It was likely already posted and I missed it but I was just reading a piece posted yesterday by Marco over at MHN and he said that the Habs will be meeting with Michkov over zoom to discuss things with him and they'll also go over some substantial tape before making a decision.

This is the first I've seen this reported anywhere so hopefully this is true and the Habs really do their homework here on Michkov before making any final decisions on taking him or not, if he's still on the board.

Just when I thought I was completely out on the Habs even possibly considering taking Michkov @ 5 I read stuff like this and I get pulled right back in again for a bit, until I read they won't again. It's like a endless roller coaster ride. :)

Yeah arguing themselves blue in the face when it's possibly a non-starter. It may not have dawned on them that our CEO and Ownership group (well within their rights) have nixed the idea of drafting MM with our 5th selection and he's not even on our board at this point. This is far more likely to be the scenario than HuGo worrying if he will be coming in three years. But hey let's all go ahead and threaten to leave or give up on our management group without a shred of real knowledge to back it up.
Most boards from San Jose to 10th overall are talking about the possibility Michkov falls to them or how to trade up to get him.

There is this belief that there is the top 4 and Michkov. And i understand.

But lets just keep an open mind.

A team picking in front of us having a personal preference for an outlier could change anything, example Reinbacher or Leonard or Benson could sneak into the top 4, for example. The draft never goes as expected, never.

Lets not put to much emphasis on the go big or go home and lets not be disappointed if our team don't draft our favorites. Players picked 6-10 always outproduce players picked top 5.

We might be surprised we who we end up with. We will see.
Absolutely no reason for Bedard Fant Carsson and Smitch/Michkov to not get picked up in the top4 no brainer

I think you can rest easy that they will do their due diligence. As will the other teams picking around Habs.

Even if they don't select him, it's not because they didn't bother doing their due diligence and homework on him.

That is rather troubling and yet pundits continue to rank him 2nd. Essentially, Leroux is claiming that Fantilli has low hockey IQ?

I wonder how much of that will be actionable intel given the propensity of NHL GMs to salivate over big, strapping centers.

Would you have Leroux’s link for that quote, handy by any chance?
He said it on On Jase and l’antichambre a couple of times. Marc-André Dumont said it too, he said he coached Fantilli a couple of years ago and watching him now he find his hockey IQ didn’t evolve since then.

Not sure if this has been posted yet:

“It is amazing to me how much it sounds like he (David Reinbacher) is going to Montreal at five. It’s not even Kent Hughes…it’s guys above him.” - NHL Scout, June 2023

Very interesting quote by an unnamed scout in HockeyProspect's Black Book, which I highly recommend purchasing.

Other than executive's 3 and 7 the rest of the executive's here really seem to like Michkov. Sounds like executive 3 just wants to scare others off so they pass on him so that his team can grab him. :)

I also like the way scout #4 thinks and he's 100% right.
The litmus test remains the same — can you corrupt one of those executives with a crate of lobsters? :sarcasm:

Guys above him? That's pretty much limited to Molson and Gorton and I kind of doubt Geoff is well versed in SNL hockey or particularly care.

I guess that would be referring to Gorton? Personally my read last year was that Slafkovsky was not Hughes guy and that his pick was likely Cooley, maybe Nemec. I think Slafkovsky is a Bobrov pick backed by Gorton but that’s just me speculating based on interviews from them and the behind the scenes draft videos.

That is your point of view.

It might not be shared by those making the selection.

We all taught New Jersey would make out like bandits when they had the opportunity to took Wright at 2 right?

Nah, I thought they made out like bandits by being able to take Nemec number two.

Columbus also made out like bandits getting Jiricek at 6.

Both guys who I'd take before Reinbacher.

Any chance Hughes is staying cold in the media on Michkov to help elevate the "risk" impression that other GM's picking before him might have regarding Michkov... only so he's still left at 5 to be snapped up by the Habs?

Also, I'm wondering how much HuGo values size. Fewer than half the players the Habs selected last year were over 6' and one of those is a goalie.

It seems size might not dissuade Hughes from looking hard at Michkov, or Benson, for that matter.
