Myers, Cole, Joshua, Blue hundred percent coming back, they'll try their best with lindy and zaddy, lafferty and friedman too if they'll take a mil or less.

what a world, we are exploring options to resign Myers!!!

but if this is what the reality of success is I'll all for it, Myers has looked good this past year

To be fair, Myers would be fine to re-sign at 3-3.5M on a 1-2 year deal. The issue with him has always been how grossly overpaid he is. Would he be my first choice? Definitely not. Priority one is seeing if we can get Zadorov locked in to a reasonable enough deal. Then see if we can bring in Tanev. From there, it's a toss up between Cole or Myers. I'd prefer Cole but not at 3M given his age.

I don't think we should spend too much on defense though. Juulsen has shown he deserves a full time role. So I'd bring back Friedman as the 7th and let either Cole or Myers walk.

let cole and myers walk. friedman could stay or leave. depending on who they target via the trade route. not alot of f.a defense options for this year.

I still don't understand the love and committment to wanting to bring Zadorov back. He's basically Tyler Myers in that he's a guy that looks good in a prescribed, limited role, but cannot really be played/trusted as a full-time top-four guy. Also similar to Myers, prone to brain cramps.

Yes, on a very reasonable deal I would re-sign him. But that "reasonable deal" is simply not a realistic possibility given his UFA status, the price he can command on the open market, and that this is his one shot at a big payday.

I'd basically agree, though he's been playing equal minutes to Soucy recently, and has averaged not far off through the season. It basically comes down to whether you believe he's a second-pair guy, and should be paid like one, or if he's a fixture on the bottom pair left side, and shouldn't be paid more than that.

With Hughes-Soucy down the left, you aren't really in a pinch, and shouldn't be in a rush to give Zadorov second-pair money he wants to anchor the bottom pair. Given he's pretty close in age to Soucy, you'd really have to think Zadorov is your long-term second-pair left-side guy to justify signing him.

I'd think from a roster perspective, it would make more sense to let Zadorov walk and spend that money on a right-side defenseman (ie. hopefully an upgrade on Myers).

Mhmm. Minutes have ticked up recently, but historically more of a 4/5 role. And I agree, with Soucy on the left and solidifying himself as a key cog in the blueline, I find it hard to justify the investment in Zadorov.

Of course, there is a price I'd still bring him back, as quality depth is nice. But it would have to be haircut on his AAV and a max of 3 years, or something like $4M x 2 years (and again, I agree there that re-allocating that cap space somewhere else in the lineup would be more efficient). But that type of deal is 100% not going to happen. With looming UFA status, Z will easily be looking to get $4+M with longer term than I would want to go.

The only issue I'd see, is that having Soucy/Zadorov allows you play them both 16-18 minutes per night, which has historically been the sweet spot for both players. Soucy has also tended to struggle when moved up line-up. He's been at his best at that ~17 minutes per game mark.

That said, it is going to be hard to fit both at somewhere around a combined ~$8M AAV unless you move off of Hronek and use that cap space to fill out the right side. Soucy is paid more like a bottom-pairing guy, but if Zadorov wants close to $5M AAV on term, it's just too expensive.

Yeah, that was one of my concerns with Soucy at the time of his signing as well. He's also typically been a 4/5 guy than a true top-four player.

I know some people have recently started disliking Ian Cole, but I would happily bring him back to be that 4/5 guy on the left side, and keep Soucy's minutes in check. He'd probably come back on another 1 year deal at a similar (or even slightly cheaper) cap hit. Being primarily on the 3rd pair is a better spot for him too.

Hughes - Hronek
Soucy - _______
Cole - Juulsen
________

The above leaves a nice chunk of cap space to upgrade the RD2 spot.

I'm fine with this, but I also think Juulsen is better suited as a #7 dman

Pesce Roy DeMelo Tanev Haakanpaa Walker Dumba Carrier are all UFA options that have played 18 minutes plus this year

Adam Larsson is going into his last year in Seattle maybe you can do something there if he isn't re signing

Colton Parayko in STL. 4 yrs younger for 6.5 vs paying north of 4 million for Tyler Myers.

David Savard in MTL has been rumoured on the block

Point being is there are options. We dont have to kiss Myers ass or pay him market value because then we might as well go to market and find a better defenseman that isnt gonna be 35

I was discussing Myers as an option in the context that he may willing to sign a 1 year contract to the highest bidder much like Cole has. As such, he presents as a "attractive" option.

I'm not saying pay Myers what he wants. I think those proposing a $3Mx2 years is more in line with the max but 1x$4M may be more attractive than 2x$3M.

Again, I'm all for an upgrade if we can swing it, but consider the options and acquisition costs. Would love to bring Tanev and acquire Larsson (which could be realistic). Like some other guys on your list as well but we'll have to pay up in term and money. For example, you mentioned Parayko. He has 6 years left at $6.5M. Ignoring acquisition costs and the fact he has an NTC, given the contract, is that a player you prefer over Myers at 1x$4M?

Our roster is generally lacking size/toughness as it is and our two most physical mid-roster players (Zadorov and Joshua) are pending UFAs. It's a legitimate concern. It's hard to find big/tough players that can play, it's generally expensive to bring them in, and if those guys leave it will be very difficult to replace what they bring.

It’s starting to look like the coaching staff prefer Juulsen over Cole..If everyone is healthy come playoff time,it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Cole sitting it out.
I wouldn't mind seeing them rotate during the playoffs, they both play a pretty taxing style(hits, puck battles, shot blocks) so why not keep them fresh?

I think Zadorov wants a top 4 role so I expect him to walk unless the Canucks basically pay him a UFA premium price. You listen to his interviews and he definitely seems like a guy who wants a 19-20 mins per game type of role. Dhaliwal also mentioned last week that the Canucks could've signed him at a more team friendly deal at the time of the trade, but now he's not so sure, and I think it's because Zadorov at the time probably envisioned himself played a couple of more minutes per game in the Canucks lineup than he has.

This makes signing Joshua pretty important.

Theoretically agree but Zadorov is also a different sort of cat and coming from a situation in Calgary where he wasn't happy to a situation here where he's fit really well and seems happy and has raved about the coaching staff ... it might not be an automatic that he takes an extra $700k or whatever to sign in Anaheim or something.

I don’t mind adding more term to try and bring the cap down for Zadorov. Like $4.0-4.2M x 5 or 6 that’s buyout friendly of course and no trade protection. Nothing about Zadorov suggests he’s going to walk to a bottom feeder team and get paid 500-700k more than the above.

Zadorov is a unicorn type of defenseman. Your not going to find many defenseman with his size, physicality, deterrence while also being exceptionally athletic, quick, and versatile. And if there’s a left handed defenseman in the future that is knocking down the door, Zadorov will still retain his value. He will never not be a commodity barring significant injuries. Zadorov over the last 3 years (since he became of Flame) has been noticeably steady and consistent as a 4B/5th defenseman.

Also, you cannot compare Zadorov to Myers. The only thing remotely similar about them is their large frame, the rest ends there, statistically, eye test, play style, etc suggests this.

Zadorov is actually tough and is not as error prone as Myers.
Zadorov makes us harder to play against and Myers is just a timebomb that blows up occasionally against us or the opponent.

Zadorov is a better player than Myers.

I don’t think we should sign either, and I like Zadorov.
