Is this team really better though? This is just shiny new toy syndrome. They got better because Myers is better than the other crappy RS guys like Gudbranson.

Just because he's better than crap doesn't mean he isn't crap too.

It's also typical of this place to defend anything benning does
More like its typical to find flaw in everything like making deals is just buying the best looking produce vs having to make concessions and 2 sides happy.
Myers can eat top4 minutes be a plus11 and put up 30pts in Wpg playing with the worst QOT of the top4 minute guys. His 30pts plus Hughes 35-50pts plus Benn who is actually pretty reliable makes a big change to Gudbranson Pouliot MDZ and that train wreck.
Not only that Miller Pearson Leivo and an improved Gaudette with Sutter and Baertschi healthy could give us a huge push in scoring depth plus some guys that are heavy and can win battles along the walls.
Im actually fairly excited but still somwhat cautious

Well I was gonna ask to also control for deals for [impending] UFAs too but I also felt I shouldn't have had to. The point is that Myers isn't outside of the bell curve on pay vs. contribution.

What do you think his contribution is?

This can’t be stated enough.

Spending huge money on a UFA doesn’t make the team better if he isn’t actually better than Hutton and Biega.

And the ‘you guys just hate it cos Benning did it’ argument is pathetic considering we’ve been talking about how overrated this player is for months.
Its the Brendan Gaunce argument 2.0. How did that go?

Maybe. Garrison was better no doubt, but far superior? I don't think so.

Just comparing their seasons before they signed with the canucks, Myers actually outscored Garrison at ES. Myers gets a couple minutes less icetime per game but the Jets also have a much better d core than the 11-12 florida panthers.

Brian campbell, Jason Garrison, Dmitri Kulikov, Mike Weaver, 35 year old Jovo, Keaton Ellerby, sophomore Erik Gudbranson

vs. myers who has Byfuglien and Trouba ahead of him on the right side?
I see them as being comparable in terms of offensive production (Myers is better at it overall-- Garrison mostly just relied on his heavy shot), but defensively, it isn't close, in my opinion.

Despite some shortcomings and gaffes regularly resulting from his below average skating ability, for the most part, Garrison was solid, reliable, and smart defensively-- Not ideal in a shutdown role, but feasible in a pinch. Myers is legitimately poor defensively and needs to be heavily sheltered to not be exposed (much more competent than Gudbranson but still bad).

Given the state of our defense right now, that version of Garrison would actually be a welcome addition and a breath of fresh air-- It would add a lot of much-needed stability to a defense that looks completely lost most of the time. That's not the case with Myers at all.

That is a lot of money for a bottom pairing guy who is a negative posession player.

Other teams have a bad contract or two, we have very few good ones and a bag of bad ones.

He’s not a bottom pairing player. He was only a bottom pairing player in Winnipeg because they had Trouba and Byfuglien on that side. It’s the same reason why J.T Miller was a “3rd line guy” in Tampa: great depth on a great team.

Myers is a 2nd pairing d-man that most respectable hockey pundits (or anyone with a half a brain and without bias) would label as a 3rd pairing or 4th pairing dman? Me personally? I would label him as a “3.75.”

Good shut down on the PK and also excels on the PP. Myers has issues in his own end, but perhaps this can be negated if he’s paired with a solid top pairing dman. Hello Alex Edler.

Its the Brendan Gaunce argument 2.0. How did that go?

Exactly how I thought it would. As much as he should have been a regular the last 3 years, it was very obvious that was never going to happen.

And I’m pretty sure the likes of Tim Schaller weren’t an upgrade on what Gaunce did the year before for less than half the cap hit, so I was right. How the hell do you people not understand this?

Also, is anyone capable of actually framing an argument based on a player’s actual skills and playing ability relative to their salary?

I expected 6.5m for 6 years.
5 years at 6m is not the best deal, but I can live with it.
At least it's not crazy like 7x7
It will improve this team, but we absolutely will regret this deal in the future.

so many fake outrages here trying to get likes.

this is a fair deal for a ufa defenceman.

The unfortunate reality is that many “fans” hate Benning and so they’re going to try and hate on this guy without properly looking at the facts. What are the facts? The facts say that Myers is a 2nd pairing dman with some significant strengths and weaknesses. This guy can move the puck up ice fairly well, and is great on special teams. He also brings a bit of a physical element obviously. He does make some significant defensive gaffes, but perhaps these weaknesses can be nullified. Let’s see how he does with Edler instead of Kulikov, lol.

I do think there should be valid concern, in terms of Myers not being able to live up to contract expectations during his final two years, but I think we should be able to get 3 good years out of Myers.

What do you think his contribution is?
Second pairing, third pairing later in contract.
20+ minutes per night for the next three seasons.
Second unit powerplay time

Actually I am quite curious to see what type of trade protection this contract has.
Same with Benn's.

Yeah, totally, man. Why pay Gaunce $750k to do a job Beagle can do for $3 million?

1) Gaunce isn’t an NHL caliber forward.
2) Beagle is a very good 4th Line Center
3) Beagle is a recent cup winner and has been In Leadership roles throughout much of his career. This influence is important on a team with many young players that are trying to get to the next level.

Having said that, I will admit that Beagle is overpaid. At the time, no one knew what we really had in Elias Pettersson and so the Beagle signing at that time was necessary.

Its the Brendan Gaunce argument 2.0. How did that go?

I should also add that my Gaunce argument went a hell of a lot better than your glowing support for the Eriksson signing, your glowing support for the Gudbranson trade, your glowing support for the Gagner signing, and your glowing support for the Beagle signing.

Why should we believe that you’re right this time on Myers after looking ridiculous every previous offseason for the moves you’ve supported?

6 Million is alright. Myers is arguably the best defenseman on the market. He is being hired to be a 2nd pairing D, and any top 4 D is going to get paid. It's only about 7.5% of the cap hit. That's alright.

The pain from this signing is that we still have Ericsson on an ugly contract. Take that away from the equation and it's not that bad.

Can this stupid shit.

We’ve been talking about Myers here for months and how overrated he was and what a bad signing he would be. Acting like people thought Myers was a great player until Benning signed him is just flat-out dishonest debate.

Why did you argue against your own point? A third pairing player is a bottom pairing player and a 3.75 pairing player is a healthy scratch.

Typo on my part.

I meant 3rd or 4th dman on a 2nd pairing.....just. Like most respectable hockey pundits say. My score of Myers is a 3.75.

Obviously, if Benning makes a stupid signing with Myers, then my opinion will change drastically, but I think he’s been an excellent GM these past few years.

Guess not...

Because some people had requested it here are the cap hits adjusted as if they were signed today for the same cap percentage. Now, real dollar values are much more valuable than adjusted dollar values but this gives some idea of where Myers fits into things in context. He's still probably being overpaid by at least 1 to 1.5 million for what he brings but that's typical for a UFA.
