The only promising future we had at C was Suzuki. Kotkaniemi has never been anything more than potential in a jar that might never translate.

This is a pretty amateur way of handling things by Bergevin and he indeed has a lot of explaining to do. But 6.1M for Kotkaniemi is beyond ridiculous. It's absolutely horrible. You take the picks, add a couple of assets and replace him. It's not that hard to do. People are really overrating his contribution to the team.

There's not even a spot for him at C in CAR...
Yeah, the only reason this offer has a chance is because 6M for this player is way too much.

Further, considering 6M is way too much for a 3rd OA pick coming out of his ELC tells me that, perhaps, it wasn’t the right pick in the first place.

At least the picks limit their loses.

Nowhere land
One that doesn't make much sense at all hockey wise. They are deep down the middle and just refused to overpay to keep Hamilton. To now overpay for KK makes no sense.
Yeah, Hamilton is not perfect but he's a proven hockey player. We know what he can bring, his force and his low points. On the other side, KK is so young and not fully developped. He have years of developpment before becoming the player he will be. And he will be what? 2nd center, 3rd center? But 6,1M$ now, that's insane. Why they didn't kept Hamilton?

Signing him though... Suzuki becomes much more expensive. It totally screws up the coming contracts. If you say 'no', then it sends the opposite message. There's actually a good argument for us in letting him go from that standpoint.
Yep. The long-term salary structure and culture is the key aspect for me.

Having said that, I need a lot of explaining from Bergevin how did it come to this.

I want him gone.

I really don't like anything about him. I didn't like him when he was drafted. I don't like his style of play or his cockiness. I don't like the stupid penalties he constantly takes. I don't like his skating. I don't like how our fanbase is still convinced he's going to be a superstar just because of his draft position. It reminds me of Drouin before he was traded to us.

Most of all I don't like how he went out his way to sign this contract and try to put our management in a stranglehold. This isn't a good sign for relationship for the team going forward. This isn't his value and he's collaborating with another franchise to take advantage of his own team.

This also really sucks considering Danault spoke out about his fear of Suzuki and KK getting more ice time than him before he signed elsewhere. I'd let 100 KK's go for Danault back. Especially at the same contract price.

It's all Leafs fault. If the would had eliminated the Habs, Bergevin, Timmins and Ducharme would be gone. KK would had not been sat for the last two games in the Playoffs, which clearly, pissed him off. Hand would had drafted earlier and not pick Mailloux. The new GM might had kept Danault and KK....

The move is one thing, I totally get that and that’s fair game.
The using of the exact same quote announcement, the posting it in French, the signing bonus, the Twitter account going ham…that’s the classless part.

lol. It’s hilarious.

KK second line duties were for him to lose. He would had played with pretty good players in MTL next season. Unless Carolina trade Trotchek, he will play 3rd line or on a wing.

I think the play here is…tank.
Let kk go for the picks and pray Canes crap off-season have them missing playoffs.
With Weber and Danault gone, we were already a bubble team (who fluked into 2 playoff runs).
Next 2 years drafts are supposed to be great.
Let’s load the picks, starting with kk and see what we can additionally get with Price, Drouin, Chiarot etc…
Look to be a strong team in 2-3 years.

It's a great move by Carolina.

1. It sends a message to the entire league that they are not to be f***ed with.

2. It's a one year deal for a young player with potential. It's an overpayment, sure. But it's only one year and you get to steal a player from a rival (one who tried to screw you over on your best player.) If he pans out, you might be able to keep him going forward - and negotiate a new deal later.

3. If it doesn't pan out... no big deal. You screwed over your rival and sent your message.

4. If it does pan out and the player underperforms, you move on without much cost.

I like this move by Carolina but it's not without risk/cost.
They could waste 6M on what could be a bottom 6 player for them and lose a 1st and a 3rd round pick.

Still an interesting move because, like you said, it practically puts us in a no-win situation.

Our best option is to take the picks and kinda hope KK has a terrible season ...which would also mean that MB failed when he drafted him. It's certainly not a good situation for our GM. The only way he can really win is if he lets KK go and somehow acquires a better C in the coming weeks using the new picks along with some other assets. Pretty hard thing to do.

Not the biggest Bergevin fan but it’s hard to shit on him for not signing KK beforehand if we have no idea what kind of offers he’s making. For all we know, KK sees himself as a $5m per year player and was rejecting everything sent his way.

Hey, don't say that. Remember that defensive zone deke schooling Byron on the first day of training camp. That was worth 5 millions in potential money.

... must have definitely sit well with the vets of the team... not

The funny part is that they think they're really clever offering Kotkaniemi 6.1M lol. They're so f***ed if we take the picks.

How????? They only lose a late first and a late third round pick. What are you going to do with Caroline first round pick? Draft another Ryan Poehling? Hope that the late first round pick make it into the nhl in 3 to 4 years???

That's the worse part, screwing his own club like that.

Just trade it away in a package for a more established C on the market like Christian Dvorak? Nope????????

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think we shouldn't match as well.

But man... that's so bad too. Personally I think we've misused this guy and he could crush it somewhere else. If we do pass on him, we have to hope he falls on his face.

Carolina came it at the perfect amount to make it absolutely f***ed for us either way.

It hurts for sure. KK was the wrong pick to make three years ago. It was a mistake to keep him at 18. He was mishandled quite a bit by Julien and Ducharme. He did not progress as expected. Very sad.

In your head they were his to lose. But the GM publicly said otherwise, in a foolish try to lower the cap hit.

Sorry, no loyalty from this guy to the GM who got us to the finals and is now overseeing a disaster. Out. He's not a dog, no loyalty.

Sorry but it’s a business. It’s not high school hockey. You don’t like the boss? Fine, that’s life.
Sorry it's a business, not high school hockey. You're the boss and demonstrate a negative pattern, in this case an inability to develop both a young player's talent and your relationship with that player. Not advocating keeping him at 6.1 but this lies squarely at the clown of a general manager's feet.
