I like this deal. It's not bad at all. I don't buy the hate on Myers.
Top paring defensemen get like $8-12m in today's NHL. If the old Hamhuis deal was a steal, this is, at minimum, a solid signing considering the relative cap hit at the time of signing and the anticipated contribution to the team. This is second-pairing money even now, and third pairing later on, which are exactly the minutes Myers will be playing. Winnipeg was a contender with him playing the same types of minutes he'll be playing in Vancouver. Bottom-pairing players don't get 30+ points and finish with a plus rating. Posters here are functionally suggesting that Myers isn't an upgrade over Biega or Gudbranson - two true bottom pairing options the Canucks have deployed the past few seasons to everyone's chagrin.
Looking at how this compares to the defence from last year, Hughes and Myers are objective upgrades over Hutton and Gudbranson going into this season. I think Myers is stepping into a good situation. He will probably be playing with Hughes or Edler - two different, but enticing options. I also heard on the radio that that the Canucks are bringing in Jordie Benn as another look. I understand Benn looked good in Montreal this year. All look at least better than Kulikov who I understand was Myers' most common partner in Winnipeg this season.
This contract brings him more or less to the same age Edler will be when his is complete. With Edler's signing - for the same price, in his twilight years - being celebrated as a good deal, I don't see how this one isn't. I would suggest these two players have had similar peaks and dips in their careers, but neither appear to be totally broken down yet. I think Myers has more to give in Vancouver than he did in Winnipeg and Buffalo, too; those are a horrible couple of cities to be stuck playing in. Imagine being traded out of Buffalo and it's to Winnipeg.
