Nope.

Tretiak is also truly awful at moving the puck. But this was a great game for his standards.

The weakest were the 98's which is expected
I thought for the most part they played well
Making 40 foot passes is going to catch up with them tonight
Jumping up in the play and quick puck movement seemed their strong suit

Nice, that bodes well. Presumably three of the WHL defencemen will make the WJC team, plus Sanheim. Maybe Guhle makes it as well.

I see five D from WHL
Guhle is going to make some noise for the fifth spot

I fully expect to see Sanheim, Fleury, Hicketts and Juulsen. Lots of competition for the other spots though. Quebec has a good group this year (Chabot, Carrier, Roy, Meloche) and Ontario isn't bad. Hickey looked good in the summer, though he obviously won't play in this series.

Strome's skating looks much better than last year. Really makes me feel better about having him as a top 6 player for this team and relying on him to score. Crouse also looks quicker than last year, I think he can be a force this World Juniors. He has experience, 1 year older, quick, big, great shot.

Welp, this should be an interesting week
Maybe next week will be more interesting.
Don't really like the game the Russians are playing. Fatigue?
Pond hockey tonight.
I like Strome, Crouse, Watson for sure.
Konecny and Senshyn ? Are good
Maybe Mckeown .
Not really impressed with any others, I find the talent really drops off down the line up

Blackwood is very good also

Very glad to hear Strome's skating is already looking better.

Completely forgot about this game. If someone is willing, please some impressions of the Russians.

Poor goaltending from Tretiak took them out of it in the first period, but zero is zero. This team has no offense, no spark, no fight, no nothing. The only one really battling is Dergachev. Except for Provorov, and I'm not even sure about him, no Russians from the WHL or OHL will make the U20 national team. Starting in the West may have had some effect on it, because it took 30 hours of travel just to get there. The purpose of this tournament is to winnow out those who can't play at the WJC level, and it has probably been effective from that viewpoint.

The team has looked tired from the beginning.....3 games in 4 nights after having just arrived from Moscow.

But the lack of offense should have been expected. Only Pilipenko, and to a lesser degree Vovchenko, Svetlakov and maybe Lauta, are bonafide offensive guys at this level....and none of them are 'elite'. I like Afonasievsky and Protapovich's big bodies and physical game despite their limited skill-set. Dergachyov is a beast. Igumnov, Khairullin, Yakovlev, etc. have been pedestrian.

Defensively, Kolganov has impressed. Dervuk has had his moments. Rykov still runs around too much.

I agree that (apart from d-man Sergeyev) the WHL and OHL Russians have been garbage. Although I still think Provorov, Sergeyev and Sharipzyanov should make the WJC.

What kind of team does Russia generally send to this series?

So how many guys on this Russian team will be on the WJC squad?

last year, from players on the final roster for WJrs, 2 goalies out of 3 participated in the SSS, 7 out of 8 defensemen, and 7 out of 12 forwards. Russia played with 33 players overall throughout the SSS.

Russian roster for 2014 Subway Superseries
Russian roster for World Juniors 2015

Of course this year it might be different, I don't know. Just posting the last year.

edit: I looked at one random mini-series last year, to compare the exact rosters: (not pretending it's saying anything, just showing the numbers)

OHL - Russia (0-4, 5-1)

From Russian team, the goaltender Shestyorkin played 93 minutes out of 120, then played the QF, SF, and a half of the final game at the WJuniors. Five out of nine defensemen that played the two games made the World Juniors. And six out of 14 forwards.

From the OHL team, none of the two starting goaltenders (Blackwood, Martin) made the final team. One defenceman out of eight did make the World Juniors (Nurse). Five forwards out of 21 that played the two games made the World Juniors. (Fabbri, Domi, Ritchie, Paul, Crouse).

In the SSS in 2014, only 5 of the 13 players who accompanied the team from Russia (Bryukvin, Dergachev, Fishchenko, Leshchenko, and Mamin) were selected for the WJC team. 2 of the 4 players from the WHL (Provorov, Valiev) were selected, 1 of 2 players from the OHL (Tolchinsky), and 1 of 4 players from the QMJHL (Barbashev) made the team. Some players, like Buchnevich, were already selected and did not to participate in the SSS. So the way I read the article that you are using to count players from the SSS who went on the WJC, excluding goaltenders, I count 9 of the 23 players listed on the Russian SSS roster who went on to play in the WJC. That appears to be different from what you are saying.

Edit: I didn't count the 5 of 8 defensemen who travelled from Russia who made the U20 team. So, in total, of the 31 Russian defensemen and forwards who appeared in the SSS, 14 played for the WJC team.

A good Strome is very important for Canada. I would also be very happy to have Watson play the same role that Ennis did in the 2009 tournament.

This kid has a much, much higher ceiling than many of the more notable (and higher drafted) defensemen taken in the last draft. With his combination of size and explosive speed, Team Canada would be crazy to not let this player loose on the big ice. He's built for international hockey.

As I have preached over the years, who ever we pick, let's not get caught slow on the big ice.

Strome may look faster, but that's damning him with the faintest of praise. On the larger ice surface, all the defects in Strome's skating will be magnified. He will be exploited defensively when playing against the super quick teams like the Americans. If you pick Strome, you pick him for the power play and hope he doesn't hurt you too much when he's playing 5 on 5.

Man, can't believe we are only 4 weeks away from December camp. That's when it starts to hit home....it's the most wonderful time of the year....

I guess I should start in on my Christmas shopping.

Well yes, that's the worst case scenario.
