Does he think by removing Capfriendly the rest of the league only gets info from that site and are now screwed

What a f****** loser....

I mean I'm sure some teams use it - it's a nice quick resource. Certainly they do - in fact we have proof that some managers use it during the deadline while on the go and have it open on their laptops while on the phone with other GM's etc.

But that doesn't mean they don't have other programs. And again - even if they didn't currently - it wouldn't be challenging to create them. It would be basically a 200k investment over 3-4 months, and given that timeline for CF going dark is after the draft the competitive advantage doesn't even buy the caps a draft or a trade deadline.

😂

Basically they just paid to become the league's most hated franchise.

I gotta love how the Capitals are probably the biggest pieces of shit in the NHL when they do crap like this and partner with sportsbooks like Ceasars. Its absolutely scummy. I'm glad that stupid DC proposal got shot down btw. What an annoying and sad day for the common hockey fan. But hey, at least it can help the Capitals be a somewhat more mediocre piece of crap team I guess. Maybe Leonis can also cheapen up and give the Islanders Leonard because ya gave us Trotz, cheap bastards.

as good as capfriendly is the nhl should have bought him out to maintain the resource. there are only so many people using a specialized database like that and the revenue stream potential is pretty finite so i am happy the site developer got to cash out. i have a good friend who maintains an industry specific data tracking website. he'd love to be bought out.

hopefully someone is furiously scraping capfriendly as we speak preparing the next site.

It'll probably take 6 months or so and there's another Capgeek/Capfriendly-website up and running because that type of site will generate unique and reoccuring visits and in turn ad revenue.

What's the point in doing this? All it's doing is pissing off hockey fans

All teams use it too. In fact they pay capfriendly.com to use it. Leafs had a full sheet of capfriendly numbers printed out and pasted on a wall in the Amazon series.

Ottawa has been shown using it.

They're taking a resource that everyone uses and bringing it in house. I guess they think they're gaining some kind of competitive advantage from it?

Just hire a cap specialist.

Why shut it down? Just don't allow other teams to buy specific data. Just an asshole move.

The Caps probably would like to have one for their internal use and this is the easiest way to accomplish it. Ofc, when the next site pops up then some other team will purchase that and so forth.

Someone is bound to to scrape and rebuild it in their own image. You can see the GapGeek influence in CapFriendly.
That's not anywhere near enough. The problem isn't one of managing and massaging the data. That's straightforward. The problem also isn't the calculators and the like. That's also doable, though it takes more work and the ability to read CBAs.

The real problem - and the reason why the Capitals are a bunch of ratf*** asshole dipshits for doing this - is keeping that information up to date. Because there's still a lot of NHL teams that don't publish their contract info. To get it, you have to build a contact network with various sports agencies, team personnel, and et cetera to be able to get it. Creating a replacement isn't just about making the existing info available - the big thing they provide that nobody else does is that they get quick updates for everybody.

But now that it's Caps-specific - i.e. no longer neutral, and every other team has been f***ed over - that element, by far the one thing that is not readily replacable by any third party - is going to become completely useless, because instead of helping out yourselves and fans and okay yeah there's also the competition but whatever, now it's just Helping The Washington Capitals. And it suddenly becomes that much easier to tell those existing contacts to f*** off and die.

This is the sort of just-because-f***-you move that should lead to a franchise being terminated. If this is how they do business, the Capitals deserve to die as an organization, and every single one of their fans should be deeply ashamed to be in any way associated with these people. They just pissed off a fair portion of the hockey world as a whole, and their excuse for doing it is bullshit because they destroy the thing's value just by virtue of having purchased it and therefore being the sole controlling entity.

I get other teams use it but everyone has access to all this info if they want to get it. Capfriendly was just an easy option but what a F U to the fans of the league

God, I sure hope so.

All the information on it is pretty awesome, including of course, G.M. mode.

Yeah, congratulations to the developer, he probably got his retirement money from it.
