I like this deal. It's not bad at all. I don't buy the hate on Myers.

Top paring defensemen get like $8-12m in today's NHL. If the old Hamhuis deal was a steal, this is, at minimum, a solid signing considering the relative cap hit at the time of signing and the anticipated contribution to the team. This is second-pairing money even now, and third pairing later on, which are exactly the minutes Myers will be playing. Winnipeg was a contender with him playing the same types of minutes he'll be playing in Vancouver. Bottom-pairing players don't get 30+ points and finish with a plus rating. Posters here are functionally suggesting that Myers isn't an upgrade over Biega or Gudbranson - two true bottom pairing options the Canucks have deployed the past few seasons to everyone's chagrin.

Looking at how this compares to the defence from last year, Hughes and Myers are objective upgrades over Hutton and Gudbranson going into this season. I think Myers is stepping into a good situation. He will probably be playing with Hughes or Edler - two different, but enticing options. I also heard on the radio that that the Canucks are bringing in Jordie Benn as another look. I understand Benn looked good in Montreal this year. All look at least better than Kulikov who I understand was Myers' most common partner in Winnipeg this season.

This contract brings him more or less to the same age Edler will be when his is complete. With Edler's signing - for the same price, in his twilight years - being celebrated as a good deal, I don't see how this one isn't. I would suggest these two players have had similar peaks and dips in their careers, but neither appear to be totally broken down yet. I think Myers has more to give in Vancouver than he did in Winnipeg and Buffalo, too; those are a horrible couple of cities to be stuck playing in. Imagine being traded out of Buffalo and it's to Winnipeg.

Not the greatest deal in the world, but I definitely understand Benning’s thought process on this given the teams’ needs and where we are as an organization. I think we will get 3-4 good years out of Myers before he smokes some bone either in the last year or the last two years.

Myers is by no means a long term solution to our RD woes, but he will help keep the boat afloat as the Canucks (inevitably?) move on from Tanev while stocking the cupboards on that right side.

The worst kept secret in all of professional history has been revealed. “Omg, the Canucks signed Myers!”

Dan Hamhuis was the #1 defender on one of the best post lockout teams of all time, stopped reading there.
You are understating the contributions of Edler, Ehrhoff, and Bieksa on those teams.
That was a committee defense. Hamhuis was not a cut above the rest, even at his prime, relative to the primes of his peers in that group and especially during the best Canucks' years. There is a reason he was the de facto third best defenseman on Nashville - he had blemishes.

Regardless, Myers' contract cap hit based on percentage of the salary cap is 7.36% and Hamhuis' cap hit based on percentage of the cap hit at the time of signing was 7.58%, so although Hamhuis was a better player, Myers is still coming in a shade cheaper. Like I said, if we are using Hamhuis as a gold standard for great July 1st signings, Myers doesn't look bad like some are saying. Myers' deal looks very reasonable by almost every metric. Likewise, if the Canucks had signed Hamhuis for $5m-$5-5.5m at the time like Pittsburgh and Toronto apparently offered upon trading for his rights, it still would have been a good contract.

Lol at all the people upset were making the team better.
Only certain players are available and it looks like we just pulled some really good guys to add to the group on and off the ice.
Myers just got the Garrison contract and he's a top4 righty.
Oh well typical of this place.

Is this team really better though? This is just shiny new toy syndrome. They got better because Myers is better than the other crappy RS guys like Gudbranson.

Just because he's better than crap doesn't mean he isn't crap too.

It's also typical of this place to defend anything benning does

Just because their contracts are similar doesn’t mean they’re even close to the same player.

Myers was a #4/5 on a team that lost in the first round, Hamhuis was the best team in the NHL’s best all situations defender.

It’s like comparing Myers to someone like Hamphus Lindholm.

This offseason is hilarious from our fanbase...almost embarrassing.

Podkolzin Hoglander great picks

Miller or a 16% chance of getting Miller or better.

Myers Hughes and Benn for Pouliot Gudbranson and Del Zotto and it looks like Hutton

Edler 2x6

No terrible contracts....much better looking team. Way to go Benning

You obviously haven't seen Myers play.

Trade all 1st rounders then?

Oh, and every pick is great when the team makes it.

That about sum it up Sting?

I love how being better than Gudbranson is considered a success. Like this is seriously the bar that Jim Benning has set in half a decade, acquiring anyone who isn't a literal dog turd on skates is a great addition to the team.

Yeah, just did a quick scan through it. Forgot about Seabs. He's on an abnormally bad contract, however.

It's pretty bad when you can only see 1 or 2 guys on that list you'd rather have Myers over.

I'm guessing it would be similar if you went down another salary level or two on the list as well.

This can’t be stated enough.

Spending huge money on a UFA doesn’t make the team better if he isn’t actually better than Hutton and Biega.

And the ‘you guys just hate it cos Benning did it’ argument is pathetic considering we’ve been talking about how overrated this player is for months.
