In before the character assassination of Cale Makar

Was gonna say I think this is the part where we're supposed to trash his character or something. At least that's what I've been told every time Doughty declined the world championships or whatever that tourney going on during the playoffs is.

He's a young kid who needs to be playing. His best shot at playing is back with his team. Not riding the pine getting 5 minutes a game as a PP specialist. He said something along those lines before I believe as well.

Maybe he values getting an education because he knows nothing is for sure?
Maybe he values his teammates and doesn't want to leave them again as a key player?
Maybe he doesn't want to go to South Korea?
Maybe he just wants to enjoy being a kid for a little bit longer?
Maybe is just isn't the best for his development...

At the end of the day it is his decision [MOD]

For an athlete, representing your country is the ultimate honour.

I’m not judging him or looking down on him for declining, just saying I don’t understand. It’s his business and I’m sure he feels he made the right choice.

This makes sense for him for a variety of possible reasons--he doesn't want to miss too much of the school year/college hockey season, he doesn't think being the 7th defenceman on Team Canada would be worth the disruption to his schedule, he's tired/injured, etc.--but I hope it doesn't damage his standing with Hockey Canada in the long term. I've read elsewhere that they can be vindictive to players who've turned them down in the past.

What does it make you think? Cant wait to see this.

The guy values his UMass team and values loyalty more then anyone else. Leaving UMass to play in the World Juniors was a long time away already, probably wants to get back into some normalcy in his life and playing with the team he committed to 2 years ago instead of going on another whirlwind trip where he might not even get to play much again.

This is significantly better for his development.

just makes u think, is all. you thought a bit about it, I can see. me too.

If only he'd had a chance to represent Canada recently. Then he wouldn't look like such a little ass.

I’m not calling him an ass. I’m not calling him any names or making any negative comments about him. In fact, I’ve said I’m not judging him.

Some of you white knights on your high horses are ridiculous, jumping to conclusions and putting words in people’s mouths.

Its a lame version of the olympic tourney thats basically going to play out at Spengler cup level. Not sure why you would even want to be there.

Dumb comments to say its anything anti-Canada. He obviously had to ask the Avalanche and I bet they said no because they plan on him being on the 18-19 roster and any injury in a non-NHL tournament could destroy his development, but I guess you can say the same about being injured in the NCAA.

I dont know...

Im trying to come up with any reason why he would decline, but saying he hates Canada is obviously not the reason.

We're not judging him, but he's clearly out to lunch for declining.

So you know and decide what all athletes think of as the ultimate honor?

Well yeah, what's the Olympic village compared to Amherst?

There are a great number of reasons why he would choose to do this. I'm surprised, but not shocked.

Just let the kid play at his school and study. Maybe he values that more than playing in the Olympics as a 19-year-old? It's not a big deal IMO.
