Would have been a trivia question.

Name a player that has won a WJC gold and an Olympic Gold in the same year.

That’s quite a feat.

For an athlete, representing your country is the ultimate honour.

I’m not judging him or looking down on him for declining, just saying I don’t understand. It’s his business and I’m sure he feels he made the right choice.

According to who? You?

That olympic appearance will really help pay the bills if his long shot NHL career doesn't happen....

This is real life. There are other priorities besides what is ultimately a game for children. If Hockey Canada expects him to leave school for an extended period of time the long term impact on his life could be huge.

Damn, Makar was one of the only reasons I was looking forward to the olympics. There’s just not much to get excited about this time.

But I don’t blame him. I assume that the olympics are taking place right at the end of the college hockey season. If the choice is to play as a number 1 and fight for a playoff spot with your team or play as a number 7 and mostly ride the bench, he made the right call. I don’t believe for a second that team Canada would have actually deployed him correctly in the olympics.

1. He's just experienced Team Canada politics and probably wasn't happy with his unjustly limited minutes. Why do the same in South Korea?

2. He's already missed a lot of school for a tournament.

3. This is a discount Olympics.

4. He JUST represented Canada in hockey.

He has every right to turn them down and Team Canada has every right to never offer him a major invite again.

Add it to the pile of question marks about this kid. Not sure he has the character to make it in the NHL, despite his skill. Is he another Daigle? How much does he love hockey or is it just a pay day for him?

lmao, what? By all accounts he's a great guy.

I think he turned down for the following reasons:

1) He is not getting paid to go and would have to even pay travel expenses
2) He would have to shut down part of his season in juniors
3) He will not be able to use the video coverage in his personal marketing
4) Korea is a not a hockey market and games would not be on prime time

However, I suspect he may want to go to the Beijing games.

Bobby Mac did say that Team Canada only wants him for that #7 offensive specialist role with limited minutes he just had to live with during the WJC.

He already had to take one for the team in the WJC and basically ride the bench for most of the tournament no matter how well he performed because of Hockey Canada politics and Ducharme.

Playing 10 minutes a game against Spengler Cup level competition in a purely offensive role won't help him improve his game the way he (and the Avs) would want him to.

Makar is already amazing at the offensive ends. What he needs to focus on is the play in his own end. That is where he needs to improve. Team Canada is clearly not giving him that opportunity so going back to college is the right choice probably.

I wouldn't make it for myself because I rate the Olympics higher than others but I can't blame Cale for feeling differently. Especially if you consider the current political climate in South Korea...

what a spoiled, spineless player, forsure has character issue if he did decline the invite , some people would die to have the honour to represent their country at a world stage. #Makar? more like #Brat-kar

The political climate has improved during the past week. North Korea is even sending a delegation to the games with cheerleaders.

Big whoop. Puts the irrelevance of this edition of the Olympic tournament into perspective.

This is the opposite of being a spoiled brat. A spoiled brat is a person who doesn't get an invite and goes to the media to complain about it. If anything, he left a spot open for one of those other people who are dying to go.

"Want some water?"

"No thank you, but thanks for offering."

"Wow, spoiled brat. You know how many people would die for some water right now?!"

this is the most idiotic thing i've ever heard.

No issue with this. I don't care for the Olympic tournament this year and he probably wants to go back to college for the education and his teammates.

Would he have really gotten prime minutes? Something tells me they would favour experience anyways.
