He's solid, for sure. But he didn't really impress enough of to give him that kind of contract. If he stays for cheap, close to Jensen/Kempny salary then sure. If not, move on.

I've skimmed a few pages here...lots of talk about the defense... and yet the Caps have spent the big bucks on the forwards -- and those forwards couldn't score at all, except for Ovi, Kuz, and Oshie.

As for the defense, what you spend is what you get -- I think the Caps' defensemen have generally been ok relative to salary. E.g. Kempny and Jensen have at various times looked overwhelmed, but they're paid like 3rd pairing D-men, and to me they're ok in that role. Carlson has been regressing defensively, there was the injury... but I'm not sure how well he's gonna age... given his contract, that's a concern, but he's not going anywhere. Dillon has been meh to me, I still don't know what to make of him. Orlov performs the best for the buck, trade him and the whole defense corps will suddenly look another step slower and a lot more... impotent.

Anyway, if you're spending (relative) peanuts on defense, the forwards better carry the play. They haven't, IMO that's the problem. But if you're gonna hold on to the Oshie / Backstrom / Ovi / (possibly) Carlson retirement contracts, the only solution is for enough young players to emerge and provide the necessary energy & speed. That's how I see it -- the Caps need to hit the lotto again in the draft, with CMM & Protas, with Vrana maybe getting back on track, etc. Maybe a new coach can work another small miracle...

How comfortable we are with Vrana bouncing back, and elevating his game to the next level?
How about do we like Max Domi?

Should I stop here? :)

Very comfortable. He is what he is. A streaky scorer. Still has his speed and quick release so i don't see why he would start regressing. I also don't know if he has that potential to take the next steps to become an elite player but he's still a very valuable scorer in an otherwise rather slow forward core.

Domi is an RFA who had a terrible year and comes with a lot of issues. I would want to see what kind of contract he wants first but even then i propably wouldn't give up the package needed to acquire him. He could be a good bounce back candidate on a right team but it's a big risk for a team whose window is starting to close.
