Are people actually debating whether to bring Strome or not? Are you insane? We don't have the luxury to be picky. Strome is a game changer, and we need as many of those as we can possibly get. Strome is on the team no ifs ands or buts.
Definitely. Strome is a lock.

What a disappointing series from Pilipenko.

I only watched ~2 games total (parts of both W, the first O and today's) but Pilipenko seemed like the most dangerous offensive player for the Russians after Svechnikov. The plays he was making weren't high percentage, but they did showcase some skill and confidence.

For an undrafted player I feel he put on a good show.

I didn't see anyone on the Russian roster other than Dergachev who was really impressive, or who looks like they might contribute to having a good team for the WJC. However, beyond roster talent, there were other issues that contributed to a poorer than usual Russian performance.

First, Hockey Canada played a bit of a "dirty trick" by scheduling the games to start in the West, instead of in the East where it normally starts - a QMJL, OHL and WHL sequence. By scheduling the opening games in the West, it forced the Russians to travel an additional 3,000 miles to come from Moscow, and definitely contributed to the look of fatigue that Russia had throughout the series.

Second, there was the internal political issue of Maksim Tretiak in goal. The burden on Bragin to have to deal with issues of nepotism involving the grandson of a Russian icon and the current President of the Russian Hockey Federation definitely had a negative effect on the performance of the team. Tretiak played miserably in the 4 games that he played in, while Trushkov actually played pretty well in his first two appearances. Neither will make the U20 national team, but the fact that Bragin compelled to have to deal with internal political issues hurt the team effort.

All in all, the performance of this team does not speak well for the depth of talent available to Russia in the 2016 WJC.

It was also scheduled like that last year.

I had forgotten that it started in the West in 2014, and a better Russian team produced a better performance, but it is still a major disadvantage for a team coming from halfway around the World to travel 3,000 additional miles to their destination. This Russian team looked really fatigued at the outset, and didn't seem to recover any energy.

It's better to start in the West. Playing with this disadvantage is a good platform for players to show Bragin what they're made of. Separates the men from the boys. Because at the end of the day, wins and losses at the SSS don't matter. Individual player performance does.

In previous series Russian teams had superb (and better than Canadian) goaltending. In this one... yeah, you know the answer. But it's going to be different in WJC.

I'm not suggesting that wins and losses make any difference at all. I was just stating the obvious.

On a positive note, I'm glad its not called the Subway Super Series anymore. I'm not a big fan of Subway, find their sandwiches to be kinda saugy even without any sauce. On a negative note, I missed the last game of the Q vs Russia. Thought it was on tonight. But it was really on last night. :shakehead Other than that I caught all six games, even the one on Sportsnet 360 that I had to stream because nobody has Sportsnet 360 in their package. I had a hard time watching the series at times because the Russian team they sent was so bad but in the end it ended being decent.

The Draft Analyst: 2015 Super Series Recap

http://www.thedraftanalyst.com/recaps/2015-chl-super-series/

All things considered, we assessed the Russian team's performance as credible except in goal. Their roster was solid, with some familiarity issues since some guys played in Dmytrov together then went to Tampere for the Four Nations there.

The most impressive aspect of the Russian performance was their ability to bounce back and keep games close after the obviously tired effort in Game 1.

What hurt Russia most after the poor goaltending were the lack of a game-breaking top line and a two-way threat on defense.

The CHL had too many advantages in this one beyond talent (travel, rest, continuity). I don't feel the 5-1 outcome was indicative of the level of play. A bounce here, a bounce there and you would have had a closer series.

From a 2016 Draft point of view, I thought Julien Gauthier was the most dangerous of any of the CHL's first-year eligibles. And it's sad that the Russian double overagers like Svetlakov and Pilipenko will likely be passed over simply because they're KHL Russians
