Just let the kid play at his school and study. Maybe he values that more than playing in the Olympics as a 19-year-old? It's not a big deal IMO.
Precisely. What is better for a young kid? Playing competitive hockey at his school and staying loyal to the program that wanted you before you were all that, or most likely play the role of the 7th D to a bunch of guys who couldn't hack it in the NHL.

Reports are that there are no Junior players going and if true, I'm surprised that Makar was the one that got the invite. Would have expected Timmins or Mete to have been invited if they were going to invite any dmen from the junior team.

I’d be playing as the 7th D on Canada’s Olympic roster and wouldn’t think twice

Add it to the pile of question marks about this kid. Not sure he has the character to make it in the NHL, despite his skill. Is he another Daigle? How much does he love hockey or is it just a pay day for him?

Well good on you. I know I'd rather actually play hockey as a developing prospect with my buds at collage than to ride the pine. If he had said yes he would have much more to lose than to gain. Kudos to him for having the balls to say no, especially after how he was handled at the WJC.

Oh dear God. A kid who choose playing with a program that showed faith in him when he was still a little known prospect - playing there for no money -, a kid who could've played in the dub and actually earn some money, a kid who values education above travesties like we'll have in SK, is the one with charachter issues, and is only here for the money. Like do you even think before you post this crap?

Perhaps with how he was utilized in the WJC despite his on ice accomplishments he's not in any hurry to be involved with hockey Canada again?

For an athlete, representing your country is the ultimate honour.

I’m not judging him or looking down on him for declining, just saying I don’t understand. It’s his business and I’m sure he feels he made the right choice.

No it's not, that's completely subjective.

He's doing what's best for him, good on him. This won't make or break anything.

he should be forced to drink Tim Horton's coffee as punishment. Maybe Canadian legend Petr Nedved can still lace them up.

Some people play because they love the game. It's Canadian. It Runs in our Blood. I bleed and Sweat hockey. Not everyone does. Even the most skilled. Not just Maker. Lots of players are just a pay day. Just saying he might be another.

The smart ones think long term, then you have the guys who go for broke, have a 5 year career then end up bankrupt. Hilarious seeing some people judge a kid for making a decision because they're most likely jealous of his position.

LOL. A kid who's decided to develop playing college hockey while continuing his studies and being in class is in it for the pay day... okay.

This doesn't dictate whether he loves hockey or not -- he clearly feels the better choice for his future, both in hockey and educationally is staying where he is now rather than going to South Korea to be a 7th D.

Again...ALL NHLers are pay day. If the NHL came out tomorrow and said they will only provide players with living expenses and a small allowance for spending money....how many you think stick around because they "love the game?"

I'm confused
How the hell did you link turning down an offer to someones love towards the game

Yes, some people play because they love the game. Doesn't the fact that he can play triple the amount of minutes at UMass instead of being planted on the bench by Canada Hockey because..."transitioning period"...mean he just loves to play the game?

I also don't understand how Makar not wanting to play for Team Canada makes him just another player looking for a pay day. He plays in the NCAA - he doesn't get paid.

Olympics is junk this year and Makar already gave quite a bit of time to Team Canada this season. He needs to focus on his NCAA team.
