It's not just a petty move (though that's absolutely part of it.)

They just sent a message to the entire league: f*** with us and we'll bury you. It is absolutely the right thing to do. I'd have done it if I were them.

Just a brilliant move on their part.

"We'll bury you"

This is Kotkaniemi we're talking about here. Hardly impossible to replace with a 1st and a few other assets.

It perfectly f***s us.

Either we sign and it screws us in negotiations with Suzuki and others going forward (not to mention what it does to our cap this year.)

Or, we lose a guy we were counting on in a key role going forward for next to nothing. We lose his trade value as well. For the first time in forever we had some young promising talent at center.

Now?

I would have 0 problem if it has Arizona or ottawa making the offer sheet. The real problem is that Carolina first round pick is going to be around 22-30.

Let pray Carolina team collapse hard next season and miss the playoff :laugh::laugh:

Personally, I think KK is an idiot for signing this deal. 1 year? Carolina doesn’t care about him. This action burns a bridge for no long term deal. It states clearly that he doesn’t want to be here.

Also, won’t Carolina be massively over the cap now?

Just $1.5m over. But still a precarious position to put themselves in considering they don’t need centres.

The only promising future we had at C was Suzuki. Kotkaniemi has never been anything more than potential in a jar that might never translate.

This is a pretty amateur way of handling things by Bergevin and he indeed has a lot of explaining to do. But 6.1M for Kotkaniemi is beyond ridiculous. It's absolutely horrible. You take the picks, add a couple of assets and replace him. It's not that hard to do. People are really overrating his contribution to the team.

There's not even a spot for him at C in CAR...

Even ignoring the dollars, he becomes a UFA in a year if Carolina gets him. It's great for him. Of course he's going to do it.

A solid young two way center who's 21 years old... and we let him go for nothing.

Pathetic.

Sadly though, it might actually be the best path forward. The Canes completely screwed us here.

The move is one thing, I totally get that and that’s fair game.
The using of the exact same quote announcement, the posting it in French, the signing bonus, the Twitter account going ham…that’s the classless part.

The funny part is that they think they're really clever offering Kotkaniemi 6.1M lol. They're so f***ed if we take the picks.
