He has every right to turn them down and Team Canada has every right to never offer him a major invite again.

You mean he has every right to unselfishly turn down the unexpected chance at an Olympic medal, in order to fulfill the obligation he made to his college team at the beginning of the season to pay for his education?

While Team Canada has every right to make a petty selfish decision in the future and not pick him for future events? Sounds like the same kind of politically motivated decision that led to playing him as the 6th/7th defenseman most of the WJC, even though he became Canada's leading scorer in the 2nd to last game playing minuscule minutes.

Well good on you. I know I'd rather actually play hockey as a developing prospect with my buds at collage than to ride the pine. If he had said yes he would have much more to lose than to gain. Kudos to him for having the balls to say no, especially after how he was handled at the WJC.
Sure he would ride pine, but on the biggest stage in the world on the best team. It’s only for a tournament not like it’s a whole season.

Whatever, who cares. Probably wants to be earn being invited one day in the real tournament and not this one.

Opened this thread expecting "unpatriotic spoiled characterless kid" hot takes from a bunch of true hockey patriots sitting on their couches at home and am not disappointed...

I think it's selfish. However, I don't condemn him for it, I just disagree.

When you represent Canada at the Olympics you're representing everyone. Not just the crazy hockey fans who are so indignant about the NHL not being there or the ones who act like they don't care. You're representing the kids, who don't know a thing about it, watching the big screen with their parents, creating some of the most precious childhood memories of their lives. You're representing the casual fans, the ones who don't know any names but just love to party and celebrate players with the maple leaf on their chests going out and winning games. You're representing a system, a tradition, a federation. Your partnership with your fellow teammates represents the notion that as fans we all root year-round for our local club and come together just for a few weeks of a year to root for a bigger, more inclusive banner.

It's a great honor to be an Olympian. I know for a career-driven individual, it may not seem as significant right now. However, research has shown that past a certain level of monetary security, more money does not lead to more happiness. Young people, myself included, are always concerned about where we are going to go. Happy people with more experience often cherish more the memories made getting there.

Oh get off the soapbox.

I'm glad Makar declined the invitation because now people like you will come out crying and screaming about what a bad sport he is, when he JUST won a gold medal for his country.

He owes them nothing. Absolutely nothing.

He chose to decline, and that's his right. More power to him.
Im not cleaning anything pal. The country has served him so well providing not only freedom and democracy but the life of privilege of pro athlete... and there should be no option but to play. Not saying we should take away his citizenship.. well not yet anyways but there has to be some accountability here and seeing NONE...

He has already represented Canada at the World Juniors and brought home a gold medal, is that not enough? The kid missed a month of schooling and spent time on the world junior team as a PP specialist for the majority of the tournament, going to an Olympics full of washed up players does nothing for him but hinder his development, cut his playing time, and hinder his education. Stop.

Your comment made me lose brain cells.

I don't think more or less of him for the decision. but i sure as he'll don't understand it. i would do anything for an opportunity like that.

What does it make you think? Cant wait to see this.

The guy values his UMass team and values loyalty more then anyone else. Leaving UMass to play in the World Juniors was a long time away already, probably wants to get back into some normalcy in his life and playing with the team he committed to 2 years ago instead of going on another whirlwind trip where he might not even get to play much again.

This is significantly better for his development.

I think you've been trolled. :)

Well maybe not the best team considering no NHL players... we’ll have to wait and see on that

Even if they win gold, they aren't the world's best team considering every NHL team and half the KHL teams would probably beat them.

Are you f***ing kidding me?

You’re going to far with what I said. Canada is historically the best team in the world and he had a chance to play for them. That’s all I’m saying

Declines "Team Canada at the Olympics"

A human being doesn't care to be a corporate monkey for a crooked organization... more at 11'.

Healthy Olympians don't train on McTrash burgers.....

Or he has the right to prioritize other things over the national team (which is quite possibly the best choice for him) and Team Canada has the right to prioritize players who desperately want to play on the national team above all else ? He made his choice likely knowing that it could affect his future chances. I'm not demonizing him as you seem to think. But I don't think he endeared himself to Team Canada and I won't demonize them for that either.

We are all now dumber having read your post.
