He is a hybrid - a tweener. His obvious strong offensive skill set is sadly untapped and instead we have him focusing on D. Despite that I don't think anyone will label him a defensive stalwart. A rock. Sure he is rock solid physically and on a soft ass defense he is one of few that will bring the pain.... albeit only once every 10 games or so.

You know who was a defensive stalwart a rock for us, and is now for Philly. We haven't replaced him, nor Orpik. Goalies need that support short of stealing games.

When I see Orlov on the PK blocking a shot of a league elite and then "cooley" clearing it, or when I see in game 1 period 1 of every playoff round thumping punks on the blue setting the tone making them dump it the rest of the series, he will have graduated to RH/Orpik/Nisky grade rocks. I admit it's slowly becoming a dying art my friend.

My point is you didn’t even have him as a top 6 with your “lineup”. You had 6 other guys, and no Orlov. Maybe that was on purpose? Or was it an oversight.

no Orlov.

So....regardless of what we are calling players. DO would be playing over anyone not named Carlson

Jake Allen for a 3rd rounder would have been totally fine by me, I'd be much more comfortable with Samsonov/Allen than the current Samsonov/Vanecek duo. But nevertheless, I'm curious if they do end up riding with Samsonov/Vanecek. If they do, I'm guessing Samsonov's injury wasn't that serious?

Oops oversight, perhaps! He is a top 4 but again not a rock I ttink we need.

You know his cap hit is right around $4.5 million right? Tons of other cheaper options, Jimmy Howard and Corey Crawford intrigue me as less than $2 million back ups

Vanecek deserves first crack at backup, as he has worked his ass off for years in Hershey and is probably the only realistic & cheap option we could grab - we already have him - with starter potential.

I suspect they do sign a veteran to at least compete with Samsonov, particularly after injuring himself carelessly. Maybe someone like Talbot for around $3M on a very short-term deal. The math suggests they'll have around $6.5M total for that spot and a defender (perhaps Dillon) barring clearing out more space. They could instead invest a heavier portion of that on a higher quality defender but I doubt they're going to want to signal an heir apparent situation. They're going to want Samsonov to have to prove it IMO.

They might should have traded Backstrom last off season and Ovechkin this off season. Hell, they might should have let Oshie walk.

Win a championship and then blow your team up. It worked for the Florida Marlins
We did it with Orpik, he was traded and then brought back. Holtby is not Backstrom and both of them are not Ovechkin. it's been years Backstrom has not played with Ovechkin on the same line. Ovechkin does not need him. It is not like someone didn't asked to trade Kuznetsov multiple time. We are SC champions because of Kuznetsov and Ovechkin, not Backstrom. Going back to Holtby. Why should we bring other players to the discussion, huh? It was a wrong decision to keep Holtby. It was clear from the beginning.

Hey, remember that powerplay thing? Ridiculous.

Giving no credit to Backstrom and his one hand during the playoff run is stupid too.

We had a one leg Carlson during these playoffs, '-11', what a performance! I cannot decide who was a greater factor: One leg Carlson in 2020 or one hand Backstrom in 2018. Ovechkin and Kuznetsov have done more for this team than anyone else have ever done. They won the only SC we have.

You’re choosing not to see the difference on purpose.

And actually, Lars Eller won them the Stanley Cup, if you want to strip a whole team’s accomplishments away and cherry pick at contributions.

Lars Eller failed to lose it. As did Backstrom with his seasonal playoff injury.

*Scorching hot take alert!*

For the folks keeping track at home that need to keep up:
1) Lars Eller sucks and is ECHL caliber
2) Jonas Siegenthaler is an ECHL player
3) Kuznetsov and Ovehckin are the best PKers on the team
4) Nick Backstrom's 23 points in 20 games during the SC run is equivalent to John Carlson going -11 while the Caps flame out in the first round
5) The front office ruined Ovechkin's chances at an early SC, not because they couldn't field a competitive defense, but because they "wasted" 1st round draft picks.
6) Clearly you need to devise a formula to build a SC winning defense!
7) Nic Dowd is better at ES than Connor McDavid
8) Travis Boyd is better than Nick Backstrom

And that's only what I can think of off the top of my head

You forgot the best one, Nic Dowd is more effective than Connor McDavid at ES
