I only caught a few shifts in the first period, but he definitely looks a step quicker. Last year he was very clearly not ready to play at the pace of the NHL. This year he doesn't stick out as much, which is a good thing.

6 goals, 2 assists for 8 points in 9 games in the AHL so far. Seems like he's on a good start for the season, which is exactly what you want to see from Wright considering how last season was so up and down and not always dominant from him. Glad to see he's still scoring goals at a good pace, as I think his playmaking is good enough at this stage to be a strength in the future at the NHL level, and if he can continue to build upon his goal scoring, which was so highly touted in his OHL rookie season he may become more of a dual threat he was hyped up to be pre-draft. While Cooley looks good for a rookie, and I'm not saying Wright will surpass him, he doesn't seem to have a great release which may limit him to more of a playmaker.

14th in rookie points
15th in rookie ppg

98th in ppg
112th in points.

And yes, he is not the only u20 year old in the AHL this season.
- also there are loads of 20 year old and 21 year old rookies.

Relatively speaking, sure good start but... compared to other rookies...
and considering his high draft position and everything

I think 6 goals in 9 games is definitely a good start. Yeah his assists are low right now but his playmaking was on display during the AHL finals last season so I expect those to start coming in as the season progresses.

Watching the games I can definitely see him being more assertive with the puck on his stick. We want to see progression in his game and so far we have to start this season.

1 point in his last 5 games.... 4 in his last 10. After a decent start to his AHL season, it seems to be going south for him. Anybody know what's up?

Haven’t seen much of his play lately, but he is only 6 points behind Coachella leading point getter.

When i was following, watching his play in his rookie season in the OHL, at 15
i was certain that he would be a star player to the NHL, he was just so frigging good!

Now... holy hannah! he is not very good at all.. atm. still very young though.

I saw his "decline" in his 2nd OHL season and i was worried back then
i'm more worried now.

In his last 7 games in the AHL, 1 point, -8,
in 5 of those games, combined of 7 sog,
2 other games, total of 11 sog.

In his last 9 games in the AHL, 2 points, -10
19 shots on goal,

17 points in 25 games so far this season
- 129th in AHL points

has 3 points less what a fellow team mate, undrafted 21 year old rookie
Logan Morrison

There's a 2 year difference between Morrison and Wright, but everyone knows that Morrison has been almost as or as impressive as Wright offensively dating back to the 2021-22 O season coming out of the pandemic, where Morrison helped put Hamilton on his back en route to the Memorial Cup, and somehow still didn't get drafted.

Wright just doesn't have an explosive trait. His shot is good but not that spectacular. Worried he'll just be a middle 6 C for the Kraken or elsewhere.

30/65 shots on goal has come from 6 games, that's 46%
35 shots on goal in 19 other games, that's just 1.8 per game.
You can't just filter out games where he logs a bunch of shots, that's not how averages work.

You can literally do this with any player. Ovechkin has 59 of his 124 shots in 9 games (47%) and only 67 shots in his other 25 games, for 2.7 shots per game.

Rookie player wouldn't worry about the slump, riding the bus in the A going around a country is different from doing the same in the O. The trips are a day long as opposed to a few hours in ontario in most cases.

Probably never going to be a star player. Doesn’t mean he won’t be a useful player. He’s not having a bad year, usually you can start judging players in their second pro season. If they aren’t showing good growth by then it’s time to be worried.

Typical case of a kid who out-matured his peers at 15/16 (a manchild), but didn't continue on that arc and then most caught-up and many passed him. So it used to come easy for him. Now it doesn't and he doesn't seem to have the drive IMO to rise above it.

As I said earlier in this and other posts, I watched him closely in his D and D1 years, and could not understand why he was the consensus #1 in most, if not all, draft lists. He was invisible for the most part in the CHL playoffs in his D year and in the AHL playoffs in his D1 year.

Its trajectory is very worrying. There's nothing elite about it. People praised his shooting skills to me, but I never took the train.

In a redraft, he is not top 6. A good thing for Kent Hughes. His choice will not be questioned.

January birthday. January 5 2004, nearly as old as you can be in the birthyear. So he was the oldest in his grade and hockey playing group. Granted, he was so good in minor hockey that he ended up playing with the 2003s. So the relative age effect combined with the pandemic and his decision to not play (he should have just gone to the USHL like Matt Savoie did) while the O wasn't allowed to play by the provincial government were definite factors in his early plateauing.

Same thing happened with Nolan Patrick and so many others in recent years. Would love to see the draft pushed back to 19 year olds instead so scouts and experts have another year of information. No one benefits from these early draft busts. Not the teams, the fans, or the players.
