Of all the takes I think the “Panik is a top 6 forward” is the funniest one.
It’s funnier to me than the Backstrom/Holtby sacrilege, the Boyd/Dowd top NHL centers thing, etc. Because Panik literally got to play top 6 minutes in Arizona and he was just as inconsistent.
4 NHL teams and 3 AHL teams have decided that Panik is nothing more than a streaky third line winger, but Francais has got them all beat in scouting.
I think the thing with the Panik take is it is kind of is an extrapolation of all these take issue, it’s void of context and actual vision. If you read Panik’s stat lines in a vacuum you might arrive at the belief that he has significant offensive upside and if paired with other top line wingers would be conceivably a 50-60 point winger... but if you watched him play you’d see that he’s simply not an impact player. He welts under pressure, loses his hands on too many opportunities, is streaky, creates very little for his line mates, etc. His style doesn’t work in a top 6 capacity, it barely works on the third line.
It’s the same issue as the Boyd vs McDavid thing. Get lost in the numbers and you’ll arrive in some dumb places, watch the games and you’ll see things that are obvious and lost on the stat sheet
