Yeah, I played around with the idea of McDavid Sid Mack line but didn't really like the ripple effects further down the lineup. Apart from some PP time together, I think Canada would be better served having our 3 best centers slot in as Centers.

No change in my roster for now. Stamkos is my only question. He's in for now depending, but that could change by Canadian Thanksgiving.

It's going to be a Canada v USA gold medal game...or a small chance of a Canada v Finland gold medal game.

lol at D.Toews making the roster. This guy was the 4/5D less than 12 months ago for the assistant coach who'll likely be running the defence. Doughty will also 100% make it regardless of his play.

Every best on best tournament there always seems to be someone on team Canada that ermerges. In 2016 it was brad Marchand, 2014 Olympics it was Jeff carter, in 2010 olympics it was J.Toews. I think the player to watch for is Barzal.
Injuries happen and a lot can happen between now and February. I can see Bergeron being injured and sub in barzal who if you recall had very good chemistry with Sid at the first 3v3 all star game. Add in the fact barzal has gone to the conference finals back to back and got some big game experience, I can see him shine on a line with Sid and Marchand if something happens to Bergeron.

I mean he played 37 seconds less per game than Pelech when he was with NYI and had better underlying numbers than Pelech and Pulock.

It’s not like he just became a good player. He took a step forward in a larger role in Colorado. Last year was only his 3rd season in the NHL. He’s gotten better as he’s gained more experience in the league. It’s easy to forget because he’s 27, but the guy has only played 169 NHL games. He appears to be coming into his own.

Even if Canada elects to play someone else with Makar, I suspect Toews will be in the mix. Guys who can quarterback a power play and lead a penalty kill will be valuable pieces if top players suffer injuries.

Toews has to come close to his performance from last season to make it though. I don’t think he’s built up enough good will with Canada staff to play mediocre at the start of the year and earn a spot.

I agree. D Towes is a legit Top 10-12 Canadian D-man at the moment and worthy of being included on any perspective Team Canada roster. It's a matter of opinion, it could be Towes, Chychrun, or even Pelech. Since Makar will arguably be the tournament's top d-man (him and Fox will battle for that honor) I just happen to prefer, and will take a little built in chemistry wherever I can find it. Always helps in a short tournament.

Just let McDavid, Nate and Makar run wild. and enjoy the show.

What kind of start to the season does Bo Horvat need to make the team?
Near a point a game and in the Selke discussion, he won’t have a skill role on this team and would need to displace O’Reilly/Couturier type players for a shutdown role…. Watching him 10 or so times last year he’s quite far away at the moment but if he can play like he did in the bubble he will certainly improve his chances

Super early projection with Oilers emphasis:

Hyman - McDavid - MacKinnon
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Huberdeau - Point - Stone
O’Reilly - Couturier - Marner
Stamkos/Barzal

Theodore - Pietrangelo
Nurse - Makar
Rielly - Hamilton
Chychurn/Doughty

Price
Binnington
Blackwood

The problem for Horvat is he's not offensively gifted enough to unseat about 8 or 9 players ahead of him, and he's not defensively gifted enough to unseat the likes of Couturier, O'Reilly, Bergeron, Toews, etc. as "defensive specialists".

In other words, if Canada is looking at filling an offensive role, there are way too many guys better than him to land that role. And if Canada is looking at filling out defensive roles, there are too many guys better than him in that role as well.

If Canada has a bit of a weakness/question mark (relatively speaking), it's LD. Unless one of the RD can successfully play LD, I'm not entirely sure who'd be the top pairing LD who gets the monster minutes. Theodore probably? Maybe Chabot if he has a strong start to the year in Ottawa?

Not like the last handful of Olympics where Canada had guys like Pronger, Niedermayer, and then Keith at LD.

Alex Pietrangelo can play LD, he did it at the World Cup on a pair w/ Burns I think.

Team Canada has proven in the past that they do not just take the best players. Chemistry and role are huge as well. Toews would only make it because he is a D partner for Makar, but that is a compelling reason to bring him.

Ultimately, I do not believe they will take Toews, but it's not crazy to think that.

Chemistry with Makar is defiantly a huge plus for Toews making the team, but let's not act he only makes the team because of this. If Toews starts the season anywhere close to how he played last season, he would be heavily considered for the team.
It's like saying the only reason Nurse could make the team is because he plays with McDavid.

Wonderful job.

Still one too many Canada threads floating around here. I realize this one was made for the 2018 games, but it’s now clearly being used to discuss Canada’s 2022 team.

I actually do think that chemistry with McDavid would be the main reason to bring Nurse over. Hyman might reach that too.

But that assumes that Nurse at least reaches the minimum value of #1D that he reached last season of course. But, beyond that, there is such a huge margin for error because it is impossible to compare players out of context, or to account for that context.

This is what team Canada learned after the failure of 1998, where the plan was to treat it like a video game and throw together the best players. They found success by putting priority on chemistry and role over objective quality.
