Oh really...can you link me up? I heard reinhart

This says to me you have no idea who tony Gallagher is and did not follow the Canucks very closely in the gillis era because it's wrong.

Someone's forgetting - Gallagher would have smashed a watermelon on his head before blaming Gillis. He was very connected to that regime, and infact repeatedly referred to fans who chanted z'Fire Gillis!' In the same tone as uneducated baffoons or something alike...

I've said this before but I definitely agree that Virtanen was chosen before Benning was hired. However that doesn't let him off the hook. I think he was hired in part because he was the kind of guy who would take Virtanen there. Wouldn't really surprise me if "who do you like at 6 in this year's draft" was an interview question even.

Agreed. Virtanen also has to wear some of the blame for his development. Also in the end some picks just aren't as good as others. A better shot at it by drafting high does not mitigate that. Trying to extrapolate an 18 year olds progression isn't a science by any means.

He was picked where he was projected to go, it wasn't a reach by any means.

So if Virtanen proves a bust, Benning should not get any blame? Will Benning haters agree?

I have never blamed Jimbo for picking Jake.

I blame Jimbo for having Jake in the line up last season instead of in Utica.

Same goes with McCann.

Jimbo really screwed himself capwise.

Also if we look back there was a lot of backlash over not picking enough "Vancouver grown" players, especially after the success of Nuge and Johanson (at the time, even though we weren't ever in position to take them). Not that I really subscribe to that but it's just an example of management short sightedness to appease a short term desire instead of thinking long term.

Problem is, is he really a bust or a serious victim of poor development by management? I never thought he should have been in the NHL last year and this year definitely needs at least 1/2 a season of AHL experience. If he has a sense of entitlement, I'm sure a good dose of bus rides and AHL rinks and meals-on-wheels would squeeze it out of him...

You can tell that the maturity is just not there with Virtanen. The work ethic is absent. You contrast this to the maturity of a player like Horvat - that's one of the big issues here. It's also a reason why introducing a player like Evander Kane would do nothing but hurt this team.

Jake couldnt play in Utica last season.

How come he was able to play in the playoffs for Utica in 14-15?

When an 18-19 year olds junior season ends, they can sign amateur tryouts to their drafted teams ahl affiliate for the rest of that season. If under the age of 20 the next season it is either chl or nhl

I've said it before....too bad for Willie. Now I'm hardly a fan of his but he's seems like a nice guy & deserves better than to be stuck with this mess.

I agree he seems like a nice person but he's being very well paid for his work. I don't feel bad for him because he's apart of this mess. He's a bad NHL coach.

Considering he's nothing more than a shill for management I would suggest the coaches days are now numbered.

Yep - Willie is going to have sleepless nights until he is fired, wondering when it will happen.

Seems like a nice guy and all, but he's a good reason we are where we are too. He's nice and all, but he's just not good enough for this level of coaching...he'll likely be able to stick in the AHL/WHL again if he really wanted.

Deserves better?

He hasn't got the best out of what he got in my opinion (and I guess most agree). That's about it.

I do worry for the next coach though. What will management expect from him? No-one will turn this around quickly and unless the Sedins' sign up at 1m a year we will soon be even worse.

If you are a young coach why sign up here? Your team "%%"" for 2 years and then you are fired. Not brilliant for your future career. If you are "old" and/or experienced why bother with a team that won't be good for many many years?

I'm actually a fairly optimistic person. I even defended Desjardins after Calgary. I thought we might could have had a couple of more good years (like the Sharks), but now I honestly see nothing but years and years in the bottom 3-5.

Looks like Mirtle is on the Anti-Benning side. ;)

It's enticing to get tickets for dirt cheap prices. They are obviously desperate, but fans have to resist. Mirtle is right. The Owners react on discontent... use that people.

VAN fans have the rare luxury of affecting change in their market in this way.

The idea that the coach's tenure with the club should be decided by one or two of the most recent individual results is so... baffling to me. Like, "Oh, he won that one game so he must be OK after all!"

Are the Canucks going to suddenly get better following that one win? Is Willie personally going to change drastically? No. So do what you gotta do.

Oh so stuff is going to happen if the team manages to lose to the one team behind them in the standings? Not the 11 losses in 13 games thing? Not the repeated shut outs and thrashings? That's fine but the 29th place team losing to the 30th placed team is the final straw?

Yeesh.

Mirtle is correct. Fans need to be vocal and silently speak by keeping wallets in pockets. I'm not a fan of ownership but they need to step in here and clean house top to bottom.

Makes me wish the Tallon as a consultant rumours were true. Maybe they were. Not the biggest fan of Tallon but I think he's competent at least and that would be a massive step forward.

I agree it's time for fans to speak with their wallets. I also think most people realize firing the coach won't fix the mess. What it will do is place the blame solely on LinBenning which is why they're probably so reluctant to pull the trigger. They'll no longer have that excuse to sling to the public.

This is one of the few times it is totally cool for ownership to step in. This coach is a disaster and needs to be gone and if the GM is sticking out his neck for him he needs to be gone. There is a developing body of work to justify that anyway.
