Things are not automatically getting better just because we move forward in time.
I said nothing about getting better, it's about being different than what happened in the past. If one thinks the glory years of our Habs can be replicated in the future, they're in for a lifetime of hurt. The people, the culture, the environment will never be like it was 50 years ago.

If you don't change with the times, you'll get left behind.

I thought we finally had our dynasty in 2007-2008.

Plekanec, Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn, Higgins, Price, Komisarek, Halak, Latendresse, Grabovski, Perezhogin.

They would all become star players. They all looked so good until it all came crashing down in mid 2009.

McDonagh, Pacioretty, Subban, Weber, Fischer, Emelin were the next waive who would make sure we stayed competitive for years.

We were set, we finally had the horses to be a good team for years and years. Still to this day I don't know what went wrong.

That was the most optimistic I've been about this team. I'm hoping Jeff Gorton can bring back that sort of buzz around the team.
Ryder, PK… Farm was garnished. Those kids don’t have to become stars, home grown players are cheap assets and that works well with the cap.

They also theoretically practice, grow together and push each other. They also grow on fans which sells tickets, merch and creates fidelity.

I’m not a big fan of “theoretical future line ups” in hockey, I feel chemistry is too important and you need iterations.

Yeah just read that this morning; I doubt Nick and his teammates are as patient as some hf’ers

Agreed. I think the team should target either Reinbacher or Peliika at #8.. trade #5 to Washington for 8th & 40th.
That gives us: 8th (D), 29th (F), 37th (G Hrabel), 40th (BPA homerun swing).

I'd also consider trading CC + Anderson for Kakko & Lafreniere to the NYR.

And/or our 27th + Dvorak for PLD.

What a dream top 9: big, hulking, fast.

Suzuki - PLD - Kakko
Laff - Dach - Slaf
Heinemenn- Money - Ylonen
Speed - Speed - Speed

CC alone is worth way more than Kakko and Lafreniere.

That top-9 may be big, but it'll be shit. Just a bunch of big guys, skating around quick and doing nothing. Also, trading CC removes the one shooter we have in the top-6.

2008 was a mirage. I always knew it was.

But when we had Price, Subban and co? I thought for sure we were going to win a cup with that core. We weren’t far away…

Anyways, I’m hopeful for the future. We’re in full on rebuild mode and we’ve never really done that before. Hopefully we land some great players along the way. It’d be nice to go back to the top where we belong.

A core of Price/Subban/McDonagh/Pacioretty should have make us contender for the whole 2010 decade. Just miss that #1 C

I’m only drawing the comparison that they both fell for perceived issues. If Caufield was 6’+ he’d have gone in the top 10 of that draft.

Also, I seem to remember quite a bit of worry on the board that Caufield wouldn’t sign with Habs and wait to become a FA. It was never a slam dunk and Caufield also spent 2 years in NCAA where Habs didn’t have control over his development, one whole year less than Michkov will be in KHL.
I knew you might use this argument but it’s distinguishable.

Caufield was not expected to drop and when he did, it was surprising. Instead of that, Michkov is being projected to drop before the draft has even happened.

The board’s worry about Caufield was no different than that of Harris and Struble. This was a normal reaction to how the prior administration had not done a good job cultivating its relationships with NCAA draftees. It had nothing to do with Caufield specifically.

By the same token, the board was highly encouraged by how Hughes and Gorton interacted with the above 3 draftees and Hughes’ Connecticut connections and roots played a key role, to the point that it no longer was an issue.

The Athletic posted their new mock draft this afternoon, which was done by Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler.

1. Chicago - Bedard
2. Anaheim - Fantilli
3. Columbus - Smith
4. San Jose - Carlsson
5. Montreal - Leonard
6. Arizona - Reinbacher
7. Philadelphia - Dvorsky
8. Washington - Michkov
9. Detroit - Benson
10. Blues - Willander

29. Montreal - Cristall
37. Montreal - Hrabal
I love 29 and 37 but that 5 is a massive let down with Michkov on the board

Problem with that core is that it just doesn't have enough firepower upfront. Missing a true 1C certainly was a huge factor in this and would have helped tremendously but i think it would need another top forward on top of that , either another C or a winger. Then we would have been extremely dangerous.

Alas and unfortunately that windows has closed a while ago

No way the Michkov drops to Wash... Wash will have to trade up to get him
Depends what teams find out about Michkov and their tolerance for risk based on that intel. I’m assuming all teams will have gathered a similar level of indices — if he drops it’ll be cause the info they’re all getting makes it incompatible with a high pick. That erodes obviously, the further away the picks get. Fun times ahead.

We would have needed a GM who knew how to trade a Dman for a C.

Because the drafted dcore also had Streit and Emelin, and Markov was good until at least 2016-2017, and the backup goalie was Halak. Plus the Petry trade.

Markov Subban
McDonagh Petry
Emelin Streit

Price
Halak

Pretty sick back end

Do you mean Armstrong (Niinimaa for Ribeiro) or Sather (McDonagh for Gomez)?

Honest question to habs fan:

What do you prefer?

1) Having a very good team that can win against any team in the playoff but with no distinct superstar. Just a very balanced team from 1st line to the 4th line and with their defensive pair and very good goaltending

or

2) A team uberly talented offensively with one or two superstar forward but they struggle to make it to the playoff and are shutdown in the playoffs and never get past the 1st or 2nd round.

Because I always get the feeling a lot of Habs fan would rather have the 2nd scenario instead of the 1st scenario.

I would love to have another superstar forward myself, we never had such forward since Guy Lafleur but it's pretty apparent now with the salary cap and parity that having a well rounded team but more importantly HIGHLY competitive team is the way to go.

I think based on many discussion on this board, some people will overlook the competitive and well rounded aspect of a prospect to go for the flashiest or player with the more "apparent" offensive talent.
