Backstrom played with Ovechkin year ago, not Vrana.

Oshie scored 2 goals in Game 1, both on the PP. 0 ES points in the series.

wait....I thought Backstrom didnt play with Ovechkin anymore and is a reason why he is expendable.

This is assuming JR hockey has a season. He might have to play elsewhere to get ice time.
Very good point. If WHL/OHL/QMJHL seasons are canned next year, is there a reason a player couldn’t go to the AHL (assuming that they have a season, of course)? Would it be NHL v Europe/Russia?

Unless there is some kind of amended agreement in place, the CHL and AHL have an agreement that any player drafted out of the CHL can't play in the AHL until they are 20. There's a date that their birthday has to fall before and McMichael barely misses that date IIRC. So it's basically NHL or Europe, like you said.

Only time CHL players can play in the AHL when they are under 20 is once their CHL season is over. They can sign an ATO to join an AHL team for the remainder of the season or the Calder Cup playoffs

Of all the takes I think the “Panik is a top 6 forward” is the funniest one.

It’s funnier to me than the Backstrom/Holtby sacrilege, the Boyd/Dowd top NHL centers thing, etc. Because Panik literally got to play top 6 minutes in Arizona and he was just as inconsistent.

4 NHL teams and 3 AHL teams have decided that Panik is nothing more than a streaky third line winger, but Francais has got them all beat in scouting.

I think the thing with the Panik take is it is kind of is an extrapolation of all these take issue, it’s void of context and actual vision. If you read Panik’s stat lines in a vacuum you might arrive at the belief that he has significant offensive upside and if paired with other top line wingers would be conceivably a 50-60 point winger... but if you watched him play you’d see that he’s simply not an impact player. He welts under pressure, loses his hands on too many opportunities, is streaky, creates very little for his line mates, etc. His style doesn’t work in a top 6 capacity, it barely works on the third line.

It’s the same issue as the Boyd vs McDavid thing. Get lost in the numbers and you’ll arrive in some dumb places, watch the games and you’ll see things that are obvious and lost on the stat sheet

I think more (young) euro players will go back to their countries to play some hockey before next nhl/ahl season

I love that some of our top young prospects are going to get some time in Europe before our season starts. They’ve been out a while and will be full throttle come TC.

The CHL will almost certainly have a season. Things are much more under control in Canada than they are in the US. International players (including those from the US) may be screwed if they’re not already in Canada, though.
The USHL and NCAA hockey seasons are much more in doubt, as are the US-based CHL teams like Plymouth and Everette.

I believe the QMJHL already started their pre-season a few days ago, with actual fans in attendance. The OHL and WHL are slated later in the year, as expected since I think those leagues have American teams.

Edit: QMJHL official opening day Oct 1 (their normal day)

OHL & WHL tentatively scheduled Dec 1

ECHL & AHL tentatively scheduled Dec 4

NHL tentatively scheduled Dec 1, although there is growing consent that the date is too ambitious

Good long read on what NHL and AHL execs thinks and where things stand:

What we're hearing about the 2020-21 NHL season

The NHL and NHL Players' Association tentatively agreed to a Dec. 1 start date for 2020-21, with training camps beginning on Nov. 17. But privately, team executives believe that's too ambitious. The further the NHL pushes back the start date, the less likely a full schedule is. Awarding a Stanley Cup in September or October isn't going to be a regular occurrence.
As one high-ranking team business executive told ESPN bluntly: "We all realize an 82-game schedule for next season is a pipe dream. It's just not going to happen."

One NHL executive told ESPN he anticipated a season of around 60 to 65 games, beginning in mid-to-late January. Another NHL team executive believed 70 games would be the baseline for next season, because that's a number typically used as a minimum for regional TV contracts -- although that number was "more of a guidepost" than a mandatory minimum.

Aaron Teats, the Anaheim Ducks' president of business operations, believes the situation remains fluid. "It's been made abundantly clear by Gary and the league that there has to be a high degree of flexibility here," Teats said. "There is a tentative Dec. 1 date, but there is also the desire to play in front of as many fans as possible. We are all hopeful that can be full buildings."

Reports indicate that Vince Dunn may be available. The Caps should be all over that. He’s a really good Dman that was a bit underutilized in STL. He is an upcoming RFA and evolving wild projects his salary at 2.56 mil per year for 2 years.

Here’s an article that goes over some of his advanced stats as well:

Montreal Canadiens Offseason Target: Vince Dunn - Last Word on Hockey

He would add a lot of mobility to the back end and is good on both sides of the puck.

He’d slot in behind Orlov and Kempny/Dillon, and longer term compete with Fehervery and Alexeyev for ice time. Surely a guy who slots in on the right makes more sense?

He would replace Kempny/Dillon.

Dunn-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
Siegenthaler-Fehrevary

Gives you the option to move Orlov once Fehrevary/Alexeyev are fully ready, whether it be for cap reasons or a decline in play as he gets older.

What kind of a winger could we conceivably get with our 1st round pick this year? I think adding some on the RW who can rotate with Oshie on the second and third lines and give us three lines that can really score would be a huge boost.

Best wingers of the World will score nothing on our third line with Lars The Disastous at its center.
