What are the possibilities of resolving the OEL disaster situation? 4 more years at $7.26 million

1 plays out the contract as a bottom pair/extra, maybe trade him later with less assets attached
2 buyout that costs the team on the cap hit for 8 years
3 retain, attach some assets and trade him
4 attach very nice assets and trade him with no retention

Unfortunately, I'm thinking it's going to be #1.

The reasoning on a Miller trade would be that we would take some of the return and turn it into a 2C. For instance, a trade with Carolina where we might get Kotkaniemi + or futures at the draft that we flip for a roster player with a 3rd team.

The other option is that we win the draft lottery and land Bedard or Fantilli. There's your 2C right there :DD
I get it, and in theory I like the idea of cap reallocation (although we have some other areas such as wing and D that need it more), I guess I just don’t trust that our front staff can manage it. A lot of moving pieces required.

I put it at about 70% for "#1" for next year at least. I think he's in the lineup.

Buyout would be 10% for this year - much higher next year.

20% chance you get an announcement that says "OEL won't be playing in 2023-24 due to some sort of injury".

3&4 aren't happening.

Some notes from Drance's latest article in The Athletic.

Whether through buyout or trade — Garland was made available at the NHL draft last summer, with the club seeking a young centre in exchange — the club’s first challenge this offseason will be a demolition project.

Before the Vancouver market can start dreaming on how supporting free agents — such as Vladislav Gavrikov, Teddy Blueger and Ivan Barbashev — might fit in Canucks blue next year, the club will have to make space somehow, in some manner.

"Seeking a young center in exchange' for a freaking middle 6 winger with a term deal near 5mil per.

Management needs to get real in their valuations.

Cap management all starts on June 15 with a buyout of OEL. Takes the pressure off teams trying to fleece the Canucks on deals for wingers.

Every single year we go into the summer talking about how we need to clear cap space in order to improve this team and basically every single summer our management teams fail to do so. Its almost getting to the point of delusion.

"In order to improve our team this summer we just have to do this thing that we've tried and failed to do every summer."

Drance is so shit now

Calgary isn't selling low on him
And they won’t sell to us lol

Juulsen:
-will become an UFA; Canucks like the player a lot; implying that the change in contract status changed extension negotiations

Pettersson Extension:
-can start talking about an extension on July 1st
-other agents he talked to suggested the following contract scenarions 3y/9m, 4y/10...most think that 5 years and 10m is fair
-as long as the want and desire is there between the player, agent, and team that a contract will get done
-Pettersson's agent, JP Barry, told previous management that they want to do a long-term deal but Canucks didn't have the cap space
-Dhaliwal says that if they don't get him signed this summer and have another slow start, Pettersson will Tkachuk his way out of the organization
-Canucks players are sick and tired of seeing new coaches; want stability

Cap Space:
-can do it with buyouts or attach a sweatener to a bad contract
-Holtby, Virtanen, Ferland, and Luongo are all coming off the books so ownership is finally getting some relief
-buyouts are all about the owner
-got to have a good owner willing to buy people out
-hearing more and more that buyouts are not the number one option
-things change, though
-doesn't think buyouts are going to be the number one perogative
-Canucks have traded so many 1sts & 2nds so doesn't see how they are in a position to attach draft picks to move contracts
-"if the Canucks were smart, they would play OEL for two more years then do the buyout" (Sekeres immediately disagrees and wants OEL bought-out right now)

Pearson and Poolman:
-won't know on Pearson for a while
-Poolman really wants to play next year and doesn't want to retire; has concussion and whiplash issues; has seen a bunch of doctors

Kravtsov and Dermott:
-questions if the Canucks are going to qualify them

Burroughs:
-haven't talked to his agent yet
-guesses that they think they will bring Luke Schenn back
-doesn't know what's going to happen with him

Bear:
-starting to talk with his agent again

Podkolzin:
-needs a big summer
-doesn't know the status; if he's healthy enough to play in the AHL playoffs

Hoglander and Rathbone:
-we'll see what happens with those two over the course of the summer

Hirose & McWard:
-10 teams interested in Hirose
-6 teams for McWard
-Scott Young played a big role in both signings

I don't get it... Hronek's shown that he could be an all-situations, reliable RD and he was the #1 RD for awhile in Detroit ahead of Seider. We make the trade to get him here and then we rip a player out of the top-6 which creates dead cap for years, without even letting him get a shot with the new acquisition to see if he could get his career back on track? I'm going to take the cautiously optimistic route myself and see if we could at least have a guy who can play 2nd pair, smart hockey and not be expected to be the safety net next to Chaos Giraffe, but rather have another reliable partner to form a safe pairing.

... and the bolded is why they're trying to establish team structure now, playing the absolute balls off him, trying to get him to 100 points, etc.

Literally everything right now depends on making this player happy, getting him to buy in to what the team wants to do, and having him be comfortable signing a long-term contract. Everything else around this team right now pales in comparison.
